## What is Grass?

A field of grass that breathes with you.

Breathe with it. Tap BREATHE and a pacer leads you through a slow breath — in, hold, out — and the whole field follows. The grass draws in toward you as you inhale and a gust rolls away from you as you exhale, so you pace your breath by watching a meadow instead of a shrinking circle. Three patterns: a long-exhale 4·6 for settling, box breathing, and 4·7·8 for sleep. Blow on the OUT to push the gust harder. The app keeps a quiet count of your sessions and breaths — no streaks, no reminders.

Blow on it. Grass listens to the microphone — but only for breath. It knows the low rush of air on the mic from a voice or a song, so talking, music, and a noisy room leave the field still; a breath rolls a gust up through it. Blow hard and it flattens; stop and it settles back. Nothing is recorded — the app measures the moment and throws the sound away.

Turn it. The wind comes from north. Real north — Grass reads your compass, so the field is oriented to the room you're standing in. Turn slowly and the blades swing to keep leaning away from magnetic north. Turn all the way round and the whole field lies down the other way.

Comb it. Blades bend away from your finger and stay bent, and the field remembers every path you've traced through it. Use several fingers at once; each one combs its own way.

Make it yours. Four scenes — a midsummer meadow, a dry straw field, a moonlit night, a first frost. A wind slider from dead calm to blustery. A breath sensitivity control. The pacer pattern. All behind a single quiet MENU.

It moves in layers, not sheets. Long blades are a longer lever with more sail area, so they catch far more of a gust than short ones. The tall stuff lies over while the low stuff only stirs — the same reason a real field ripples instead of tilting all at once.

Tens of thousands of blades, each one simulated individually, on the GPU. Between your breaths the natural wind is barely there — a field at rest, waiting for you.

No score. No streak. Nothing to finish, nothing to miss.

Grass makes no network connection of any kind, has no account, and collects nothing. Microphone and compass readings never leave your device.

### 5/5 — Update this Glorious App

*2018-02-01*

I’m really sad that this app doesn’t work anymore. It was my first ever app download when I got my first smartphone. It has sentimental value and I can’t bring myself to delete it. Whoever created this app needs to update it so that it works again!

### 5/5 — Somehow great

*2018-01-14*

My son, who has access to a variety of apps, always falls back on this one as a top three.
Sometimes simplicity is just what the doctor ordered.
Wish the developers would update this to work on the new software.

### 5/5 — In a world of white supremacist and evil I found grass

*2017-08-23*

Ok may I say that this is... LIFE CHANGING. I owe my life to this app. I wake up for this app. It brings you to a state of happiness that can only be described at nirvana. At the end of a bad I draw myself a bath and play grass for hours until I fall asleep. Please join me in enlightenment by getting this app.

I am proud to say that I have had this app for the past 4 years and it is still my favorite app. There are times that I find myself playing with grass through the night. My only complaint is that it is not optimized for the iPhone 6 Plus, please fix this 😓

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 2.0 — 2026-09-25

Rebuilt from nothing, fifteen years on.

• Breathe with it: a paced-breathing mode (BREATHE, bottom left) where the field draws in as you inhale and gusts as you exhale. Three patterns — 4·6, box, 4·7·8 — and a running count of sessions and breaths.
• Blow into the microphone to make wind. Grass listens only for breath — the low rush of air on the mic — so voices and music don't stir the field. Nothing is recorded.
• Four scenes: midsummer meadow, dry straw, moonlit night, first frost.
• Wind and breath-sensitivity sliders, and a first-launch guide to the three gestures — all behind a quiet MENU button.
• Wind driven by the compass — the gust comes from magnetic north, so turning your phone turns the field.
• Comb the grass with a finger. Blades bend away, stay bent, and the field keeps the memory. Multi-touch; each finger combs independently.
• Tens of thousands of blades, simulated on the GPU. Long blades catch more wind than short ones, so the field moves in layers rather than as one sheet.
• Completely offline. No network, no data, no account.

### 1.01 — 2011-02-17
