It is a great resource for trying to shop more ethically! I find it's most helpful when used to look up a company I'm considering buying from, read their research/rating, and make an informed decision about whether or not to buy. Where I think the app falls short is as a resource to discover new companies. It is difficult to use the filters to bring up companies that can actually provide what you are looking for in price range, product, or origin. I assume that the creators are Australian because there is a disproportionate number of Australian brands- which is totally fine but there should be a way to filter for country of origin as that is a large factor in environmental impact of the clothing. I have also noticed that the price range is almost never correct (a company with a 150 dollar v-neck might be marked $ while another with 70 dollar pants is $$$). If you are looking for a shoe company for some reason you will only find baby clothes brands! Don't get me wrong: all in all, this is a great resource with lots of good information. Also, It'd be practical if you could see the price rating or average range in the "rating page" in the app where you also give ethical ratings and brand description. However, many brands aren’t featured and it doesn’t appear to be regularly updated. Recommended alternatives are rarely in the same category, price, or style - it feels very random and unhelpful. I also find the search/filter feature doesn’t work well. I love the app conceptually, but it could use some work to actually be effective in driving people to more ethical brands. ### 4/5 — Good app, could be better with more stores *2024-08-17, version 5.37.0* I love this app and use it almost daily. I wish the stores would automatically filter better by country. Sometimes I will click on a store only to find out it's in Russian. Categories are a bit confused. There is no actual swimwear in the swimwear section, just baby clothes. I also don't like how you are not able to click into stores that have a lower rating. You should be able to open any store that is displayed. If it's not sustainable, Why is it included in the app at all? My rating will go up once these elements are fixed. ### 4/5 — Really great idea 🤍 *2024-03-05, version 5.35.3* I want to start by saying that I really enjoy this app. I think it has lots of useful information, features lots of brands, and it is easy to navigate. However, I think that maybe a few tweaks could be made. When you first open the app, I really like the news/blog posts section. I think its very informative, but I think that maybe it could be in a separate tab. On the home page, I would like to see more suggested brands. Maybe once you have selected your ethical prefefences, the home page could show reccomended brands based on your choices, with images from these brands. These could also be based on your location, similar searches, or just app recommendations. I think that this could be a slightly easier 'starting point' than looking for brands if you don't know where to start. Similarly, I think that brand pages have lots of useful information about their ethics, which i really like, but you can't see a lot about the brand itself. I think that maybe there could be more images of their products, and maybe having them link to the product on the website. I also think that the search section looks a little empty. Even by leaving a 'previous searches' section could make this a little easier to navigate. With thousands of brands available, I think that a recent search history on this page would be very useful. Or maybe having the category suggestions underneath the search tab, so that everything is in one place. I can't find any place with a simple list of companies listed as five star, four star, etc. I opened an article on 27 clothing brands of TikTok and when they list the companies, there is a paragraph about each one, but you have to click into their article and read it to find the rating. It takes all the work out of researching brands, and for someone who doesn’t like shopping, it’s my ‘go to’ app where I do buy! ### 5/5 — A Must-Have *2023-06-26, version 5.27.0* I absolutely love this app. I have been using it to make a serious change in my clothing purchases for summer. I have been telling anyone I possibly can about it. It’s really impactful to see the companies’ stats on environmental and human rights violations, and I’m glad Good On You is digging to find that information. A few tips: -Sometimes all the “suggested brands” will default to one $, but they are actually not. If you type in that brand directly into the search bar, the dollar signs rectify themselves. In other words, If you’re trying to follow the trail of “brands similar to the one you’re currently looking at, but less heinous,” the dollar signs might be wrong. -I tried to find a suggestion feature where we can input a brand to be added to the app. I couldn’t find one, but I’d love stats on Joe’s Jeans! -if you’re a new buyer or on a budget, I suggest thrifting and ThredUp to make an impact while you’re looking for new staple brands. ### 5/5 — Great app, more work to do *2023-06-26, version 5.27.0* I’ve learned a lot from this app, and I’m very grateful it exists. Keep up the great job you do investigating and educating those of us who wish to become more aware.👍 ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — its a start, still mostly greenwashing *2023-04-09, version 5.27.0* The app has improved over years and has expanded its ratings/reviews to other companies and became less biased when reviewing companies (it was very suspicious for a fast fashion company like Adidas to get very positive ratings/review lol) Unfortunately like most ‘ethical’ apps, GoodOnYou contributes to the classic green washing. ‘Vegan Leather’ (which is another green washing term) is not any better for the environment than leather. It doesn’t matter how much mixture of ‘organic’ material glued with polyurethane (petroleum based product) it is still no better than leather. The app rates companies unfairly to those who source thier leathers or operates a leather factory with ethical working conditions/less environmental impacts. In my honest opinion, GoodOnYou should get rid of the ‘Animal’ rating. There should be a warning if a company uses leather or plastic imitation leather to be fair. Plastic leather (vegan leather is such a joke) takes 300-500 years to break down in a landfill, leather takes around 50. At the end of the day, just pick your poison. Take what this apps says with a grain of salt. ### 1/5 — Useless for men *2023-01-24, version 5.27.0* I love the idea, but it’s only useful if you’re looking for women’s clothing. Almost all features brands cater exclusively to women, especially the activewear and swimwear. Even if you set the app to filter by “menswear”, the “top pics” are women’s brands. It’s super frustrating. At that point I’m better of researching brands on my own. There’s also a complete lack of user based ratings. You cannot rate a brand to tell others about your experience with it, which would not be necessary if the app ratings were researched better in the first place. “Organic basics” for instance has filed for insolvency and has stopped shipping to its customers for months, no mentioning of that anywhere on the app, just look at their trustpilot score. Expected result: the ability to see all the info on the page. The ratings are sometimes surprising. Many brands are making ethical claims but failing to supply evidence. Others are quietly leading the way. The developers listen to feedback and continue to make improvements. If a brand is missing, you can request for it to be rated. If you want to let a brand know how you feel about their rating, you can use the app to do this. When browsing brands you can filter, e.g. by location, and it will remember your preferences. One suggestion: you can browse for Plus Size and Maternity fits, how about adding Petite? ### 5/5 — Great ethical fashion app *2024-11-10, version 5.39.0* Love this app, it’s my go to now for sustainable clothes and cosmetics.
