## What is Groat?

Groat is a private expense tracker with one job: record what you spent before you forget it. Type the amount, tap the category, done. No account, no bank login, and nothing leaves your phone.

TWO TAPS TO LOG AN EXPENSE

• The app opens on the keypad, not a dashboard
• Type the amount, tap the category, and the expense is saved
• Backdate to any day, or date ahead for a charge that is coming
• Add a note, or log income the same way
• Undo or edit straight from the confirmation

BUDGETS YOU CAN SEE WHILE YOU SPEND

• Set a monthly budget per category, or start from what you already spend
• Every category shows its budget as a thin line on the entry screen
• Type an amount and the line shows where it would land, turning red before you go over
• Committed finds the regular charges in your history and what they leave you each month

REPORTS AND HISTORY

• Day, month and year reports with a clear breakdown by category
• What changed: how this month compares with a normal one for you
• Your year: every day of the year as one map of when you spend
• History grouped by day, with search across every month by note, category or exact amount
• Repeat an entry weekly, monthly or yearly, and undo the whole run if you change your mind

ASK GROAT

Pull the screen down and ask about your money in your own words: what did I spend most on this month, am I inside my budgets, how does this compare with last month. Groat answers from your own entries and says when the answer is not in them.

This is the one part of Groat that goes online. Your question and a summary of your entries are sent to an AI provider only when you ask. The screen says so before the first question.

EXPORT AND IMPORT

• Export to CSV or Excel for any date range, with or without income
• The Excel file has real date and number cells, so sorting, filtering and pivot tables work the moment it opens, plus a category summary sheet
• Import a CSV and see the first rows exactly as they will be saved

STAYS OUT OF THE WAY

No account. No bank connection. No sync, no subscription, no ads, no analytics. Your expenses live in a database on your phone and go nowhere unless you export them yourself.

TOTALS THAT ARE ACTUALLY RIGHT

• Amounts are stored as whole cents, so a year of expenses adds up exactly
• Category percentages sum to 100, not 98
• Entries keep their own currency: a franc among euros stays a franc, and nothing is ever converted
• An expense is stamped with the calendar date you spent it, so it stays on that date when you travel

Light and dark, following your phone or pinned to either. Six starter categories, every one editable: name, icon and colour.

A groat is an English fourpenny coin, struck from 1279 and demonetised in 1856.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.6 — 2026-09-24

A new look, and the same two taps.

Groat has been redrawn as a pocket ledger: warm paper by day, ink at night, a serif for what matters and figures that line up in columns. The groat's cross is the pattern throughout — four favourite categories on Record, four doors on Ledger, the four quarters of your year.

Record is the amount, a ruled keypad and your favourites. Type, tap a category, and a receipt says exactly what was recorded, with Edit and Undo right beside it. Swipe for more categories, or open them all.

Ledger has today, the month and the year at a glance, with Reports, Insights, Budgets and Committed a tap away. Search and Ask Groat share one place at the top of every page.

Repeats are schedules now: rent or a subscription is recorded when it falls due, the next time you open Groat — never ahead of time. Pause it, resume it, stop it. Entries themselves are dated today or earlier.

Ask Groat shows exactly what would be sent before every question, and leaves your notes out unless you include them.

Imports keep each row in its own currency, and ask which way round the dates are instead of guessing.

And a new icon.

### 1.5 — 2026-09-24

This one speaks six more languages, and finally asks how it's doing.

Groat now speaks French, Portuguese (Brazil), German, Dutch, Simplified Chinese and Japanese, alongside English and the two Spanishes — pick one in Settings, or let the device decide. Dates and numbers follow each language's own conventions, and Ask Groat answers in whichever one you're using.

Settings gets a Feedback section: write in with a bug or an idea, or leave a rating on the App Store. Groat asks for a rating itself only once, after your fifth saved entry, rather than from a button that nags.

The Singapore dollar joins the currency list.

### 1.4 — 2026-09-20

This one answers questions.

Ask Groat. Pull the screen down and ask, in your own words: what did I spend
most on this month, am I inside my budgets, how does this month compare with
last. Groat answers from your own entries — the last twelve months of totals,
your budgets and your latest entries — and tells you when the answer is not in
them. Follow up as you would with a person: "and the month before?" works.

It is there from anywhere. Pull down on the entry screen, or from the title bar
on any other screen; it is also listed under Insights and in Settings. Currencies
stay apart in the answers as they do everywhere else in Groat.

It is the one part of Groat that goes online. When you ask, your question and
that summary are sent to an AI provider; nothing is sent otherwise, and nothing
else leaves the device. The screen says so before the first question.

The gestures help now lists the pull.

### 1.3 — 2026-09-19

This one is about trusting what you see and fixing what you got wrong.

Entries keep their own currency. Log a franc among euros and it stays a franc: every total, report, budget and export keeps the currencies apart, and nothing is ever converted. The setting is now the default for new entries, nothing more.

After a save, the confirmation stays long enough to act on and offers Edit and Undo. A backdated entry stays listed under "Last saved", so a wrong category is one tap away rather than a trip through History.

Search, from History: a word from a note, a category, or an exact amount, across every month at once. The report's month title opens a picker too.

Budgets no longer need history. Add a category budget, pick the category, type the amount. Where there is history the suggestions are still there, but they show you every change before replacing your own figures, and you can undo it.

Editing asks before discarding unsaved changes, the first digit you type replaces the old amount, and deleting from the editor can be undone like everywhere else.

"Make recurrent" is now "Repeat entry" and says exactly what it will create — the amount, the category, the dates and the total — and the whole run can be undone. Reports say how much of a total is dated ahead rather than already spent.

Export opens on the report you were looking at, can include income, takes any two dates, and "All entries" really is all of them.

Imports show the first rows as they will be saved, let you see and share every row that could not be read, and offer to show what was just imported.

And first launch is a single line over the real keypad instead of six screens.

### 1.2 — 2026-09-02

Four things this time, all asked for by people using it.

A short introduction on first launch, and a walkthrough that points at the real screen rather than a picture of one. Both skippable, both shown once.

New categories can be made from the entry screen. There is a "New" button at the end of the category row, and a "New category" row inside the full list — no need to go into Settings for it any more.

Any entry can be duplicated to another date. Useful when the same charge lands on a different day.

And any entry can be made recurrent — weekly, monthly or yearly, until a date you pick. "Monthly until the end of the year" writes the four entries and tells you how many it is going to write first. Each one is an ordinary entry afterwards, so you can change or remove them one at a time.

Entries can also be dated into the future now, which is what makes the last two work: a subscription due next month shows up under its own date and counts toward that category's budget, without pretending you have already spent it.
