### 3/5 — Latest update

*2026-01-26, version 2.8.11*

I don’t care for the most recent update and the pdf doesn’t download. Bring back the full text version.

### 4/5 — Quiz

*2025-05-21, version 2.5.23*

Recently when you click on a quiz, after every answer. It says correct incorrect correct answer. This was never there before it must be a glitch. I noticed the same thing using the Gritty Spanish app on my IPAD.

### 2/5 — Needs a complete overhaul

*2025-04-22*

For the cost of this program, the app should be way more advanced in its design than it. The interface is as basic as it can be. You can’t see what episodes you have downloaded. You can’t see the quizzes you’ve taken. You have to leave the app to access the blog. There is no reason for this app not to have more functionality.

### 2/5 — Great product, poor app

*2024-11-21*

I would highly suggest to get this program, but stay away from the app. The app always has a server error and has been way for the past year. I close it out, delete it, redownload it and update it yet nothing works. For me I have to use a desktop to access the site material for convenience because it’s a pain to use via a mobile. Some other glitches on the app is that lessons may play and show no transcript and vice versa.

### 2/5 — just OK

*2022-12-31*

The app and contact for what you get is just OK. If you can get a deal for 100 bucks then it’s OK. It’s one of the few places where you Can Get Street Spanish. However I’m left to think that the author either is not formally educated in both English or Spanish or I’m not sure what the deal is. There are a ton of typos in English in the first lesson and there’s a lot of subjects presented without context. For example, in the first lesson, they introduced direct object and indirect object pronouns. A solidly, intermediate, upper intermediate topic… And it’s not really particularly presented that well. However, for the real world, Spanish, that you do get, that you’re not going to get another books, this makes it worth it, despite the many grammatical errors, subjects presented without contexts, etc. the Street Spanish that you would need to know if you Latin America is important. Overall, I think this is a great adjunct if you are intermediate or upper intermediate. This is definitely not a beginners resource.

### 3/5 — Hmmm…

*2022-08-11*

This app is not good for beginners. What they call “beginners “ is actually good for me… I have been studying Spanish for 2 years. I find it frustrating that the computer keeps making me prove i am not a computer ( typing in letters/numbers) between each lesson… I have to keep logging in and starting over 😡. I do enjoy the audio stories and quizzes.

### 2/5 — This app seems very expensive

*2021-08-22, version 2.5.8*

.It seems like we have to buy each level individually and each of them are around $30 or more. It is very expensive for an app☹️!! Is there a bundle that I can buy all of them with a great discount? Thank a lot!

### 3/5 — Please keep in mind I’m rating the app not content

*2020-05-29*

I don’t know what did they do but now episodes/lessons take even longer to download. I have updated my iOS so I doubt my phones the problem. Then when it finally downloads, the accompanying PDF doesn’t match the audio. Please fix this.

Otherwise, the content is wonderful. Highly recommend. I actually have all levels except the censored one. I love how the lessons are very entertaining and use everyday conversations. They’re actual conversations you will hear and use. I’m just rating the app. I have several other language learning apps and they have videos and PDFs etc. They don’t take forever to download and whatever topic I download always matches the content. So, this is so odd that this app does this. Por favor arreglarla.

Update: They got back to me and said they will fix it. And apparently not all have this problem. So, if you have tried their free content and it’s working on your device, don’t hesitate to purchase this.

**Developer response:** Download and install the latest version of the app, it will address the issue with your particular phone :).

### 3/5 — Glitch

*2020-04-12, version 2.3*

This app does a long to load however it’s easy to use✌️❤️

### 5/5 — Noteworthy

*2020-04-07*

I recently visited Guadalajara, mexico. It is the second largest city after Mexico City. This is a feat for a person who spoke zero Spanish in 2014. In Guadalajara hardly anyone speaks English. I attribute so much to gritty Spanish because it had taught me many useful phrases and slang for different everyday scenarios/encounters. From riding in a taxi, to being lost, etc. The gritty “Spanish basic finally” episode is an indispensable tool to travel to a Spanish only speaking city. You will learn key words to clue you in because when the locals speak quickly it is very difficult to understand. While the latest version conjures more of a serious tone and less jovial. The slang and humor of precious episodes can be easily incorporated. For example, when venturing out to the party/bar scheme you need “game” to interact, start and hold conversations. This is where gritty is indispensable. All 26 episodes is very useful and will provide enough practice one to travel to Spanish only cities. The senarios are very real and can be used in everyday life. They have increased my vernacular and helped me when in a conundrum for example lost at the airport and looking for hotel shuttle.

**Developer response:** Wow Señor Jerome! Thanks so much for being a fan of Gritty Spanish and thanks for taking the time to give it a lovely review! Everytime you listen/read, you'll pick up on something and you'll do so subconsciously simply because you are enjoying the material.
Thanks a again for taking the time to review!

### 3/5 — Great idea.

*2020-01-23, version 1.18*

Well, learning a language takes a lot of time and commitment to internalize and I appreciate this resource. I have tried many programs out there including:

Mitchell Thomas
Mimic Method
Babbel
Rosetta
And living in Mexico for a year

What I have realized is that no matter how “hard” you study, you can’t beat the practice of actually SPEAKING.

When I arrived in Mexico I was heart broken that I couldn’t understand a word, I have been “studying” for so long..

What I like about this resource is although the actors are just that, acting, they are speaking at a rather normal pace that one would find in the streets.

You really can’t beat having access to that!

There are pdf’s with an English and Spanish translations.

A lot of time and effort went into this.

The app itself is just “okay.” I am using an iPhone 6s on iOS 13 and an iPad Pro 11 on iOS 13 and they are both similar in results with frequent crashes but nothing that would persuade me not to use the app.

The audio quality is...not very good. It is similar to listening to Spotify on the lowest streaming option and when you have a good pair of headphones, its very distracting to have poor audio quality.

The app feels very dated and could use a facelift. I would like to see an option to have higher audio quality and a looping feature that allow me to imprint what I’m hearing.

Also, it would be helpful not to have so many accents AT FIRST, just stick with one such as Mexican which is what most people are used to in the USA.

Imagine learning English with all the different accents from the east coast, west coast, south, British and heck, even Hawaii where they speak a form of English called pigeon.

It’s a really cool concept and I praise the creator for his work.

Do note, this is NOT A BEGINNER COURSE. If you have ZERO training in phonetics this will most likely discourage you from learning because you will struggle HEARING the sounds the actors are making. In others words you won’t understand a word.

For perfecting hearing and speaking try the mimic method but this course won’t teach you what things mean only how to hear and speak Spanish. Which is how we start off in the first place with our native language, by ear.

Good luck!

*2020-01-19, version 1.18*

Gritty Spanish teaches with authentic sound , details, and variety within the context of culture. This helps me remember effortlessy.

### 5/5 — Amazing speed of my learning Spanish

*2020-01-18, version 1.18*

Currently I started learning Spanish for my travel and this app is very helpful for me like beginner

My favorite and very easy to use this app

Many thank you Gritty Spanish .👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2020-01-16, version 1.18*

Awesome content and great company. Amazing customer service!!!

### 2/5 — I learn slower

*2019-08-06*

For someone that has never spoken Spanish before they need the characters to be able to speak even slower and have a narrator break down line by line why the words in Spanish are arranged differently than the English side because from the first line when the pregnant women on the train is speaking you see her words broken down but she doesn’t sound completely like the breakdown it sounds all mushed together it’s still to fast. Your entire breakdown at the bottom should also be verbally so that we hear the pronunciation of everything just reading it doesn’t help like it would if I could hear you speaking

**Developer response:** Rollo, thanks for the feedback. If I were you, I would do the following....

1. Utilize the slower versions of the audios and
2. Use The two-second rewind button to listen to the words/phrases as many times as you would like.

Those two things as well as actually attempting to repeat what the characters are saying will help you get there and you'll no doubt appreciate it a lot more...

*** There is now also a "BASIC" version which is much more easier to understand than Gritty Spanish "Beginnings". Gritty Spanish Basics is more for new Beginners.

Please also use our web version of it as well at www.grittyspanish.com/webapp to practice using a computer.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Scam??

*2024-02-26, version 2.5.15*

After realizing how crazy expensive this program is, I tried to delete my account. However it won’t let me, it simply says “server error”. Whatever. Don’t waste your time.

### 1/5 — Requires Signup First

*2021-12-15, version 2.5.8*

You have to sign up before you can even see the first screen. Talk about high friction! Not doing it for now.

### 1/5 — Way too expensive for what your getting

*2021-05-04, version 2.5.8*

30-40 dollars per unit really? You do realize there are hundred of hours of great spanish learning on youtube for free. Not to say your lessons are bad in fact i would of bought them for say 5-10 dollars per unit. But you got so greedy with your high price so you got zero from me.

### 1/5 — Gritty Spanish

### 1/5 — I paid full version

*2019-02-17, version 1.16*

I recently paid full version and still haven’t received my full episodes!

### 1/5 — Doesn’t Work :(

*2018-10-28*

I’ve recently been learning Spanish and have been trying to find new ways to help learn the language. I came across this app and was excited to try it. My only issue is that after downloading it I’ve never been able to use it because the stories don’t load. I’ll click on one and it says it’s loading and after it loads the entire app closes. I re-installed it today and the problem still happens :( I’ve been reading the reviews and everyone seems to have positive things to say about this app, which is why I wanted to try. I’ll try to and see if this works on my IPad. But if this problem is ever resolved, then I’ll definitely give this another try.

**Developer response:** **Update**
These issues were addressed in new versions of the app.

### 1/5 — Waste of time

*2018-07-23, version 1.10*

From the time I downloaded it, the app doesn’t work. Skip this one!

### 1/5 — Useless

*2018-06-23, version 1.05*

I downloaded this but it just doesn’t work, just goes round and round in circles. I suggest Memrise or Duolingo at least they work!!!

### 1/5 — Gritty App

*2018-03-19, version 1.01*

It does not work. Every time I select a video, it loads then disappears before launching

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Real world Spanish!

*2026-05-07, version 2.8.12*

The Spanish you learn through text books and apps can tend to be very formal and the conversations/stories can sound very unnatural. If you want to learn Spanish, how it’s spoken in films/series or in real life by native speakers, I highly recommend this app. It has helped me sound less like a student and more like a local.

### 5/5 — Go to non AI native gold! The new update!

*2025-11-21*

The new update is great! This stuff has always been great and is still a breath of fresh air in the days of AI. The inly thing is i would like the pdf to still open how it used to. Now it just takes you to an option to print or download it. Maybe a feature to record voice and play it back would be a good addition for shadowing.
Glad to see the program thriving and growing still.

### 5/5 — El Mejor

*2023-12-24*

Gritty Spanish is a user-friendly and comprehensive App for learning the Spanish language. These short stories put you in real life situations where people from various spanish-speaking countries are using formal and informal words, phrases, and even profanity, to communicate. Real Life Spanish. Gritty Spanish is a terrific way to help train your ear to understand Spanish outside of your spanish class, or away from your slow-talking spanish tutor. I prefer to hear the language in normal speed, which is pretty fast, but Gritty Spanish gives you the option of listening at 30% slower. And now, with the Gritty Spanish App, which I have on my iPad Mini, and iPhone, I can give my ear a workout anytime I want. Plus, after you listen to (and read in Spanish and English) the stories, there are explanations of the words and phrases and grammar rules. As I said—Gritty Spanish is Comprehensive and User-friendly. Buena Suerte, mis Amigos.

### 5/5 — Helpful

*2023-01-24*

Enjoying this app! It does a great job of helping with listening. Conversations are interesting. I’m still in the “basics” or first set of lessons…there’s a lot here to learn. The only criticism I have, is that some of the speech is really slow in the basics lessons. I skipped ahead to the end result and wow…it speeds up!

### 5/5 — Excellent customer service.

*2022-09-13, version 2.5.9*

Love the app and the content. Had a technical question and their support got back to me within minutes!

### 5/5 — the Best

*2022-03-21, version 2.5.9*

Best learning app comes with a lot of info but easy to understand how it’s applied

### 5/5 — This is what’s missing from my learning

*2020-11-09*

The ability to listen to a naive speaker is essential.m to becoming fluent. Saying phrases is fine but if you don’t understand the response it’s pointless. This program bring the conversation at a natural speed that you will need to understand in the real world. You can slow the conversation down but I recommend listening to it at regular speed l.

### 5/5 — Great App

*2020-07-12, version 2.5.3*

The update is great, thanks! Are you all working on any additional language apps i.e. French, German etc.

### 5/5 — Excellent App

*2020-06-08*

This app is a must for anybody trying to learn Spanish. Like others have said, it is real life. Not only are there great listening and reading exercises, there are very thorough explanations of the text used in each exercises. I liked it so much that I bought it for my Italki Spanish teacher who lives in Mexico.

### 5/5 — Gritty Spanish

*2020-05-04, version 2.3*

So convenient! Thank you 🙂
