I’d like to amend my previous rating based on the excellent help given and hope that the app continues to work and improve. Previous review - it’s stopped working and says something has gone wrong which has been reported to their engineers, this has been going on for over a week and the app is now totally useless, so my original review below now longer applies other than to say it hadn’t improved on my comments. I really like the app, the interactions are good. However it’s twice restarted the lessons at the beginning and I can’t see how to go back to the level I should be on which is frustrating. The app will show you the sentence, then pronounce it for you, then you get to record the pronunciation, then it will give you a score. Sometimes, it would give me less than 100% (for example, 85%, 98%), but I couldn’t figure out which part of the word i didn’t pronounce correctly. Maybe the developer can turn on the button to show us which part of the word pronunciation was scored low by the app. I liked the conversation part where you could interact with others in the virtual town, but the app just told me what sentences to say. Of course, it would be great if I could pick my own spontaneous sentences, then the app could adjust and have a true conversation. So it’s a good app for pronunciation. It’s not so great for spontaneous conversation. **Developer response:** Thanks for your review. We're really glad to hear golingo is helping you with your pronunciation. I've fed your comments back to the team.  We have developed AI conversations which allow for spontaneous conversations. These unlock as you complete lessons. This allows you to put in to practice what you've learnt in previous lessons. They're also available to access straight away in Explore mode. However, I would like the opportunity to repeat the previous lesson immediately after finishing the lesson. Thank you. ### 3/5 — An interesting app but lacking a few things to make it a good experience *2024-05-05* Overall the app is good, I enjoy the speaking focus. I think speaking is a great way to become more comfortable with the language and the fact that it uses your microphone to really gauge how you’re saying the words is super helpful. However, there are quite a few pain points I have that keep me from rating it higher even though I do enjoy the app. I have found that since my other language learning app mixes both North and South variants of Welsh, I’m not sure what course to pick, I wish I could get both. Additionally, the interface is very confusing; if you’re coming back to the app after a long hiatus there’s not really an easy way to start back at the beginning of the course. I really wish the app would let me tell it how to say my name. I keep getting marked down in my speaking when I’m pronouncing my own name correctly because the app decided it should be said in a way that is not how it is pronounced. Finally, I wish there were more lessons to get you familiar with the words before jumping straight to speaking, or at least keep the words on screen. The lesson will say something like “say ‘My name is…’” and I’ll be lost because the app doesn’t really teach you vocabulary, it shows you the words in two short sessions before and I end up having no idea what to say. The app has a lot of potential but for me it still needs polish in the above areas. If those were improved, I could see myself using it a lot more. **Developer response:** Hi there, thank you for taking the time to leave a detailed review. It really helps us a lot. Sorry there isn't an easy way to get back to the beginning of the course. You can repeat lessons by going into Explore mode in your Settings but we do realise this isn't perfect. We are planning to introduce a 'revise' mode and we'll post about it on social media when it's ready. I've fed back to the team that you're being scored down for the pronunciation of your own name. Hopefully we'll be able to fix this. As we're primarily a speaking app, we have presented groups of words together in 'chunks' which can be learnt as a unit. This works particularly well for certain languages in the app but we may need to break down the Welsh further. If there are particular phrases you are struggling with, please send them to us in an email to hello@golingo.co.uk and I can feed these back to the Welsh team. We're in the process of building out our Welsh content so if you have any other comments or feedback I'll make sure they're fed back to our Welsh course creators. We would also recommend that language learners immerse themselves in a variety of different content to learn a language. She needs to be slowed down at least 50%, otherwise it’s very off putting. **Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback. It's really useful. There appears to be no way to change that. I deleted my account uninstalled nothing helps I’m locked into very basic lessons. **Developer response:** Hi there, I just wanted to update you that in the latest version of the app (now available) you are able to adjust your level. Navigate to your Learning Hub and go to Settings where you'll be able to select between Easy, Intermediate and Challenging. Chris 😀 ### 2/5 — Not great for Welsh *2023-04-07, version 1.1.11* The app is a great idea in theory but doesn’t work well in practice yet. The Welsh course is just in the northern dialect - I’ve been learning the southern dialect which is very different and it wouldn’t recognise my (southern) correct answers. There are also a few bugs - one task asks you to say 30 (spelt out as tri deg). How cool! ### 5/5 — Great for shy learners *2024-01-14* I've always been too shy to join in with on-line Welsh learners discussions. As a result, my speaking skills have suffered. This app is a wonderful way to get used to hearing yourself speaking Welsh with absolutely no fear of embarrassment. It also has an AI component that generates conversations that encourage you to think "on your feet".
