## What is Granul?

Granul models the actual optical and chemical characteristics of analog film: per-channel tone curves, luminance-dependent grain, highlight halation, and color crossover. Then applies them to your photos in real time.

This isn't another filter pack. Each of the 10 film stocks is built from the physical properties of real film: how silver halide crystals form grain at different exposure levels, how light scatters through the emulsion base to create halation, and how each color channel responds with its own distinct curve.

FILM STOCKS
• Kodak Portra 400: Warm, natural skin tones
• Kodak Gold 200: Saturated daylight warmth
• Kodak Ektar 100: Ultra-fine grain, vivid color
• Kodak Portra 800: Pushed warmth for low light
• Fuji Superia 400: Cool greens, punchy contrast
• Fuji Pro 400H: Soft pastels, low contrast
• Fuji Velvia 50: Hyper-saturated slide film
• Ilford HP5 Plus 400: Classic British B&W
• Kodak Tri-X 400: Gritty street photography grain
• Kodak T-Max 400: Sharp, modern black & white

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
• Real rendering pipeline: color curves, crossover, saturation, halation, grain, vignette
• Luminance-dependent grain. More grain in midtones, less in shadows and highlights, just like real film
• Highlight halation. The soft red/orange glow around bright areas caused by light bouncing off the film base
• Per-channel tone curves modeled from actual film response data
• Adjustable intensity slider so you can dial the effect from subtle to full
• Before/after swipe comparison

SHOOT OR IMPORT
• Live camera preview with your selected stock applied in real time
• Import any photo from your library
• Full-resolution export with EXIF metadata stamping
• Save directly to your camera roll

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.5.1 — 2026-08-31

Improvements to the filters for a more analog look.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-08-17

You can now send feedback from the app. Minor improvements.

### 1.4.0 — 2026-08-14

What’s New in 1.4

Capture sharper photos with more consistent framing. Film looks are now more lifelike thanks to refined color, grain, halation, and subtle lens character. We’ve also clarified Pro dither controls and improved overall reliability.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-08-10

Live dither preview
See the dither effect in real time before you take the photo. Switch between Film and Dither modes, then pick a preset from the strip. The selected preset is carried into the editor with your photo, so you can continue exactly where you left off.

Settings
The gear icon now opens a dedicated full settings screen for faster, clearer control. Choose grid overlay, front-camera mirror, auto-save, EXIF metadata, original photo handling, and haptics.

Fixes
- Brighter, more consistent orange accents across the app
- A larger, clearer export watermark for easier viewing and sharing
- Corrected purchase messaging: Granul is a one-time lifetime unlock, not a subscription

### 1.2.0 — 2026-07-29

Granul goes retro-digital. Alongside your film stocks, there's now a whole new way to treat a photo: classic dithering, the look of Game Boys, 1-bit Macs, and newsprint.

• 7 dither presets, starting free with 1-Bit and Newsprint
• Go deeper with Pro: Game Boy, Terminal, CGA, Macintosh, and Sepia Press
• Real editing tools: choose Bayer, Diffusion, or Atkinson algorithms, swap color palettes, and dial in pixel size and intensity
• Live preview thumbnails, before/after compare, and full-resolution export, just like film mode

Grain or pixels. Your call.
