## What is GeoLog?

GeoLog is your location intelligence for finding, planning, and capturing the perfect shot.

Great photography isn't luck — it's knowing where to be, and when. GeoLog is the all-in-one scouting companion that remembers every location, tracks the light, and gives you the tools to turn a great location into a great photograph.

YOUR PERSONAL LOCATION LIBRARY

Every great location deserves to be remembered. GeoLog automatically captures GPS coordinates, altitude, heading, and timestamp the moment you scout a spot — so nothing gets lost between visits.

• Auto-logged GPS, altitude, and heading
• Organize by location, region, or import session
• Add notes, tags, and photos to any spot
• iCloud sync keeps your library across all your devices

SCOUT THE FULL STORY

Great shots evolve. GeoLog lets you document a location from every angle — the subject, the approach, the context — so you can study your options, share with fellow photographers, and return with a better plan. The viewfinder helps you previsualize compositions. The gallery tells the whole story.

• Live viewfinder with zoom focal length slider
• Capture supporting photos for context and composition study
• Photograph signs, trail markers, and surroundings to tell the full story

PLAN THE LIGHT

Know exactly when the scene will come alive. GeoLog's ephemeris engine gives you precise sun and moon data for any location — including extreme latitudes where other apps fall short.

• Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight tracking
• Sun and moon rise, set, and position arcs
• Circumpolar support for Arctic and Antarctic conditions
• Magnetic and true north compass
• 7-day weather forecast at the scouted location — not where you are now

YOUR COMPLETE PHOTOGRAPHER'S TOOLKIT

GeoLog brings together everything a serious photographer needs — from exposure calculators and film tools to integrated navigation. No app switching, no lost notes, no missed moments.

• Film reciprocity calculator for long exposures
• Exposure compensation calculator
• Depth of field calculator
• Exposure timer with Dynamic Island and lock screen support
• Photo slate for external camera session logging
• GeoReturn integration — navigate back to the exact spot when you're ready to shoot

Perfect for landscape, travel, architecture, portrait, film, and astrophotography.

### 5/5 — Location Scouting made simple

*2026-03-12*

Nice little app for when you need to scout locations prior to filming dates. The app captures GPS locations, dates, times, sun and moon rises and sets, and even identifies what phase the moon is in on a particular date. You can enter your own notes to the photos that will help you with planning that return trip (like perhaps “construction equipment will be gone in 2 weeks”) and finding the best time of day to capture based on the sun’s position. This app is even great for when you’re simply out enjoying nature as you can snap and import pictures along your route before deciding when to come back with the big gear for capturing chosen spots.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.2 — 2026-08-01

This update improves location accuracy and fixes a couple of display issues.

* Timezones now resolve correctly even without an internet connection, using on-device location data.

* Fixed an inconsistency between true north and magnetic north readings so compass headings recorded with your photos are now accurate and consistent, whether shot in GeoLog or imported from the Photos app.

* The Ephemeris compass now correctly aligns celestial positions with your heading, with clearer true and magnetic indicators shown together.

* Fixed an issue where crop marks did not update immediately after switching lenses.

### 3.1 — 2026-05-28

GeoLog 3.1

Live Light Meter

The Exposure calculator now includes a built-in incident light meter that activates automatically. Switch between Manual, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority — the meter drives your triangle in real time. Camera EV and Scene EV display side by side so you always know whether the number you're reading is a property of your camera or the light itself.

Milky Way & Solar Cycle

The Ephemeris compass now traces the galactic plane across your local sky — a purple arc marking the full galactic disk with a brighter core glow. Solar cycle phase labels (Golden Hour, Blue Hour, Nautical Twilight, and 17 more) update live as you scrub through the day.

GPS & Compass Accuracy

GeoLog captures sensor accuracy at the exact moment you shoot — data standard EXIF doesn't record. A live readout in the Camera shows quality before you commit. Accuracy travels with every photo across Ephemeris, Location Detail, and Photo Reference views, color-coded so you know which locations to trust for tonight's planning session. Automatic alerts in Camera and Ephemeris warn you when either sensor falls below threshold.

Location Addresses

Location Detail address now displays in three tiers — Points of Interest and named landmarks first, followed by the street address block, then county and country. Each tier appears only when data is available.

What's New & Release Notes

Release notes now appear automatically on first launch after an update. The full history is always available in Settings → Release Notes.

Improvements
* Solar cycle phase labels with tappable definitions
* ND filter redesigned as a 14-preset pick-list
* Fractional shutter speeds display as ¹⁄60, ¹⁄125, ¹⁄500
* EV and Scene EV side-by-side with info sheets for each
* Film reciprocity expanded with Cinestill BwXX and Harman Phoenix II 200
* Photo reference preview on long-press in Ephemeris
* Tiered address display in Location Detail
* Location search with colored category icons and direct-action history
* Delete mode UX with title and cancel button
* Light meter auto-off timer in Settings → Photography
* Offline geocoding fast-fail — no timeout delay in the field
* Help screen paragraph spacing consistency

### 3.0 — 2026-05-11

v3.0 is GeoLog's largest update — a smarter way to import, a guided introduction for new users, and significant upgrades throughout.

Guided onboarding

First launch now walks you through every tab and key feature with coach marks and spotlights. Each screen shows its own tips the first time you visit. Reset or turn off any screen's tips individually in Settings.

Intelligent photo import

Import scans your photo library for images taken near your current location or anchor point and groups them by place before you review. Assign to existing locations or create new ones — no more scrolling through hundreds of unorganized photos.

Camera upgrades

Pinch to zoom across all lenses with real-time focal length readout. Tap to focus with a visual indicator that resets to continuous autofocus after three seconds. Crop marks zoom with you.

NASA moon phases

The Ephemeris compass now shows photorealistic NASA moon phase images, rotated to match what you'd actually see from that location at that moment.

Bulk delete

Select and delete multiple locations in one action — photos and iCloud assets removed cleanly.

Search by coordinates

Paste GPS coordinates into Filter & Sort to find locations within any radius of a point, in decimal degrees, DMS, or ForeFlight format.

### 2.3 — 2026-03-22

v2.3 is a major update focused on making GeoLog faster to navigate, easier to learn, and more powerful at the locations that push other apps to their limits.

Filter & Sort

Finding the right location in a library of hundreds just got fast. Filter by country, then drill into region. Switch to Previous Import to work your latest batch without hunting. Search by name, date, notes, or even just a month name — and watch a live count update as you narrow down. Two search inputs, one smart pipeline.

Contextual help everywhere

Every major screen now has a built-in ⓘ button that explains exactly what you're looking at — without leaving the app. No manual, no guesswork.

Focal length slider

Zoom lens users can now dial in focal length directly in the camera viewfinder — drag to previsualize your composition in real time before you ever return to the location.

Rebuilt astronomy engine

The ephemeris has been completely rebuilt. It now handles extreme latitudes — including the Arctic Circle, where the sun or moon may never rise or set on a given day. New altitude arcs show exactly how high the sun and moon will be above the horizon, so you can judge the quality of light before you arrive.

Photo-linked ephemeris

Tap any gallery photo in the Ephemeris tab and the display updates to that photo's exact location and conditions. Tap the Photo button and it snaps to the precise moment the shutter was pressed — showing exactly where the sun and moon were when you took the shot. Learn from every photo you've ever taken.

Automatic reverse geocoding

Shoot anywhere—even deep off-grid. GeoLog is built for 100% offline field use, capturing precise coordinates and metadata without a signal. Once you return to civilization, the app quietly identifies the location names and addresses in the background. No manual tagging required.

Background iCloud sync

Full-size images now upload automatically whenever GeoLog detects a WiFi connection — even if you shot them days ago without connectivity. Your library stays complete without you lifting a finger.

### 2.2 — 2026-03-05

What's New in Version 2.2

Better Location Management

- Photo Import is smarter and faster — photos are now automatically grouped by location before you review them, making it easier to organize large batches.

- New ability to promote a gallery photo to its own location.

- Camera and Move Photos now include a distance override slider, letting you bring in nearby gallery photos — like park signs or trail maps — that fall just outside the standard gallery distance.

GeoReturn Support

- GeoLog now supports the just-released GeoReturn ap p. Tapping the GeoReturn pointer on a photo opens GeoReturn pointing to the exact spot the photo was taken and facing the direction the camera was pointing.

Ephemeris

- The Ephemeris view gets a visual upgrade: sun and moon icons now move along the compass arc based on their actual elevation in the sky, giving you an at-a-glance read of where they are at any point in the day.

Enhancements

- You can now swipe through your gallery photos directly on the main location detail screen.

Performance improvements and stability enhancements throughout.
