## What is Health Flare?

Health Flare is a private, offline-first health companion designed for people living with chronic illness.

Track your health story (symptoms, vitals, medications, meals, sleep, flares, activity, and daily check-ins) all in one place, on your device. There are no accounts and no servers of ours. Your records are stored on your device and are included in your phone's own backup if you use one. Weather tracking is optional; if you turn it on, your approximate location is sent to a weather service to look up the conditions.

WHAT YOU CAN TRACK

• Symptoms: log severity and where it hurts, and see patterns over time
• Vitals: blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, oxygen, weight, blood glucose
• Medications & doses: what you take, when, and doses missed or skipped
• Meals: note what you eat and flag reactions
• Sleep: bedtime, wake time, quality, and naps
• Flares: document flare start, severity, and triggers
• Daily check-ins: wellbeing, stress, and optional cycle tracking
• Activity & rest: log exertion with a PEM (post-exertional malaise) flag for ME/CFS
• Appointments: questions to ask, and what the doctor said afterwards
• Journal: long-form entries with mood and energy tagging
• Insights: charts of your symptoms and vitals, with flares shaded in

MADE TO FIT YOU

Everything lives in four sections: Dashboard, Track, Care and Journal. Choose what's in your bottom bar, and turn off the features a profile doesn't use. Turning a feature off never deletes anything, and your layout is kept in backups.

BUILT FOR CHRONIC ILLNESS

Health Flare was designed with the chronic illness community in mind, not the casual wellness market. It supports the kinds of tracking that matter for conditions like ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, lupus, EDS, POTS, IBD, MS, and other complex long-term conditions, including a dedicated PEM flag for post-exertional activity logging.

MULTI-PROFILE SUPPORT

Manage health records for yourself and the people you care for. Add profiles for family members, switch between them in seconds, and keep each person's data completely separate.

YOUR DATA, YOUR DEVICE

• No account or login required, ever
• No servers of ours: the app never sends your health records anywhere
• No analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting
• No advertising
• Records stored in a private, sandboxed database on your device
• Optional weather lookups send an approximate location (rounded to about 1 km) to Open-Meteo
• Export a backup file whenever you like and keep it wherever you choose

Health Flare is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice. Always consult your healthcare team for medical decisions.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.10.0 — 2026-10-21

Health Flare is now in four sections: Dashboard, Track, Care and Journal. Nothing has been removed. Meds, Meals and Sleep are tabs inside them now. A short guide on the dashboard shows where everything went, and can put your bottom bar back close to how it was.

You can also make the app fit you. Settings > Your layout chooses what's in the bottom bar and turns off features a profile doesn't use. Turning a feature off never deletes anything, and your layout is kept in backups.

Also in this update:
• Settings > What's new lists every update.
• Insights charts your vitals, including temperature and blood pressure.
• Each profile can show temperatures in °C or °F. Readings are kept exactly as entered.
• Doses and appointments can move to another profile. Health Flare asks first and says what won't carry over.
• Before an update changes how your data is stored, a safety copy is saved on your phone. If an update can't finish, the app still opens on your data and tells you what to do.
• CSV exports say whether each dose was taken, skipped or missed.
• Appointments that have passed no longer show as upcoming.
• Labels and buttons are easier to read, including at large text sizes.

### 1.9.1 — 2026-10-05

Quick Log reads what you type far more accurately. It weighs the whole entry instead of grabbing the first keyword, so a named medication dose is no longer mistaken for a condition mention, and it only offers a quick save when the values can actually be stored.
Quick Log can record a flare start or end, a mood or cycle note on today's check-in, fluid intake, and (only after you turn it on) bowel or bladder events.
Symptom entries can store body locations, and the symptom form has a location picker.
Profile edit can turn cycle tracking and bowel tracking on or off. Both stay off until you choose them.
Peak flow and step count can be saved as vitals.

### 1.9.0 — 2026-09-24

Password-protected backups
You can now lock a backup with a password. Turn on "Encrypt with a password" when exporting to get an encrypted file that only opens with that password. When you import it, Health Flare asks for the password automatically, in all three restore modes. Health Flare has no server and no account, so a forgotten password cannot be recovered. Plain backups work exactly as before.

The export screen now explains who can read an exported file and what Health Flare does and doesn't do with it.

Safer restores
Restoring now checks that the file is actually a Health Flare backup before changing anything. Previously, choosing the wrong file (a PDF, a CSV, a corrupted download) was accepted without warning. With "Replace everything" this could erase your data on the next launch. With merge or selective import, it reported "0 new records." All three modes now show a clear error.

Quick Log improvements
- Symptoms now match the name you already track, so "brain fog again" logs to "Brain fog" instead of creating a new entry.
- Severity ("8/10", "mild", "excruciating") and diagnosis dates are read more carefully instead of guessed.
- Mentioning a condition, new or already tracked, is detected correctly.
- Respiratory rate readings save properly.
- Sleep with a time range ("8pm to 4am", "20:00 to 4:00") now creates a Sleep entry instead of a Journal entry.

Other changes
- Settings is now in the top bar on every screen, next to the profile icon.
- "Illnesses" is renamed "Conditions" throughout the app.
- "Medications" in the navigation is shortened to "Meds" so it fits on narrow screens.
- Export and import have moved out of the profile switcher and now live only in Settings.

### 1.8.0 — 2026-09-18

Added
- Sleep tracking is now reachable from the app — a nav bar destination and
quick-create FAB for logging a sleep entry, and a way to delete one.
Tapping a sleep entry on the dashboard now opens it for editing instead
  of a blank create form.
- A manual Nap toggle on the sleep entry form, so a nap can be tagged or
untagged directly instead of relying only on the same-day auto-detect
  heuristic.
- A release kit for maintainers — scripts/release/generate_release_notes.sh
drafts release notes and store "what's new" blurbs from actual PR/issue
history for any date/tag range, scripts/take_video.sh and
scripts/take_video_android.sh capture an App Store/Play Store preview
video from a guided-tour integration test, and
scripts/release/build_release_kit.sh runs all three (plus the existing
  screenshot sweep) together. See docs/release-kit.md.

Fixed
- Quick Log no longer drops the pulse reading from a combined entry like
"BP 118/76, pulse 68bpm" — both vitals are now saved. Pulse/heart-rate
phrasing without an explicit "bpm" unit ("Pulse 72", "HR 72", "72 beats
per minute") is now recognised too, and unrelated text with a slash
(like "Ate 3/4 of a sandwich") no longer mistakenly suggests a blood
  pressure entry.
- Editing a sleep entry's bedtime or wake time past the other now shifts
the whole sleep window by the same offset, instead of leaving the entry
  in an invalid state.

### 1.7.1 — 2026-09-15

Setup is quicker and friendlier: a short guided intro now walks you through what you can track, how your privacy works, and creating your first profile — with an easy skip straight to profile creation if you'd rather explore on your own.

Quick Log got smarter too: typing something like "74kg" or "5'6"" is now recognised automatically as a vital reading, and height joins your other trackable vitals.

Plus onboarding polish: fixed layout overflow and improved chip contrast throughout the guided flow.
