## What is GitJournal?

GitJournal is an open source note taking / journaling app built with privacy and data portability in mind. It stores all its notes in a standardised Markdown + YAML header format or plaintext. The notes are stored in a hosted Git Repo of your choice - GitHub / GitLab / Gitea / Gogs / Any Custom-provider.

Features -
- Offline First - All yours notes are available offline
- No Account Required
- Categorize your Notes with Folders
- Open source / Free Software / FOSS
- Can easily be extended and integrated with other Git tools
- Can also be used to manage Hugo / Jekyll / Gatsby websites
- No Ads

Never need to import / export your notes, as you always have control of the data. Apps may come and go, but your notes will always be with you.

Git has been chosen as a backend as self-hosting a Git server is much simpler than almost any other software, additionally there are already many commercial providers of Git. So you can choose who you want to trust with your notes. We currently don't support encrypting the notes, but it's something we're actively working on.

## Key features

- Offline note access
- Stores notes in Git repositories
- Supports GitHub, GitLab, and custom providers

### 1/5 — unusable

*2025-08-03*

it crashes 9/10 times and it will delete random selections of a file. i actually don’t think i’ve used a worse piece of software. terrible because they’re really is no alternative.

### 1/5 — Ерунда багованая

*2025-05-05*

Жалко денег

### 5/5 — Use it daily

*2024-05-20*

I use it everyday. For the most part, it’s simple and it works. Just like git.

### 3/5 — Dead :-| Unclear IAP

*2024-03-29*

This could be the perfect go-to app for all folks realizing a Git based PARA/Zettelkasten-like information organization.

Alas! The latest change in the roadmap dates Nov '22, there are various bugs (i.e. history not loading, arbitrary sync issues demanding full resets etc).

The IAP seems illogical to us: you either need to pay 12 months in advance OR pay the monthly fee until the full payment is done so you get the benefit. Not sure if this doesn't violates Apple's IAP policies.

We just use the app as a mobile read-only store of a Foam repo, but in general, the app has much bigger potential.

### 1/5 — Buggy

*2022-12-14*

I can write a note, then can’t escape from the editor and it doesn’t save anything. The ‘raw editor’ is just a blank page that does nothing. I resent having paid for this.

### 5/5 — Finally! Exactly what I have been looking for!

*2022-08-20*

I have been waiting for an app storing markdown notes in git for years. Thank you so much! Finally, I have found the last piece to my note taking workflow (vimwiki with markdown syntax + git) and now my notes are also available on my mobile.

### 2/5 — You pay for the app and it’s still not free

*2022-07-05*

First I have to pay $2.99 for the app, then I still have to pay for features. Worse, you are limited to only one git repository with the „free“ version that you had to pay for.

App isn’t impressive. If I change a file it’s unclear how to see the git diff or see the git log for a file or everything. Can’t make sure I only commit before reviewing the changes.

It’s also has some bugs like when flipping to iCloud as storage. It flips back and the files are no longer visible and git is no longer configured.

### 5/5 — App I’ve always dreamt of making

*2022-05-16*

Yeah thanks dude… thanks for stealing my dream! On the other hand, awesome app! I don’t think I could have implemented it any better myself! Thanks for fixing the RSA issue and sorry for the initial bad review. This dev cares about the users!!

**Developer response:** Hey. Could you please try again, I released a new version last week with a fix.

### 1/5 — Buggy

*2022-05-15*

Pros:
- Love the idea.
Cons:
- Have to pay in-app to unlock all features
- Buggy basic functionality (eg. Notes titles)

### 2/5 — GitHub client for $50

*2021-11-07*

6.20 CDN$ just to see the most basic app and $44 minimum for ‘Pro’ with 12 months of updates. They will ‘generously’ let you pay more.
