## What is HazSight?

HazSight is a free (for responders and the public), fully offline reference for hazardous-materials incidents. Search by UN/NA number or chemical name and get plain-language, action-oriented guidance from the 2024 U.S. Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) — without a signal, without an account, without your data ever leaving the device.

Two audiences meet the same placard at the roadside, and HazSight gives each of them the view they need.

FOR FIRST RESPONDERS (FIRE, EMS, HAZMAT)

- Full professional ERG guide pages: hazards, public safety, emergency response, and protective-clothing sections from the 2024 ERG.
- Initial isolation and protective-action distances scaled by spill size (small vs large), time of day (day vs night), and wind direction.
- Live mini-map centered on your current location (with your permission), with a fullscreen view for incident-command-style planning.
- Reference jumps: tap a guide cross-reference (e.g. BLEVE, polymerization) to land directly on the relevant ERG appendix.
- Quick-call affordance to local emergency services from the result screen.
- Distances in imperial or metric.

FOR CIVILIANS & BYSTANDERS

- Plain-language summary of what the placard means and what to do first.
- "What to do now" guidance tuned for someone without protective equipment: how far to move, which direction, when to call 911.
- Calm or emergency banner makes the severity legible at a glance, and lets you escalate with a single tap.
- The same evacuation distances and live mini-map as the responder view, presented with civilian framing.
- Optional read-aloud (text-to-speech) so you can keep your eyes on the scene and your hands free.

WHY OFFLINE

The places hazmat decisions happen are the same places cellular and Wi-Fi fail: roadside, rural roads, tunnels, basement parking, refinery edges, post-disaster zones. HazSight ships the entire 2024 ERG inside the app. Every lookup runs locally, every guidance page renders locally, and nothing is transmitted over the network. The optional location permission is used only to center the mini-map on your position; your location is never sent anywhere.

PRIVACY

No account. No analytics. No ad networks. No data collection. The orange-diamond camera permission listed by iOS is reserved for an upcoming feature (see "What's next" below) and is not used in this release.

IMPORTANT

HazSight aids a decision. It never replaces calling 911 or your local emergency services. Treat its guidance as a starting point, not a substitute for trained on-scene judgment. If lives, property, or the environment are at risk, call emergency services first.

WHAT'S NEXT

On-device camera identification of placards is in active development. It is not enabled in this release — current per-photo inference latency on shipping hardware is too slow to be useful at the roadside. We are keeping it off until it earns its place. Future updates will turn it on once it meets that bar; the text search will remain the default path.
