I asked my Japanese friend to use her number which also never arrived. Eventually her grandma’s number worked so we used that. Then came the rest of the signup process which was failure after failure after failure. Can’t find my Apple account, can’t accept my email, can’t accept my card. Eventually I gave up and just walked. I know Japanese website and apps are bad but this one took the cake. ### 2/5 — Japanese phone and language skills mandatory *2026-03-06* I had an unreasonable amount of trouble returning the bike I borrowed. No matter what I tried, the app insisted I wasn’t in a station. Thing is, all of the error messages were in Japanese and the after around 10 minutes of struggle, I called the return line - also in Japanese. I read and speak just fine, but if I didn’t, I have no idea how I could have managed. Bike itself was fine. Getting around was lovely. No foreign ID allowed. The developer doesn’t need to bother responding to this, as they know this already and have no immediate plans to remedy it. ### 1/5 — If you are a tourist forget about it *2026-02-13, version 3.19.13* I tried using this application to be able to ride to the grocery store or to go to the shopping mall or to go do my daily activities to do my normal daily activities or even if I missed the train at 12 AM I don’t wanna be paying for a taxi the problem is this application doesn’t work. If you’re a tourist it won’t work at all. You can put your phone number you can select your country. You can be able to put all your information that they want, but you will never get the SMS text message as the reply of saying that you are verifying that, you are the one receiving the SMS text message. It’s pretty sad that it doesn’t work the way I thought it would. Therefore, I decided to give one star and if the only way I was able to get this to work is if I can get the SMS text message back. I’m from United States of America and I have a phone line running with United States of America such as a company as T-Mobile or AT&T. Yet I put the area code which is plus one and my area code where I live and the rest of the number so I’m putting everything correctly as yet, I cannot be able to receive a text message to verify that it is me. So if they can only fix this issue, everything will be different. ### 1/5 — Poor Bicycle Maintenance Poor customer service. *2026-01-19* I wish I could recommend this service, but almost everyday we rented (3 full days) we had to swap out bicycles for dead batteries and low tire pressure. They of course charged us for each new bicycle instead of applying this to the daily maximum. I gave the company a chance to make it right, but they were obviously not interested in happy customers. Complete waste as there were lots of bikes round but couldn’t access them. Terrible app ### 1/5 — False Advertising - Cannot Reserve Two Bikes with One account *2026-05-03, version 3.20.1* The App Store Page explicitly states “One account can reserve multiple electric-assist bicycles at the same time.” However we found this to not be true. There was no way to register two bikes at the same time in the app or any loophole way of registering two bikes by using the QR code, etc. I have a Japanese Phone # so I was able to register in the App however my fiancé does not so when we made our plans we explicitly needed a service that could use multiple bikes. We were very happy that Hello Cycle had this feature and based our entire day around it. When we arrived at the station and tried reserving the two bikes that were there, we were only able to reserve one and use one. Any time I tried to reserve the other bike I would be prompted by saying that I could not reserve it since I was already using a bike and would need to return it prior to reserving another. I was also using a credit card as payment for full disclosure. The FAQ and User Help were also useless with this issue and we didn’t have all day to go through the troubleshooting help from the company. Due to the fact that they lied and we were unable to use their service as written, here’s a 1-star review. There are some things you need to be aware of to ensure your experience is trouble free. Because you need to return bikes to a HELLOCYCLING spot ( not just leave them anywhere) at computing times they tend to fill up around train stations so you may get stuck having to park further away than you like. Before you choose a bike, be sure to check the battery power left - if not the power assist on the bike may die on you before reach your destination (an inconvenience but you can always still use your own leg power!). Unfortunately, you can’t check the condition of a bike remotely so if you use the registration system to hold a bike for you are rolling the dice that the bike you chose is charged and without issues - but you can always cancel if you want to. Finally, becareful to properly check the bike back in and get a confirmation message before you walk away - when I was new to the system I failed to do this once and the system kept sending me reminder messages to my phone the rest of the day until I could cancel it. Thankfully I could use my friend’s cell number who lives in Japan. Otherwise, it won’t work. I think this is a way for them to keep foreigners from renting bikes and causing havoc. Also, app is mostly in Japanese so I had to screenshot and translate in a separate app. Not a very seamless experience. Bikes are nice, just make sure to pick one of the newer bikes and check that tires are filled and battery is full before you head off. Also, you must return the bikes at a designated return spot with available spaces. Cost was capped at 1800 yen for 12 hours but we only used it for 5 hours in Tokyo area.
