## What is Hernia Calculator?

The Incisional Hernia Risk Prediction Instrument estimates the chance of developing an incisional hernia after abdominal surgery. The risk is estimated based upon information the patient gives to the healthcare provider about prior health history and the type of abdominal surgery that will take place. The estimates are calculated using data from a large administrative claims database (the Healthcare cost and utilization project (HCUP)) using both inpatient and outpatient data from 2009-2014 in the states of IA, FL, NE, NY, and UT. Please note that the risk percentages provided to you by the Incisional Hernia Risk Prediction Instrument are only estimates. The risk estimate only takes certain information into account. There may be other factors that are not included in the estimate which may increase or decrease the risk of an incisional hernia. These estimates are not a guarantee of results. An incisional hernia may occur even if the risk is low. This information is not intended to replace the advice of a healthcare provider about the risk of incisional hernias after abdominal surgery. The creators of this risk prediction instrument are not responsible for medical decisions that may be made based on the outcomes of the risk prediction instrument, since these estimates are provided for informational purposes. Patients should always consult their physician or other health care provider before deciding on a treatment plan.
