## What is GeoLog Photographer's Notebook?

GeoLog is your personal photographic logbook for remembering the places you discover, the photographs you make, and the conditions that make you want to return.

Great photography isn’t luck — it’s being in the right place at the right time. GeoLog helps you build your own collection of photographic places, record what you find, understand the light and sky, and return when the conditions are right.

YOUR PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC LIBRARY

Every great location deserves to be remembered. GeoLog automatically captures GPS coordinates, altitude, heading, and timestamp as you record a place, so the details aren’t lost between visits.

• Auto-logged GPS, altitude, and heading
• Organize by location, region, or import session
• Add notes, tags, and photos to any place
• iCloud sync keeps your library across all your devices

RECORD THE FULL STORY

A great photographic place is more than a single frame. Document the subject, the approach, the surroundings, and the compositions you want to remember. Your photographs and notes become a visual record you can study before returning.

• Live viewfinder with zoom focal length slider
• Capture supporting photos for context and composition study
• Photograph signs, trail markers, and surroundings
• Review and compare angles before you return

UNDERSTAND THE LIGHT AND SKY

A place is more than where it is — it's when it comes alive. GeoLog's ephemeris engine gives you sun, moon, and Milky Way conditions for every saved place, including extreme latitudes where other apps fall short.

- Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight tracking
- Sun and moon rise, set, and position arcs
- Solar and lunar eclipse forecasts
- Milky Way visibility, with alignment against your own saved photos
- Offline Bortle sky-brightness rating for any location
- 5-day weather forecast at the saved place — not where you are now

## Key features

- Auto-logged GPS, altitude, and heading
- Live viewfinder with zoom
- Sun and moon rise/set tracking
- 7-day weather forecast
- Exposure calculators
- GeoReturn navigation

### 5/5 — Location Scouting made simple

*2026-03-12*

Nice little app for when you need to scout locations prior to filming dates. The app captures GPS locations, dates, times, sun and moon rises and sets, and even identifies what phase the moon is in on a particular date. You can enter your own notes to the photos that will help you with planning that return trip (like perhaps “construction equipment will be gone in 2 weeks”) and finding the best time of day to capture based on the sun’s position. This app is even great for when you’re simply out enjoying nature as you can snap and import pictures along your route before deciding when to come back with the big gear for capturing chosen spots.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.5 — 2026-10-03

SEE YOUR PLACES FROM EVERY ANGLE

Links to third-party apps, which share each location's GPS coordinates and heading, now include:

• Google Maps Satellite — Open Google Maps straight into satellite view, centered on the location.

• Google Street View — Stand where you stood. Street View opens at the nearest street-level panorama, facing the direction your camera was pointing. If no panorama is close enough, Google shows a photo of the spot when one is available.

• Google Earth — Fly into a 3D view of the location, looking the same way as your photo.

IMPROVEMENTS

• Clearer Review Photos Buttons — After using the Camera or Import, the top-left button now reads Add with the number of photos to be saved, such as "Add 3." In the Camera, it reads Exit when nothing is selected, and the top-right button reads Camera, so it's clear it takes you back to keep shooting.

• Faster Return from the Camera — Going back to Home after using the Camera no longer pauses while your locations are sorted, so your list is ready the moment you get back.

GeoLog brings your photographic places, photographs, notes, light, weather, and celestial information together in one personal logbook.

Discover a place. Record it. Return when the conditions are right.

### 3.4 — 2026-09-24

NEW: FORECASTS

Plan the return, not just the shot. Forecasts replaces the Weather tab and works for any saved place — or right where you're standing, from Forecast in the side menu.

• Sun & Moon Calendar — See sunrise, sunset, twilight, moon phases, illumination, and eclipses throughout the year.

• Day Detail — Explore Golden Hour, Blue Hour, day length, moon rise/set, eclipse timing, 5-day weather, hourly weather, and the changing color of the sky.

• Eclipse Forecasts — See upcoming solar and lunar eclipses and determine their visibility from your location.

• Milky Way Visibility — Find the best upcoming nights to photograph the Milky Way. Each night is rated Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor based on sky darkness, the Moon's position and height, and how high the galactic core rises — with a note explaining what's holding a night back. A Moonlit Foreground badge identifies nights when the Moon can help illuminate the foreground without overwhelming the Milky Way. A location profile shows how well your latitude suits Milky Way photography, and a Milky Way Threshold setting lets you choose which nights appear. Tap any night to jump straight to Ephemeris.

For saved places with photos, GeoLog goes further. It checks the Milky Way's galactic core against the compass heading of your main photo and gallery photos. When the core passes within about 15° of a photo's direction, that night is identified as an alignment opportunity.

Nights are grouped into:
* Main Photo Aligned with Milky Way
* Gallery Photos Aligned with Milky Way
* Milky Way in Night Sky

So you can see whether a composition you've already recorded could capture the Milky Way — or whether it's time to create a new one.

• Bortle Sky Brightness — Offline global light-pollution data helps you understand the darkness of a location before you return.

IMPROVED PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKFLOW

• Apps Button — Every location now has an Apps button that opens to supported linked third-party apps, so you can research a place further in one tap.

GeoLog brings your photographic places, photographs, notes, light, weather, and celestial information together in one personal logbook.

Discover a place. Record it. Return when the conditions are right.

### 3.3 — 2026-08-14

This update improves Partial and Annular Solar Eclipse accuracy in Ephemeris, adds Barrel EV values for older cameras, and adds links to SunQuest for shadow planning.

Smarter Eclipse Detection
Solar eclipse detection is significantly more accurate, and now tells you whether an eclipse is Partial, Annular, or Total — not just that one is happening.

More Accurate Moon Phases
Fixed the moon phase countdown so it always counts to the nearest occurrence of a phase, instead of occasionally showing a confusing number of days.

Barrel EV in the Light Meter
The exposure light meter now shows a third reading — Barrel EV — the number a vintage EV-coupled lens or shutter (like a Hasselblad CF or Compur) would show for your current aperture and shutter speed. A quick way to cross-check GeoLog against a physical camera.

SunQuest Integration
GPS Options in Location Detail and Ephemeris now link directly to SunQuest's Building Shadows and Building & Terrain Shadows views — already centered on your location, heading, and time — so you can see how shadows will fall on your subject throughout the day and year. SunQuest is a separate app, available on the App Store.

Smarter links to TPE
Opening The Photographer's Ephemeris from GeoLog now includes — dates and time added to match the date being used in Ephemeris. You can also tell GeoLog how far away your subject is, from across the street to a distant mountain, and it'll drop TPE's secondary gray pin (geodetics) at exactly that spot and zoom the map to fit both pins perfectly.

Ephemeris Quick Links
A new button in Ephemeris jumps straight to SunQuest or The Photographer's Ephemeris using the exact date, time, and heading you're currently viewing, for even more location research. Both are separate apps, available on the App Store.

Thanks for using GeoLog!

### 3.2 — 2026-08-01

This update improves location accuracy and fixes a couple of display issues.

* Timezones now resolve correctly even without an internet connection, using on-device location data.

* Fixed an inconsistency between true north and magnetic north readings so compass headings recorded with your photos are now accurate and consistent, whether shot in GeoLog or imported from the Photos app.

* The Ephemeris compass now correctly aligns celestial positions with your heading, with clearer true and magnetic indicators shown together.

* Fixed an issue where crop marks did not update immediately after switching lenses.

### 3.1 — 2026-05-28

GeoLog 3.1

Live Light Meter

The Exposure calculator now includes a built-in incident light meter that activates automatically. Switch between Manual, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority — the meter drives your triangle in real time. Camera EV and Scene EV display side by side so you always know whether the number you're reading is a property of your camera or the light itself.

Milky Way & Solar Cycle

The Ephemeris compass now traces the galactic plane across your local sky — a purple arc marking the full galactic disk with a brighter core glow. Solar cycle phase labels (Golden Hour, Blue Hour, Nautical Twilight, and 17 more) update live as you scrub through the day.

GPS & Compass Accuracy

GeoLog captures sensor accuracy at the exact moment you shoot — data standard EXIF doesn't record. A live readout in the Camera shows quality before you commit. Accuracy travels with every photo across Ephemeris, Location Detail, and Photo Reference views, color-coded so you know which locations to trust for tonight's planning session. Automatic alerts in Camera and Ephemeris warn you when either sensor falls below threshold.

Location Addresses

Location Detail address now displays in three tiers — Points of Interest and named landmarks first, followed by the street address block, then county and country. Each tier appears only when data is available.

What's New & Release Notes

Release notes now appear automatically on first launch after an update. The full history is always available in Settings → Release Notes.

Improvements
* Solar cycle phase labels with tappable definitions
* ND filter redesigned as a 14-preset pick-list
* Fractional shutter speeds display as ¹⁄60, ¹⁄125, ¹⁄500
* EV and Scene EV side-by-side with info sheets for each
* Film reciprocity expanded with Cinestill BwXX and Harman Phoenix II 200
* Photo reference preview on long-press in Ephemeris
* Tiered address display in Location Detail
* Location search with colored category icons and direct-action history
* Delete mode UX with title and cancel button
* Light meter auto-off timer in Settings → Photography
* Offline geocoding fast-fail — no timeout delay in the field
* Help screen paragraph spacing consistency
