### 2/5 — Finding a word to translate

*2024-03-21, version 1.0*

This won’t open up for me. All I get is a random word & definition, but I can’t change the word. Pretty background but mott the what I’m looking for

### 2/5 — Needs a search option

*2022-01-22, version 1.0*

Just downloaded the app and there are lovely pictures behind each word or phrase. However, I’d like to be able to search for words…enter the English and the Hawaiian word is accessed, and vice-versa. Also, it would be helpful to have the words pronounced or the proper pronunciation written out as in a regular dictionary.

### 2/5 — Pictures and words

*2021-08-02, version 1.0*

The background pictures don’t match the words.

### 2/5 — Many mistakes

*2017-10-07, version 1.0*

This is enjoyable and somewhat educational . . . To a point. Some of the definitions are down-right wrong. For instance, it says kamaʻāina means Native Hawaiian, but it actually means a resident of Hawaiʻi, regardless of ethnicity, and translates to "child of the land." Anyone from Hawaiʻi would understand the vast difference. The program often uses apostrophes in place of the ʻokina (they are not the same thing), and capitalizes the letter after the ʻokina, which is usually wrong unless it's the first word of a sentence. And there are no kahakōs in the words. This feels crowd-sourced in the worst way, with no one checking for accuracy.

### 2/5 — Sneaky

*2017-09-03, version 1.0*

Accidentally touch "app free" and it just takes you there without telling you that you are about to be billed. App is not that good too.

### 2/5 — Good start

*2017-08-01, version 1.0*

It's entertaining and see many nice efforts in this work. For a novice searching for a free app to learn Hawaiian, I'd give it a firm 2 star. There are several spelling inaccuracies which gives a a novice a wrong path to build his knowledge on the language. I encourage the author to review his work with better resources and improve his next version. Perhaps find a few native speakers and collaborate and enjoy the journey.

### 1/5 — Hawaii word review

*2016-12-28, version 1.0*

This app does not pronounce the words making it of limited value

### 3/5 — Searchable?

*2016-04-14, version 1.0*

Cannot find search feature!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Very unhelpful

*2024-10-05, version 1.0*

This whole app needs more work

### 1/5 — Worthless

*2021-06-16, version 1.0*

Do not waste any time or money with this electronic garbage

### 1/5 — Functionality problems

*2020-03-22, version 1.0*

Random word slideshow? That’s it? There doesn’t seem to be any functionality other than a random slideshow. I kept looking for the button to make this app truly practical. I want my money back, and you know what a pain that is after an app purchase. Buy first, and then find out how you just wasted your money.

### 1/5 — This app MIGHT help an alien... but I doubt it!

*2019-03-30, version 1.0*

10 years living here and I can assure you this one is a waist of time money and energy it’s not only contradictory but it’s not even close to the true Hawaiin language .
Why doesn’t Apple regulate these apps? I waited 3+ months to see if it was ‘me’ but after sharing with many of Ohana family/friends... they too have confirmed there is no or very little validity to this dictionary! MOVE ON

PLUS they charge you to even look at a word they consider to be hawaiian regardless if it’s wrong ????

### 1/5 — No search capability, no audio to hear pronunciation.

*2018-05-21, version 1.0*

I spend a great deal of time on the Big Island each year and was interested in learning more about the Hawaiian language. In order to do so, I need to be able to look up a word and hear it’s proper pronunciation. Very disappointing!
I will say the photos are beautiful. That is the only value I have found with this app thus far.
Add a search option, translation feature, dictionary, and an audio of each word and this will be a 5 Star app. Until then, 1 star, because 0 is not an option. Keep trying!

### 1/5 — Not as functional as before

*2017-12-06, version 1.0*

It’s just a bunch of random words now. You use to be able to look words up and see translations.... unless I’m missing something. And on top of that it has all the ads. I can understand it’s needed for funding but it’s not really a useful app anymore. Just more trivial..

### 1/5 — Does not speak the phrase. Random presentation of words, phrases.

*2017-11-06, version 1.0*

Really not useful.

### 1/5 — A'we

*2017-05-11, version 1.0*

### 1/5 — Kukae!

*2017-05-02, version 1.0*

My little sister could have made this app! It's not even an app, it's just a slideshow with pretty pictures and random words like rainbow- anuenue, pineapple- Kalama hiki, waterfall- wailele...
Ugh! Bet money not made by Kanaka! Why even bother to make such a low-quality app at all! Kulia I ka nu'u! Holomua kākou!
Guarantee all those positive reviews is just the guy's cousins, neighbors, and aunty

### 1/5 — Needs a search feature

*2017-01-21, version 1.0*

Seems to be random Hawaiian words with no way to go from English to Hawaiian. Mildly amusing, but no real use.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Aloha

*2019-06-27*

The app is great for me as a fairly frequent visitor to Hawaii. I enjoy being able to use a few words.

### 5/5 — Hawaii word

*2018-10-23, version 1.0*

Easy to assimilate and Remember!

### 5/5 — awesome

*2018-10-05, version 1.0*

Awesome, totally awesome.

### 4/5 — Meanings

*2026-06-18, version 1.0*

Though the pictures reflect things of Hawai`i, one must look at the meaning of each word. Sometimes this app takes the second or 3rd meaning. For example, Hapa. In the Hawaiian dictionary the 1st meanings show: Portion, fragment, etc. all the way to english as “half.” The card shown in the app shows the meaning “Of Mixed Blood.” That is the 2nd meaning in the Hawaiian dictionary. Wehewehedotorg is the online dictionary for one to fact check the word and see where it falls; 1, 2, or 3, etc.

### 4/5 — 😁❤️❤️

*2021-02-22*

This is awesome I totally recommend it to anybody wanting to learn Hawaiian 🌺

### 4/5 — Review

*2021-02-16, version 1.0*

Mahalo! Great app I’m a native Hawaiian 🤙🏽(:

### 4/5 — Word lookup

*2018-08-18, version 1.0*

Disappointed there isn’t a way to translate a Hawaiian word/phrase. App is ok with given translations but I would prefer a way to decipher certain words/phrases

### 4/5 — Fun

*2016-12-05, version 1.0*

Fun for learning

### 3/5 — Hawaiian App

*2024-04-20, version 1.0*

The pictures are very nice & colorful, however, it would be more helpful if the pictures matched the word! Why wouldn’t these match? Also, instead of having to tap on an arrow to flip to the next word, you should be able to swipe right & left on the screen. This alone makes the app feel outdated. Most ppl need to hear the word in order to learn a language correctly so having a button to tap on would be great to hear a person pronounce the word or phrase. Hopefully you can update the app soon!

### 3/5 — Accuracy

*2019-09-08, version 1.0*

Good for simple vocabulary drill. Istill cross- check w/ Pukui dictionary for unfamiliar words
