### 4/5 — Make sure mute phone / silent mode is off

*2023-07-11*

GENKI is treated like a game and as such audio will be silent if it is off. Otherwise the app works fine.

Good like with nihongo

### 4/5 — Enjoyable and useful

*2021-09-02, version 3.0.4*

This app is a very useful accompaniment to the book and enjoyable to use. It would be good if there was a way to zoom in or if the Japanese at least could be made larger as I find the furigana too small to read.

### 3/5 — Ok App but need improving

*2021-01-22, version 3.0.4*

It a ok app. Once you learnt the words it make reading the textbook dialogue a lot easier.

However the App is not optimised for newer iPhones displays (iPhone 10 or newer) and iPads displays.

It would be great if there was a option to change the font size. As I’m using a iPhone Mini and it bit too small.

Also if you press the sound when flipping through the cards too quickly it will crash between sets.

FYI a lot people say there is no sound. But it not true. There is only no sound if the iPhone is on silent. I think the same thing happening with the 3rd Edition App too, although I don’t own the app so I’m not sure.

### 2/5 — Outdated & crashes

*2020-09-10*

You’re better off making your own flash cards.

Pros: Lists vocab in alphabetical english and in Japanese.

there are example sentences on the backside of the cards.

Good for studying on the go.

Most cards have pictures.

You can hear the vocab and example sentences.

Cons
For $5 we should at least be getting an SRS system.

The vocab “tests” are under “check my deck.” And it’s hardly a test. More so shuffled flash cards.

The system is outdated and always crashes. They’ve just upgraded this app for Genki 3rd edition and they missed an opportunity to catch up to other apps and services like Quizlet, Wanikani, and Bunpro.

This app isn’t ready to help you memorize the vocab. It’s just here to make money.

### 2/5 — New Update Broke App

*2020-09-07*

Used to work well but new update stopped English words from showing at all.

### 3/5 — Was working fine until the latest update

*2020-09-05, version 3.0.3*

There’s a bug in the check feature where the text is white so you can’t see it since it’s on a white background. Please fix, thank you!!

### 4/5 — Vocab isn’t complete

*2020-08-18*

I knew I could get better apps to learn vocabulary for free, but I wanted to get this because I could follow along with my textbook. To my disappointment the vocabulary isn’t a complete selection of everything in the chapter! Such a waste

### 3/5 — Ok

*2020-03-24*

But the thing is you thought I would BUY your book AND THEN, PAY for your MULTIPLE APPS??? Nah. No way. Idk why they wouldn’t all be in one app. This app could instantly beam the language into my skull and I still wouldn’t give five stars. Okay, maybe I would cuz that would be cool, but YALL STILL GOT ME MESSED UP.

### 2/5 — Sound not working

*2020-02-24, version 3.0.2*

Would rate this 4 if it not for the sound stopped working in os 13. Good visuals in this.

### 3/5 — No sound

*2020-02-13, version 3.0.2*

Great app but no sound.

### 4/5 — Pretty good

*2020-01-15*

The interface is a bit clunky but the vocab selection is quite (being from the books).

### 2/5 — No sound :(

*2020-01-14, version 3.0.2*

The sound doesn’t work but not bad otherwise. The English translation of the app’s options could also be improved.

### 4/5 — Good review for vocabulary quizzes

*2019-09-30*

The check and shuffle features make it very nice as a flash card type review. It needs a hiragana and katakana chart for quick reference. Also wish there was a way to hide the Kanji (until after I’m comfortable with the words’ spelling).

### 4/5 — Sound issue

*2019-09-09*

Great app to reenforced your Hiragana and Japanese vocabulary. To fix the sound just un-mute your sound with the side switch. Worked for me on iPhone 6s.

### 3/5 — Add dictionary form to the verbs

*2019-04-16*

It would be nice if the verbs were not in the te form so it would be easier to know the dictionary form, because in many cases you cant tell. But other than that the app is useful

### 2/5 — Functionality lacking

*2018-11-19, version 3.0.2*

While the flash card system is great - once you say you know a word it disappears- to review all words again you must reset. Would be great if there was a quiz or something as opposed to “turning off” the words gotten right. Reviewing is just as important as getting to know.

### 4/5 — No sound?

*2018-09-20, version 3.0.2*

Sound is not working for the pronunciation

### 2/5 — Not for beginners

*2018-09-16*

I was disappointed to find out that there is no way to study the terms written in romanji so I cannot use this set to study as a beginner. Only good for pronunciation but it is not effective enough to be worth $6.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — No Sound

*2021-05-14, version 3.0.4*

No sounds. Completely useless

### 1/5 — Ripoff

*2020-06-11, version 3.0.2*

Sound does not work. Save your money and do not buy.

### 1/5 — Horrifically overpriced

*2020-05-12, version 3.0.2*

I got this and another genki app and completely regret it. I just found the interface really stubborn to navigate. There used to be a really good flashcard app and i thought this would be like that. For what they give you this is hardly worth the cost, especially if you already have the textbooks. I thought this would just be an easier way to study the genki vocab but its not. Very much regret this purchase.

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2020-04-17, version 3.0.2*

The app has no sound.

### 1/5 — Sound in inoperable

*2020-03-13*

Unable to get support on a paying app
This is not acceptable
Would revise my review positively if problem is solved.
The app is a good flash card system. Sound is a must.

### 1/5 — No sound

*2020-01-19, version 3.0.2*

The volume doesn’t work, I can’t hear any of the words in the lessons. Not worth paying for.

### 1/5 — Audio doesn't work

*2019-03-19*

The whole reason I bought this app instead of using Anki decks was for the audio. Looking at the reviews, it seems that this has been an issue for over a year and that the developer probably just doesn't care enough to fix it. Save your money and use another SRS system.

### 1/5 — Horrible app

*2018-07-28, version 3.0.2*

Horrible app please refund

### 1/5 — No instructions, tabs don’t activate

*2017-12-20*

There are no instructions anywhere as to how this works. You tap around but nothing happens. Waste of money and I want a refund.

### 1/5 — Today's Update

*2017-08-09, version 2.2.1*

Love the app, but after today's update I can no longer hear the pronunciation of the vocabulary. Please fix.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Sound issues at first but

*2021-06-14*

You have to switch your phone off of silent mode while using the app. It works perfectly if you do that

### 5/5 — Great Flash cards

*2021-02-28*

Great flash cards if you are using the GENKI text book. I haven’t had any issue with the sound muting that wasn’t resolved by flipping the silent switch back and forth.

### 5/5 — Sound works when silent mode is off

*2021-02-08*

It’s a great app overall. However, I couldn’t hear any sound unless I turned off silent mode on iPhone.

### 5/5 — I’m writing a second review, they fixed the app

*2020-09-10, version 3.0.4*

great work! Works great! Thank you so much for listening and fixing it

### 5/5 — Very helpful!

*2018-12-14*

I use the GENKI books in school and I find this app to be so helpful. I’m surprised it’s not more reviewed. GENKI should advertise more that they have this app. It has every chapters vocab and their is also a kanji and conjugation app which are also great.

### 5/5 — Great review app

*2018-09-12*

This has been really helpful in my Japanese class!! Also you can shuffle the deck, they must have updated it

### 5/5 — Fantastic!

*2017-09-19*

This makes it to where I don't have to carry around a bunch of notecards, I can switch up if I'm reading in English or Japanese which is great to help make sure you recognize the words both ways, and you get to hear the pronunciations!

I have the vocab and the conjugation apps and I love them both!

### 5/5 — Great app

*2016-03-16, version 2.2.0*

This is a very useful Japanese learning app. I've tried a lot but this is by far the best. The example sentences also follow the grammar points pertains to the chapter. Do it's like you are double staying without even trying. It is worth the price Espevially since it includes all chapter for Genki 1 &2.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2016-01-29, version 2.2.0*

This is a good tool to use in addition to the textbook of course. The format is very similar to flash cards and I really like the option of either only doing vocabulary from one chapter or cumulatively. I would recommend getting this app and maybe the conjugations edition. The kanji one didn't do much for me so I would skip on that.

### 5/5 — Works well

*2016-01-05, version 2.2.0*

This works well as a companion to the textbook. It's worth the price.
