## What is Herdcount?

Stop counting them twice. Count them as they walk past.

Herdcount counts chickens, sheep, cattle, plants and people on your iPhone in under a second — from a photo, or live as a mob moves through a gate. No internet, no account, no subscription.

COUNT A MOVING MOB
Prop your phone on the gate rail and let them walk through. Herdcount counts each animal as it crosses the line on screen — no photo, no clicker, no losing your place at 140 and starting again.

Out in the paddock instead? Hold it up and pan slowly across the field. Same thing: every animal counted once as it passes.

IT CORRECTS ITSELF
Pan back to double-check and the count unwinds instead of doubling. A ewe that balks at the gate and turns around comes straight back off the tally. Count the way you actually move.

COUNT PEOPLE, TOO
Scan mode counts people exactly the same way — through a gate, a doorway, or a shed. Handy for a shearing crew, a farm shop, an open day, a market stall, or a school visit.

Herdcount counts people. It does not identify them: no faces are stored, no video is recorded, and nothing is uploaded. There is no server to upload to.

HOW IT WORKS
1. Take a photo or choose one from your library
2. Pick a farming category: Poultry, Sheep, Cattle, Plants, People, or Other
3. Herdcount marks each animal or plant with a numbered dot
4. Adjust the count with the +/− buttons if needed
5. Save to your flock log

NO SIGNAL NEEDED
All processing happens on your iPhone using a built-in model. Works in fields, barns, and anywhere else with poor reception — the same place you count livestock.

### 5/5 — Proof of work

*2026-06-09*

Works really good. Lets me send ‘proof’ that I’ve collected my father-in-laws chickens. He likes that.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.3 — 2026-09-03

Small fixes to scan mode.

Panning back over a stretch you have already counted now feels different in the hand from counting it — a firmer buzz as each animal comes back off the tally, so you can tell you are undoing without watching the number.

Also: the line no longer flickers at the edge of the screen while the camera wakes up, the screen title is readable again in daylight, and leaving scan mode is tidier under the hood.

### 1.4.2 — 2026-09-01

Better mob counting.

Scan mode now holds on to each animal far more reliably as it moves. Markers stay on the animal instead of drifting to the one beside it, animals standing shoulder to shoulder are told apart properly, and the running count is steadier for it — most noticeably on a slow pan across a paddock.

The strip either side of the line is now shaded, so you can see where a crossing is still being decided.

### 1.4.1 — 2026-08-30

Bug fixes.

Steadier tracking in scan mode: the markers now sit calmly on each animal instead of twitching, and the count holds together better on a mob moving at pace.

### 1.4 — 2026-08-28

NEW: SCAN MODE. Stop counting from a photo — count from the gate.

Prop your phone on the rail and let the mob walk through. Herdcount counts each animal as it crosses the line on screen. No photo. No clicker. No losing your place at 140 and starting again.

Out in the paddock instead? Hold it up and pan slowly across the field. Same thing — every animal counted once as it passes.

IT CORRECTS ITSELF
Pan back to double-check and the count unwinds instead of doubling. A ewe that balks at the gate and turns around comes straight back off the tally. Count the way you actually move, not the way software wishes you would.

ALSO NEW: PEOPLE
Count a crowd, a queue, a shearing shed, or a school trip through a gate. Same scan, same line. Herdcount counts people without identifying them — no faces stored, no video recorded, nothing uploaded.

Still offline. Still no account. Still one payment, forever.

### 1.3 — 2026-07-13

Small tidy-up release: shared count summaries now show the date the same way everywhere, plus a few under-the-hood improvements to keep counting quick and reliable.

If Herdcount saves you time on the farm, a rating helps other smallholders find it.
