Goat Maps has all the features I need for route planning and trip tracking, without all the useless (to me) features, unstable operation, and steep price tag of Gaia. Looking forward to many trips with Goat Maps as the navigation app in my pocket. ### 5/5 — Simple and powerful *2024-11-05* Love it ### 5/5 — great app for backpacking *2024-11-04* I worked with Jesse and Anna building Gaia GPS years ago, and I’m stoked to see they have built a new navigation app without all the cruft and misadventures. I have done many hikes now with Goat Maps and it’s exactly what I need for a trip in the backcountry. I’m excited to see how it evolves even more, staying focused on hardcore trips outdoors. The features that make Goat Maps shine for me are the background map downloading so I don’t have to worry about keeping the app on after I choose maps, and the live route elevation graph. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Privacy issues. App uses your Apple email not sign-in email *2025-06-15* I downloaded the app, I did not subscribe. I tested the app and it crashed in 10mins of use. I contacted support via the app and it used my Apple Gmail address not the app sign email. This to me, is a violation of my privacy. I have uninstalled the app and requested that my details be scrubbed from the company’s records. ### 2/5 — Uses way too much storage *2025-08-17* The only purpose in having an app like this for me is to have offline maps for offroading. But the smallest map tile available is a massive area, and worse, that tile happens to cut off part of the trail so I need two tiles. Over 1GB of phone storage needed to see 8 miles of trail is pure insanity. I regret paying for this app. ### 2/5 — Clean map, no CarPlay *2024-12-12* As far as mapping, Goat is clean and works. However, they do not support CarPlay and have no current plans to. For my own use case of off-highway driving using head unit, it fails compared to competitors. As such, I cannot recommend it (I prefer other apps for trails). ### 3/5 — Good Start with Limited Options *2024-11-11* Goat Maps shows potential, but its limited features are a drawback. Although I am still searching for a viable alternative to GaiaGPS, I am doubtful Goat Maps will soon offer the functionality required for a full transition. Importing data into Goat is seamless as of this week, but it lacks full compatibility with Gaia's features; for example, it doesn’t carry over all pin colors or icon matches. Goat has stated it will not support as many icons as Gaia, nor will it include emojis—a disappointment, as many Gaia users value its advanced waymarking capabilities, not just its trail routing. Additionally, Goat’s icons are too small to be legible from a distance. On the positive side, Goat is precise in tracking mileage, operates quickly, and remains uncluttered. I’ll keep an eye on Goat’s progress, but for now, Gaia remains the necessary choice. ### 4/5 — Solid Hiking App *2025-06-02* Downloaded and used the app to follow a WalkGPS course around Bobakine outside of Perth. Goat Maps worked well managed to navigate the walk and have a great day out. Not sure why the only other review gave a one star review, the app worked as advertised and was stable. Pros: >Very easy to add and manage gpx files. Can’t talk to the any of the route planning features or tracking as I didn’t use them. > Topo and satellite imagery where good enough for my purposes > Course elevation was useful > Stripped back and minimal UI Cons: >Unable to rotate the map > Map data and additional layers very US focused > $50 AUD for a 12 month subscription seems pretty expensive. I just used the free trial to download the area I was interested in. Wish list: >Add notes, images and other information associated with a course. >Custom POI support (water, food, shelter ect) >Wish it wasn’t a subscription model for offline maps, would rather have a freemium model where you can download one or two regions for free and then any additional layers or regions you can pay a once off fee. ### 4/5 — Excellent *2025-05-23* Long time Gaia gps user. Good similar to the pre Outside Gaia but somewhat stripped down. I’m currently in the beta program and the quality is excellent. Will probably be a 5 star app when the cloud side is released. ### 4/5 — Great potential. Not quite there yet. *2024-11-17* This shows great promise as an alternative to other paid map apps and the problems with those, but still lacks some critical things that Gaia offers. There’s no full-featured web interface for route planning (come on, route planning on a tiny mobile device screen is excruciating) and it completely lacks map keys (If they’re in there I haven’t found them yet and they need to be better exposed) and detailed information on trails such as seasonal open dates, road surface type, etc. Hopefully these things are in the works. The good stuff … so far no crashy bugginess and seems very speedy. Happily purchased a subscription and I look forward to seeing more features. ### 5/5 — Best navigation app *2025-04-06* Since fatmap has disappeared, and Gaia was taken over by Outside and turned to trash, I’ve been struggling to find an iPhone app that has the features that are important to me: - user friendly, accurate maps with names that rotate as you rotate the screen. - the ability to effectively plot new routes using just the iPhone, featuring snap-to on roads and trails. - slope angle and aspect layers for avalanche planning. - access to the Sentinel satellite images for recent conditions. - 3D mapping: at the time I wrote this, GOAT doesn’t have this feature yet, but the team is working on it. I think this app is well worth the money and quickly becoming the most intuitive yet feature packed mapping app out there. ## Most praised reviews (7 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Gaia Killer? *2025-02-14* After using this app, I find it checks all the boxes that I require except for one, and that’s the web-based planning capability that the publishers have indicated is arriving in the near future. For a subscription cost that is half that of Gaia GPS, Goat Maps, in my opinion, provides greater value and is deserving of serious consideration by those who want a planning and navigation tool without the baggage of social media and other distracting or redundant contrivances. ### 5/5 — Great app, needs some updates *2024-11-13* I’m desperate to ditch Gaia after Outside’s concerted attempts to destroy it and turn it into hiking Strava or whatever brain-dead money making plan they have. At the same time, I wanted to be able to do all the things that are important to me when using a GPS app… Downloading different varieties of maps, live stat tracking while navigating off-line, a solid base map, etc. I’m happy to say that Goat Maps does all of these things. I was very happy to be involved in the beta testing and was able to use it for a successful trip through the Box Creek - Death Hollow wilderness in Utah. I’ve been using Goat Maps during the beta and it’s the best. It’s fast to start up, it doesn’t spam you with pop ups.
