First time the car couldn’t start. I wait forty minutes until support provides me another car, and I had to wait for the refund. Second time just after 200 meter the car stopped, of course it wasn’t parked. Neither me or support team could stop the time counter for 4 hours, so I were charged. Third time, same day, original plan was go to ikea and bring the items. So we booked other car there before take the bus. We bought heavy stuff. We tried to open the car we booked, same plate, it didn’t open. Support team told me our car was not this one. They told me the car was 15 miles away… it was the orinal car. We had to take a taxi because we couldn’t lift the items. It was expensive. Fourth time, was fine. Now after several months GoCar is charging me again 36 euros for the second car. What’s wrong with this app?! Please use other options. The car locks and unlocks from the app and it fails a lot, they did not give us a physical key and the vehicle left us stranded. The tow truck had to come and GoCar charged us for the entire reservation anyway. In addition, they stopped answering messages and calls, we were able to avoid spending the night on the street thanks to the police who helped us. I was asked to submit additional details such as proof of address & passport which I did and still nothing. Gocar was the only option available for me to rent a car as the other companies were extortionate. I’ve submitted multiple emails & requests for an update with ZERO response so any customer service just doesn’t exist. Incredibly frustrating. Also not happy that I sent over my license, residency card & passport with 0 feedback or review. No idea what you’ve done with these documents ### 1/5 — Hyphens are apparently not on GoCar’s designers keyboards *2022-03-22, version 2.0.47* I have an hyphen in my name and in my email address. Hyphens are not supported by the app so I simply can’t register even though I’m supposed to use this app to pick up a car next week. ### 1/5 — Technically not reliable *2021-12-18, version 2.0.44* I have unlocked the car with app but the car did not unlocked itself and the app showed the car unlocked, there was no way to order to unlock again the car in the app. I have to book another car and then I pay twice because of that. This system is not reliable and it is such a burden. I stood in Newmarket square trying again and again and waiting for someone to call me for 30 minutes before having to give up. Account closed for that reason. ### 1/5 — Terrible architecture, needs support 27/7 *2019-12-01, version 2.0.28* App UI has a terrible architecture. Can only check one location/ one car at a time. So if you select a location and a car for a time slot that is not available, you have to start your research all over again. Would be nice to put a filter at map level to see all the cars available for a determined time slot. Also on a Sunday afternoon, I am having an issue with a booking and the app asks me to call support. After I find the number hidden somewhere in the app, a registered call warns me that I’m calling Afterhours and I might be charged for that. WHAT? Should be much better as there is no alternative to it. ### 1/5 — Cannot sign up with everyone-mail address for that has special characters. *2019-08-07* Was looking forward to trying this app out in Ireland, but could not register due to an underscore on my e-mail account address. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Convenience in Name Only *2026-01-20, version 3.0.3* My experience with GoCar has been constantly and profoundly negative. For years, I have attempted to create and maintain an account, only to be thwarted by basic technical failures with the app. Account setup repeatedly fails due to broken verification systems - either my credentials are rejected or verification codes are never delivered, despite using a valid +44 number. It is difficult to understand how a company cannot reliably support its own core onboarding system. Customer support is effectively non-existent. Calls go unanswered, emails disappear into silence, and there is no meaningful administrative resource when problems arise - even after a rental contract is entered into. This absence of support is not merely inconvenient; it raises serious concern about accountability and compliance with basic customer and industrial obligations. The vehicles themselves reflect the same neglect. The cars provided were visible worn, damaged and poorly maintained - far below what one would expect from a professional rental service. Being offered such vehicles at a premium price feels less like a service and more like an afterthought. In summary, GoCar presents itself as a modern, convenient alternative to traditional car rental, yet fails on nearly every fundamental level: technical reliability, customer service, and vehicle quality. My advice is simple: Rent a car at the airport instead. It is often cheaper, demonstrably safer, and - crucially - provides access to actual human support where and when you need it. ### 1/5 — Can’t sign up *2025-10-27, version 3.0.1* I can’t sign up in the app ### 1/5 — Buggy app for new signups *2025-08-24* As new Signup, encountered numerous bugs from registration, verifications and validations. When you drive more than 50km for day they start to charge for each km. When you click the text box the keyboard does not appear! ### 1/5 — Avoid - Complete waste of time *2024-05-27, version 2.0.76* So slow and convoluted to set up, not to mention the numerous layers of approval and when I arrived to collect the car, it wasn’t in the spaces the app said it would be and I had to go back to the desk to do all the paperwork anyway. If you don’t know how works IDP take off this option. Taking the car was very easy, and it is flexible on the arriving time if you change it before the end. The app opened the car easily. Not having to pay for parking on the street in Galway City (a perk I only became aware of through an Irish friend who’s used GoCar) was a brilliant, unexpected benefit. There was a bit of confusion about the mileage feature that drew me in but GoCar honored it. While it is considerably less expensive than renting a car (insurance is where standard car rentals get you) it isn’t cheap. I’d use GoCar again. ### 4/5 — 90% there *2018-10-06, version 2.0.18* I’ve only used it a couple of times and it takes getting used to starting the car, etc however customer service have been amazing. 2 options that it needs for 5 stars: 1) Being able to see if the car is at the GoBase or not 2) Being able to drop a car off at any station ### 2/5 — Still so many issues *2025-09-30* Like everyone else, love the concept. Especially since Ireland is ranks at the top for countries making it as difficult as possible to rent a car. The app has gotten better at approving you license details quicker but we still have not been able to add credit card details on the app or the browser. GoCar, for the love, hire a CEO and a management team that can fix this company and get the app and processes working. It has all of the makings to be successful. But to have such a on-user friendly app, still after all this time is an embarrassment. In the year 2025 there is no excuse for rubbish apps anymore.
