I notified GrandPad in January 2026 of his death and my intent to cancel the service. Despite this, the company continued billing for two months until the account was formally closed in March, citing a policy requiring the device to be returned before prorating. At the time, we were out of state, grieving, handling funeral arrangements, and caring for three young children, so it understandably took time to locate the device. Even though it was clear the device was no longer in use, GrandPad continued billing and refused to backdate the prorated refund to the date of notification. Saying “I’m sorry for your loss” while continuing to charge a deceased customer’s account is inconsistent, disingenuous, and adds unnecessary stress during an already devastating time. Even after they made an exception to allow the device to be returned, they still would not adjust the refund. As a physician specializing in palliative and hospice care, I work closely with families navigating end-of-life situations and find this policy, and its rigid application, deeply disturbing. Families are already under immense stress, and a profit-first, inflexible approach like this adds unnecessary trauma. The GrandPad device itself is functional, but the company’s handling of billing after a customer’s death is both unethical and exploitative, demonstrating a lack of humanity and empathy. I cannot recommend GrandPad and strongly caution families to carefully consider how the company treats customers during such vulnerable times. GrandPad urgently needs to rethink its approach to supporting families facing the loss of a loved one. ### 1/5 — No Video Calling for weeks *2023-11-30, version 6.491.25596* This app has been working very well for the last three years or so, and then suddenly, within the last two months, the video calling feature stopped working. My 82 yo mom has no ability to make video calls with her children. She’s been on the phone numerous times with customer service getting different stories about the SIM card (which she has to correct SIM card), resetting her device, etc… The video call feature seems to work for maybe an hour after talking with Consumer Cellular and then stops working. Audio calls always work fine. Sharing photos of family always works fine. It’s the video calling that stopped working and is very frustrating. The video window is white and camera does not display properly The outgoing video call rings but the receiver is unable to answer. The call never connects. When receiving a call, the text message invite link Opens the GrandPad app but says unable to connect call! This is only rectified by reinstalling the app! Again it works one time then back to the same loop! I have selected my notification preferences on the app for which I want and which I do not and your app routinely pushes “check out what you’ve been missing” and “_______ person posted” which are not notifications I have opted-in to. I don’t want to have to turn off ALL notifications because I want to be notified if my Grandma contacts me but I do not need notification when one of my 20+ cousins posts! My complaint is that the quality of pictures (especially videos) uploaded is very poor. Then we know how she is doing on a more frequent basis. Because of her new long term care situation and hearing and some cognition loss, we get to stay close to her when we could. it before. It was an amazing thing and it’s so well supported, the network of people you can ring at a touch of a button the fact that if my Grandad wasn’t to be very active they’d call his grandpad, he can post pictures and videos to us all day long of what he’s having for meals. Even though he’s older he has no carers and lives alone now and is completely independent but this allows all the family to talk to him daily and see what he’s up to. He’s made his own music sound track on his grandpad and enjoys searching all sorts on there, he admitted this past weekend he’d be lost without it.
