### 3/5 — My troop issues

*2026-05-15, version 3.8*

They don’t know what it is but they are trying to get me to just keep talking about it giving me so much pain and panic that they don’t even want- have to look at me.

### 3/5 — Ugly UI, unusable in dark mode

*2023-02-16, version 3.1.2*

The app can do what it was designed to do, but the UI looks like it was designed 15 years ago and if your device is in dark mode it is unusable. This is the only app I use on my phone or iPad that is broken by dark mode.

### 2/5 — The App has ruined my Fretlight experience

*2022-07-01, version 3.1.2*

It’s amazing this app has been around as long as it has and still has the glaring issues it does. If it weren’t for these issues the app would be pretty good, but the issues are major. Enough that I wish I would have bought the Fretlight guitar with built in chords and scales and not the Bluetooth one that has to connect to my phone. There are two major issues, the first is that the app isn’t compatible with dark mode on my iPhone. If dark mode is on I can’t access the setting menu or any of the drop down menus for selecting chords and scales, it’s all blacked out and impossible to read. This means that every time I want to use my Fretlight I have to change to light mode and change back when I’m done, trust me, it gets old, especially considering the dark mode for iOS has been around for quite some time now. How has this not been fixed?? The second issue is even worse, if you open the app and connect your guitar and select a scale to practice the phone screen will time out and you have to wake your phone up to continue playing. So the only options are to change your screen time to unlimited while you are using the app or just deal with the issues that come every time the phone screen turns off. Setting it to unlimited every time and then switching it back every time is ridiculous and ruins the experience. Please address these issues so I can enjoy the Fretlight I spent a lot of money on and can’t return at this point.

### 3/5 — Does not work on android

*2020-05-23, version 2.3.1*

Does not work on android. Only ios

### 4/5 — Genius solution for learning and impriving guira

*2019-11-01, version 2.3.1*

Combined with a Fretlightbp

### 3/5 — Should be more like Yousician

*2018-09-18, version 2.3.0*

There should be an option to see what’s coming up next rather than what you need to play right away. By the time I adjust I already missed the note and I know I can slow it down but that still doesn’t help with anticipation of next notes.

### 5/5 — Jerry

*2018-02-05, version 2.2.4*

I have been playing rhythm guitar for years and this app. Is teaching how to do lead it’s awesome.

### 5/5 — Songs, Features and Fretboards

*2018-01-23, version 2.2.2*

There's a wide selection of the standard guitar stuff you need like a free audio and digital tuner and a free huge chords & scale library. They make it easy to test the app out with free chords, scales, video lessons, a free jam along, and free songs. What's amazing is it has the REAL artist's songs! Haven't seen that anywhere before. There's a great selection of those songs and an even wider selection of video lessons. Plus, a good selection of Christian songs. Cool features like tempo control, looping and an on-screen fretboard that lights up the notes in real-time making learning much easier for me.

### 5/5 — Awesome App!

*2017-10-12, version 2.1.4*

Next best thing to having an actual teacher right next to you! Actually, it might even be better! Great job guys! Please keep the Rick / metal songs coming!

### 4/5 — FIVE STARS but, look in the mirror before making your judgement

*2017-09-26, version 2.1.4*

This app deserves a full five stars, however I cannot stress enough I have issues, and firmly believe they are out of the control of Optek. They know this, but will tirelessly go through troubleshooting with you on the slim chance there is an issue with Guitar Tunes. Early on, I did find a bug and they owned it and fixed it.

This review primarily goes side by side with using the FretLight line of wireless guitars.

My iPad 4 has issues of crashing. I reset it to factory and still have crash issues. This is where people want to blame the app, however being an IT professional for 35 years, my experience and gut tell me it's my old hardware. When and if I can afford to obtain a new iPad, most issues will go away.

I also cannot blame Optek for Bluetooth issues I experience. It is my firm belief from the testing I have performed, it is caused by electrical and electronic interference that again are environmental and in my mind, not the fault of Optek.

The fine people at Optek are more than willing to work closely and assist into every issue brought before them. In fact, they welcome the input of all their users as it only helps to improve future revisions so it can continue to be at the cutting edge as a leader in guitar teaching.

There is a lot going on environmentally to where nobody can control all the problems, but Optek is here to make progress against nature and constantly works to not only improve their already awesome product, but to work with community as well.

Before you drop Garage Tunes, consider the alternative apps and what they provide. I believe before long, you will understand the difference between nature and man, and will realize there is no other app that comes near to what Guitar Tunes provides.

All they want is to do is work WITH us, and they do welcome input as it helps in determining where to focus on improvement.

My only real suggestion is they work with FretLight to develop a mini guitar so the young children and those of us with smaller hands have a better chance learning with less stress trying to mute the sixth string.

### 4/5 — Guitar tunes & Fretlight guitar

*2017-08-27, version 2.1.3*

This program with the Fretlight guitar will give you the ability to slow down and learn to play any supported song, rift, rhythm section on lead, bass, it's not going to do the work of remembering the sequences, but repetition and time will help you in acquiring the skills needed to finally enjoy playing music.

### 5/5 — No Spanish Gospel

*2017-07-24, version 2.1.1*

This application is missing Spanish Gospel, such as Miel San Marcos, Christine D'Clario and Jesus Adrian Romero and hundreds more.... please add Spanish Gospel music. There is a big market for it. Then advertise it on youtube and facebook (in spanish). Thank you and God Bless this app. I did write an email a month ago and have gotten no response.

### 5/5 — Tremendous improvement!!!

*2017-07-02, version 2.0.11*

I've seen some negative reviews and I don't see nor experience those issues. This app is a major improvement from the fretlight video player!!!! I'm really happy with this app and I can finally practice and learn what I want. It works great.

### 5/5 — Interesting..

*2017-06-05, version 2.0.7*

From $2 -$15 , what do I get for $3 , $9 ,$15 ???
Such a high cost too find out if app is good or not.
What about AC/DC & Black Sabbath , Metallica,songs? ...

Can you video it on how app all works ?
The play button on your profile pic don't do anything..

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Connectivity

*2026-05-22, version 3.9*

I’m not sure about anybody else but I still can’t connect to my fretlight guitar.

### 1/5 — False advertising

*2022-07-11, version 3.1.2*

Several days ago I got an email saying that songs were free now on guitar tunes. What I actually got was free samples which were always available at no charge. The email implied that the songs were free what happened?

### 1/5 — It said free it was not

*2020-11-14, version 2.3.1*

It

### 1/5 — I hate this app it is too advanced for a 10 yr old

*2020-02-05, version 2.3.1*

Stupid app

### 1/5 — Junk

*2017-06-29, version 2.0.11*

I wasted time downloading to look at the Jam tracks. They don't tell you the key the jam track is in. Lol, obviously no musicians were involved in this

### 1/5 — Ridiculous!

*2017-05-23, version 2.0.5*

Who is going to pay $1.99-$12.99 for this content?
there's no descriptions on exactly what is in the lesson, so I should just drop $2 or $5 or $13 to try it?
NOT A CHANCE!

Time to delete this one and back to YouTube for free content...

I hope folks boycott this RIDICULOUS app - the pricing for content is OUTRAGEOUS!!!

Reply to Dev:
Great response but unfortunately you've just priced yourself out of the market - IMHO

BTW I own a FG621 and think the guitar is great and use it as a practice tool for scale practice and do already know how to play... This is a steep price for beginners, why not a subscription model that's more affordable?

2nd reply
Sorry to stay on this, but not sure who provided negative feedback on subscription content as I have had this app since original release and certainly was not included in the feedback loop! So my bet is biz model and marketing is wrong here.

I guess folks will vote with dollars as they usually do. I'll see you at GearFest this year again and give you my feedback directly in the booth. I bought my FG621 based on playing there.

Maybe folks are already voting with dollars and you're making millions off of this... my best guess is that you're not, as I know I'm not willing to spend three bucks on a single song. I'd say provide some vouchers for content eval or provide free weekend to prove how good the tracks are just to build momentum.

Sorry, IMHO great idea with good execution but will not fly because of pricing model... But maybe I'm not your demographic.

Certainly am keeping an open mind, but economics are driving my perspective - and still not willing to part with my dollars, I think you need to rethink this one.

### 1/5 — Ripped Off

*2017-05-06, version 2.0*

As an early subscriber I prepaid $30 for one year use and access to some really great tunes. I can understand the problems with copyrights, but where does that leave my $30??
Certainly would be nice to get a refund since the "contract" between me and Guitar Tunes was broken by Guitar Tunes themselves. I can only imagine they made a bundle off of me and hundreds of others. I want my money back. A company that takes someone's money and doesn't fulfill there part of a deal are nothing more than thieves. This is an outrage!!

### 1/5 — No way to play your own music?

*2017-05-05, version 2.0*

The come-on looked good. Slow down any song, etc. Except you have to buy it from them at $2/pop and more. No. Very deceptive promo.

### 1/5 — Uninstalled it immediately.

*2016-11-02, version 1.0.1*

I was anxious to try this app after seeing the two page spread advertised in Guitar World 2016 issue. Searching for "Guitar Tunes" in the app store only reveals a 2013 competitor's app. I had to do to their website, and find the app link there. But first they wanted me to "Sign Up" before downloading the app. So I clicked on "Sign Up First", and it TOOK ME TO THE ITUNES APP. So I downloaded it. Upon opening, it asks you to "log in with your account info". Not "Create an account". I tired going BACK to their website to click Sign Up First AGAIN. Took me to the app again. Immediately uninstalled the app. If this is the kind of run around you get TRYING TO BECOME A USER, forget it. I'll stick with Rocksmith and Justin Guitar thank you.

### 1/5 — Guitar Tunes tm

*2016-10-15, version 1.0.1*

I did bother to go to the website to complete the log on. This also needs to be redone. Did not care for the process. The program itself is not put together very well. It was supposed to be on line in summer , according to the early ads in Guitar Player magazine but did not come out till fall. With the extra time to release it still does not work well. The volume did not work on my iPhone 6 Plus, changing songs was difficult and the looping system is not that user friendly. I'm very disappointed in this program after all the Ad hype they put into it. The developer should have spent the time and money to develop the program instead of a great advertising campaign. Great program concept, lousy app.
Wait a year or two for later generations of this program.👎

### 5/5 — Learning tool

*2024-01-18, version 3.5*

Just started using the app. Intuitive and easy to get started.

### 5/5 — So Much LOVE for this app

*2023-07-30, version 3.3*

5 years and i still refer to this app. This may be the most reliable and function rich app I've ever used for scales, Modes, Triads, etc. It is very 'customizable' to get specific scale information and yet straight forward and easy to use in all areas of this app. The Play Along part works fine with fretlite guitar but i dont realy utilize that portion simply because its just not a fit at this time for my style of learning but boy the scale information is more than i ever expected! Please continue to enovate this piece of a GREAT app.

### 5/5 — Need to make video for bass guitar

A brilliant understanding of how people learn best

### 5/5 — Try guitar tunes it’s nice

*2018-08-12, version 2.3.0*

Guitar tunes paired with a Fretlight guitar is like having Joe Satriani or Dweezil Zappa sit down with you and teach you notes scales chords plus an endless variety of songs and information to learn and practice note for note
