## What is Greann Gaeilge?

Learn Irish Gaeilge, now with a game to make learning fun! Did you know there's confetti involved?! And hints! Sometimes you just need a little help. This is no ordinary language app.

Greann Gaeilge is customized for Irish Gaeilge, the language you want to learn! We don't make apps for every language, just Gaeilge. And there are no ads.

And it supports many features of Apple's platforms, making it easier, faster, and more fun for you to learn! Sure, there's an iPhone app, but there's also an iPad app that's customized for your iPad (it's not just a giant iPhone app). The iPhone & iPad apps include Widgets, so Greann Gaeilge is always there on your Home Screen and Lock Screen. There's an Apple Watch app, so it's always with you wherever you go! The Apple Watch version includes complications, so it's always right there in front of you, making it quick & convenient to learn. And there's an Apple TV app that can be used to learn both at home and in a classroom setting!

In addition to the usual vocabulary, it includes grammar, and a detailed look at the alphabet.

Want your writing to stand out? Use the old-style conventions we show you.

Are you a serious student of the Irish Language, also known as Gaeilge? Then this is the app for you.

Greann Gaeilge makes it easy for you to learn the Irish alphabet, vocabulary, and grammar:

• The alphabet section shows you each letter in a modern and a seanchló font, and shows each letter with a fada, lenition, and eclipsis, where appropriate. We show you the dot-over-the-letter notation to represent lenition of consonants. It even includes examples of each letter in Ogham, an old alphabet used for inscribing stones; and Katie Holten's Irish Trees font, which represents each letter with a tree, bush, or vine (based on the Ogham name for each letter).

• The vocabulary section introduces a few categories of words, including weather, climate change, and time & dates, featuring numbers-based vocabulary for telling time with an analog clock.

• Greann Gaeilge teaches you how to conjugate Irish verbs and prepositional pronouns (do, duit, dom, etc.)), and it's expandable. There are currently two upgrades available, and these in-app purchases work on all your devices: iPhone, iPad, & Apple TV.

• The Dictionary tab has a simple dictionary that you can search in English or Gaeilge, finding words that start with, contain, or end with your search term/characters.

Please leave a review to tell us what you like about the app, whether you use it in a classroom setting, and what you want to see in the future.

### 3/5 — Cá bhfuil na cruthaitheoirí???

*2022-01-05*

Unattended aip apparently. Is trua sin, mar I’d have loved to hope for a possibility of the foclóir bein fixed. The starts with / ends with / contains would be iontach ar fad, but as it is, there does not seem to be a way to actually use ‘ends with’ or ‘contains’.

To any prospective app creators, is dócha, I’d reccommend making dictionaries which allow the search results to swith between containing, starting with, and ending with the search term. As far as I know, such a thing is not possible on teanglann… so far ar aon chaoi.

**Developer response:** Thank you for notifying us of this problem, Gwenhwyfach. We're happy to report that it was fixed in version 6.0. So now you can search to your heart's content, using 'starts with', 'contains', and 'ends with' to find patterns and related words. Try out the latest version now, which also has more vocabulary, a completely new Alphabet view including an Ogham font, and widgets for your Home Screen and Lock Screen.

### 3/5 — Good app

*2016-11-27, version 5.0*

Great app! However, I think it would be better if it included some tips for pronunciation, perhaps a spoken voice? From my experience the Gaelic language isn't pronounced the same as English so it'd be really helpful to know how to actually pronounce these words.
Thanks!

### 1/5 — A first in cheesiness

*2016-04-07*

On every other app I've ever bought, doing an in-app purchase removes the adds. Not this won.

**Developer response:** Hi, Léitheoir, and thanks for your feedback. We don't have any ads anywhere in the app. If you mean the list of upgrades at the bottom of the screen, we keep them there to show you that you've purchased them (they change color after you've purchased the item).

### 5/5 — Cool app

*2015-10-09*

I really like this app I'm glad it exist the more Gaelic content the better I especially like that it has a Apple Watch feature but I would like to see a complication feature added for the bottom complication on the watch face. Also I really expected that after I upgraded the advertisements would be removed however they were not I hope and future versions and upgrade will remove the advertisements because I don't like to see them. My other two request would be more content and audio content (like a guy pronouncing the words ) it's a good start tho so 5 stars.

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback and great rating, Akosimike. As of version 6.0, the app has 3 complications for Apple Watch. For your iPhone, it now has a Home Screen widget, and 3 Lock Screen widgets. Would you like the "advertisements" moved to a Store link so you won't see them?

### 2/5 — Okay but not great

*2015-10-04, version 4.0*

Rather limited language app. Also, upgrading to iPhone 5, I find I can't input a search on the dictionary; search window keeps slipping up beneath the heading.

### 1/5 — Waste of space

*2013-07-23*

Confusing, just takes up space on your tablet.

**Developer response:** Hi, Olaf078. We'd be glad to respond to any specific concerns you have. We're in the process of completely rewriting the app, so let us know what you're looking for!

### 5/5 — Great app

*2013-06-01*

Perfect for what I needed it for.

**Developer response:** Thank you, Eponess. We put a lot of time & effort into making it available on all your devices and home screens.

### 3/5 — Seems incomplete or unattended

*2013-04-01*

I downloaded the app for my parents. The navigation didn't seem obvious. There was a note about an update more than a year old, but no update. And I paid for the in-app purchases, but didn't receive them. I'm not angry. It's not a lot. I just want the app to be useful and functional. Please finish and send my verb tenses and preposition details, please.

**Developer response:** Thanks for leaving a comment, GalacticaLover. The in-app purchases show up when you tap on a verb or preposition, and a detail page of information shows up that gives more details and examples. Also, you'll see two extra verb conjugations show up.

### 5/5 — Very Helpful, Would Definitely Recommend!

*2011-12-07*

I am currently trying to teach myself Irish (Gaelic) and found this app very handy. I love it! :)

**Developer response:** Glad you like it, RawrNuggetz. We're giving it a complete overhaul to make it easier to add new features over the next few months. Watch for more new stuff soon!

### 4/5 — Very useful free app.

*2011-11-14*

It's great to have the cheat sheet and dictionary on my iPod touch.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the great review Adrinatexas! Look for more new features soon.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 7.0 — 2023-11-13

There's not one but *TWO* big new features in Greann Gaeilge 7.0: Games and Nouns!

1. You heard right: there's a game hiding under the new Greann! tab. It's called Letter Blender, and it features a row of mixed up letters from prepositional pronouns (like "agat" and "orm"). Your challenge is to rearrange the letters to spell the word correctly. Some are easy, like "orm", and some are much harder: do you know how to say "between us" using "idir"?

Do it right and you'll get confetti! And points. And those points get added to a leaderboard in Game Center. So now you can invite friends to play, too, and compare your scores against your friends' and the whole world. Getting a great score is easier because we offer hints on how to solve each word. But you'll want to use them wisely!

2. The second big addition is Nouns! Yes, you've practiced Verb Conjugation & Prepositional Pronouns before. And now you can add Noun Declensions to your arsenal. We break it down as simply as we can, so it's easy for you to learn.

• Bug fixes
   • Store tab now shows the item name in addition to the description

### 6.5 — 2023-10-15

1. The widget has been updated for iOS 17, and can be used for iPad Lock Screen and iPhone Stand By mode! It also jumps directly to the Learn tab when you tap it. And the Watch Complication now supports the accessoryCorner complication type.
2. The app is now written 100% in Swift and SwiftUI: this will allow us to add new features more quickly! And the iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS versions now have identical features.
3. In-app purchase options have now been moved to a new Store tab, which replaces the old Tips tab. The Store tab has a much cleaner view, and lets you restore purchases in case you have to reinstall the app.
4. The Dictionary tab now lets you select a word in the list of search results, and it shows the word in a seanchló font & a modern font, the translation, and the part of speech (including its subtype if it's a verb or noun).
5. In the Learn tab, the Alphabet, Verbs, & Prepositions sections now have a number of new subsections that describe concepts in more detail.
6. In the Learn tab, the app remembers which section you were last viewing, and automatically selects that when you reopen the app.

### 6.4 — 2023-08-27

Handy new feature: now there's a menu item so you can show the 'person' of the verb conjugations (for example, "First person singular", "Third person plural", etc.)!

Also, you can now choose between showing the verb conjugation Gaeilge text in the standard sans-serif font, a serif font, or the Ceanannas seanchló old-style font.

These features were enabled because we rewrote the Verbs section in SwiftUI.

### 6.3 — 2023-08-06

Handy new feature: now there's a menu item so you can show the 'person' of the prepositional pronouns (for example, "First person singular", "Third person plural", etc.)!

Also, you can now choose between showing the prepositional pronoun Gaeilge text in the standard sans-serif font, a serif font, or the Ceanannas seanchló old-style font.

These features were enabled because we rewrote the Prepositions section in SwiftUI.

### 6.2 — 2023-07-18

We've completely rewritten the Alphabet section of the app!

As phones have gotten bigger, we can show more information on each screen, so we took a step back & brought you a beautiful new Alphabet screen.

It now shows both the alphabet and details on the selected letter all on the same screen. And you can tap each letter and the details update automatically; you don't need to bring up and dismiss a detail window each time. Much more convenient!

The list of letters is now on the bottom of the screen, making them easier to reach.

As before, it includes modern and old ("seanchló) fonts, and using the dot-over-the-letter to represent lenition of consonants. And it now includes examples of each letter in Ogham, an old alphabet used for inscribing stones; and Katie Holten's Irish Trees font, which represents each letter with a tree, bush, or vine (based on the Ogham name for each letter).

Update now and see the beautiful new Alphabet screen!
