### 4/5 — Assault bug finally fixed

*2019-03-31, version 1.67*

I had been very close to deleting this game from my iPad, but I am glad I didn’t because the publisher finally released an update that fixes the infamous "assault bug" where both sides would roll sixes every time in close combat. This bug had essentially broke the game since close combat is not only frequent but it also is often game-deciding. As an app publisher myself I was completely mystified why anyone would publish a game of this caliber and then completely abandon it without so much as a bug fix update for over a year. Even if it didn’t sell well, a bug-fix for something as egregious as the assault bug would have been a minimal common courtesy for those who did purchase the game I order to make it playable for them. I’m rating it 4 stars instead of 5 mostly because while the game itself is excellent, I can’t rate it 5 stars given the lack of service the publisher has shown so far. I will reevaluate that rating in the future if this update marks a renewed commitment to this title by the publisher.

### 2/5 — Definitely not phone worthy, tablet yes.

*2017-01-07, version 1.52*

Picked this up since I'm a huge fan of the board game and even have the PC version. Wanted to help get the family into it before we progressed to the tabletop.

On an iPhone 7 it's a crime with the font size interface by just attempting to view unit and card info with how small the information is displayed. No real excuse for it as I have plenty of games that have way more information that has to be called up with a tap and display perfectly as if I am looking at a physical playing card in my hand. For an iPad this game would rock.

I'm chalking this up as a handy cap on myself when I play with family and friends since I already know most the rules and can attempt to play it blind.

### 3/5 — Meh

*2016-09-30, version 1.52*

Insufficient help on setting up forces for DYO matches.

Game just doesn't translate well to tablet.

### 2/5 — Fun.. but text WAY too small on iPhone

*2016-09-29, version 1.52*

Seriously, the majority of the text is barely legible on an iPhone 7. The rest of the text is laughably microscopic. 20/20 vision here. Game seems like it would be fun - if I knew what was going on.

### 3/5 — Fun...but...

*2016-09-06, version 1.52*

I really enjoy this game. The graphics are good, game play is smooth and there is enough variety in units and cards to keep things interesting. However, I've run into two bugs that drop this from a five to a three. First, I ran into a problem in which I could not finish one of the campaign games. I would get to the scenario at the end of the allied campaign and the game would crash. Second, and more frustrating, is that, at time, when attempting to move a vehicle, the game locks up. It does not compete the move and I have to restart the app. I've only seen this with vehicles, although it may be a glitch that can affect any move. If these are fixed, I'll regrade the app. For now...okay, but needs a bit of work.

### 4/5 — Almost there - needs another bug fix

*2016-09-06, version 1.52*

This is a great game, and I have really enjoyed it, but there are still a few frustrating bugs. I have gotten to the final scenario of the U.S. Roguelike Campaign, and after I set everything up, the Ai starts to draw its cards, but then just sits there. The "Ai Cards Phase" never ends. I abandon the mission, then hit continue and it goes right back to the Ai Cards Phase. I've also had trouble with vehicles being placed just off the map and not being able to select the vehicle. Also, after my Marvin set was hit, his card now messes up the rest of the cards on the purchase screen (all jumbled up and unable to equip). Hope these bugs will be fixed in the next update.

### 4/5 — Update made it better

*2016-08-30, version 1.52*

This is a fun adaptation of the board game. Only problem is my completed campaigns are not carried over to my phone from my iPad and vice versa.

### 2/5 — I hate being a beta tester

*2016-08-24, version 1.51*

Freezes when you use two armored vehicles in a row. Won't let you use self-ordering units after all ordered units finished. Really expensive for unfinished game

### 4/5 — Very good game

*2016-08-13, version 1.5*

I was a little skeptical when I first bought this game due to a lot of bad reviews. But I was quite relived when I began playing and haven't had to many issues with it. I think it is a Great War and strategy game and would recommend it to anyone who loves board games and war games

### 5/5 — I think it's great

*2016-08-13, version 1.5*

Plenty of content. Includes scenario editor. Lots of difficulty levels with a challenging AI as you move up. Fun mechanics of gameplay with cards, limited amount of units to strategically order per turn, line of sight.
Great in-game wiki.
I first thought unit info was too small but there's a green & white info icon in upper right corner that looks overlayed with junk like other reviewer mentioned but just tap the icon - works fine and basic unit info is easy to read.
Crashed once on iPad 4 , but opened with no loss of turn.
One suggestion - give yourself plenty of time to use editor as that doesn't save until completely designed and ready to play.

### 3/5 — Very fun but buggy

*2016-08-06, version 1.5*

This game is a ton of fun. But bugs cause it to crash frequently during campaign missions (I've tried doing a hard reset to resolve the issue). At a price of $15, I'd expect for this to be a bit more polished.

Maybe when these bugs are ironed out I'll revise my rating higher.

### 2/5 — Definitely needs work

*2016-08-05, version 1.5*

A lot of potential, great implementation of the board game and looks great too on an iPad.

But buggy, information gets overlaid in such a way that it obscures info that you need (there is a 4-digit counter on top of everything, including a help pop-up that refers to an icon and explanation or something, but it's unreadable. Sometimes scrolling doesn't work (but zooming does, which is pretty useless under the circumstances)

And I can't register a new account: no GameCenter support, I assume I need to register with Slitherine's server?! When I try, it claims there is a username/password mismatch... Well duh, I'm only just trying to register my account, NOT trying to log in. And no explanation in the app description, in-game Wiki, or their website on how to make this work.

So as a stand-alone game, it's OK for now, but I'll wait for Slitherine's to fix & clarify this (expensive) work-in-progress before giving it a better score.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Fix it.

*2019-02-12, version 1.66*

Fix the assault auto if a 6 die and I’ll leave 5 stars.

### 1/5 — It would be 5 stars

*2018-05-07, version 1.66*

but you REALLY need to fix the bug where in assault both parties throw a 6 in the first roll, everytime. It is unacceptable for a boardgame, and I can’t see how it would be hard to fix.
The rest of the game is very nice, well done, very fun.

### 1/5 — Buggy trash

*2018-04-06, version 1.66*

This is an awesome implementation of HoN. But it has no support for bugs or new content. And on my iPhone the Assault rolls always come up 6 for both sides. Worthless until fixed.

### 1/5 — Game Currently Broken

*2017-08-18, version 1.66*

My game is broken, even after a deletion and re-load. In assault, both sides always roll a 6. It never changes. Looked on the company's forum and at least one other person has noted the same problem. Seems like something's stuck on their PRNG. I will revise review when it's fixed.

### 1/5 — Crashing

*2016-11-13, version 1.52*

Just purchased the game and it crashes when a game is loading, can I have my money back or fix it?

### 1/5 — Not really phone ready

*2016-09-06, version 1.52*

Don't count on being able to read the text with the iPhone 6/s, the screen is too small. They could afford to make the text bigger

### 1/5 — Great game. Disappointed in sexism.

*2016-08-16, version 1.51*

Honestly this a bit of a protest review.

I'm really enjoying the game. There's some blatantly and unnecessarily sexist dialog in the final tutorial mission though. If that gets changed in an update my rating goes to 5 stars. I Facebook messaged you guys about it as well.

### 1/5 — Mini iPad 1

*2016-08-08, version 1.5*

It blows that you can not play on mini iPad generation 1. First time I have ever ran across this. Did not check requirements bought it now can not play. Slitherenne needs to fix this. I play all kinds of games that are higher graphics more involved. Why why why? Do not make the mistake I did 15 dollars down the drain. I can play on my iPhone 6 but to hard to see text need to fix blow up capabilities so I can soon on everything to be able to play.

### 1/5 — Brand New iPad. Game Runs Like Garbage

*2016-07-29, version 1.5*

I figured a lot of the complaints were coming from people with older hardware..... Nope. Brand new iPad, still runs like garbage. I can't get past the 2nd order.... Anywhere, before it locks up or force quits..... ANYWHERE!!

How this buggy pile of garbage made it through any kind of QA absolutely eludes me. How Apple let this buggy garbage on to the App Store baffles me.

In the decade+ I've been downloading apps, I've never felt like I got screwed. I do know. I want my money back(yeah right) and I'm calling you every heinous name you can think of right now

### 1/5 — Supported devices

*2016-07-29, version 1.5*

Make sure you check the forums as this game is not supported on numerous I pads. Even though the description only mentions I phone 4

Looks like they have updated the requirements. To bad a lot of us already purchased it not knowing.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great game

*2019-04-14, version 1.67*

Fantastic port. Still some minor bugs.

### 5/5 — Enjoyable

*2017-11-25, version 1.66*

Fun World War 2 board game . I couldn't get the physical copy at the time. I'm glad they had a digital port. I later got the a physical copy once playing this for a while. They only negative is not seeing more of the expansions that are offered with the physical copy. I guess this wasn't a strong seller since the store hasn't been updated for a looooong time😩

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2017-08-07, version 1.66*

This game is rad and I love playing it. But can you please add notifications to multiplayer for when playing online? That would be awesome! Thanks!!

### 5/5 — Surprised...

*2017-06-27, version 1.66*

Been disappointed with other slitherine games on here, a lot of them, actually. Took me a long time to pull the trigger on this one, giving the price and size of it. Glad I did, they finally have a game I would recommend 😎...

### 5/5 — Great game

*2017-06-14, version 1.66*

This is a great war game ported from a board game to iOS. I'm playing it on an iPad and it's a lot of fun. I've been staring at it for a long time at the game store. I've wanted to play it for a long time but wasn't sure I could rustle up someone to play against me. Well, now I can play against the iPad. What I'd really like is "Shadows over Normandy." But HoN is a great game even if SoN never happens.

### 5/5 — Outstanding!!!

*2017-04-13, version 1.60*

I love the depth and complexity in this awesome strategy game. Just as an FYI-I spoke to Devs this morning and received a response/resolution within hours of reaching out to them. There may be some question as to if HoN is still in active deployment. I am not clear of what exactly is meant by 'active deployment' in the forums, but my experience with Slitherine has been outstanding. This a great game and I believe it is worth the price.

### 5/5 — Excellent game!

*2017-02-03, version 1.52*

This is an amazing recreation of the board game and a good port of the PC game. I personally think the text is perfectly legible on an iphone 7. The only thing I would ask for is more expansions and for the roguelike campaigns to have truly randomized maps and scenarios. Other than that, this is amazing!

### 5/5 — Reminds me of tabletop COH

*2016-08-20, version 1.51*

Reading through the gameplay performance issues, I had some doubts about the performance of this game on my iPad Mini 3. No issues so far while playing. Very smooth.

The gameplay reminds me almost of a tabletop Company of Heroes. At least, if I had to translate COH mechanics of cover and rock, paper, scissors type countering into a board game.

### 5/5 — Outstanding

*2016-08-18, version 1.51*

There are a number of standouts about this conversion from the cardboard version
1. It's not a 'straight port' a lot of work has been put into the look and feel. It is a very dynamic looking UI
2. The plethora of modes available: Campaign, online play, rogue-mode, map editor, build and army. All very nice
3. The incremental tutorial in the campaign. Adding new features as you work along.

Point 3 brings me to an important point. I thought there was a complete absence of some cardboard version features until they were revealed later on in the campaign. Opportunity Fire and Smoke is present, just not at the beginning.

This is the most fun I've had with a board game port since Carcassonne 'back in the day'

### 5/5 — Fantastic game!!

*2016-08-16, version 1.51*

Great sound, graphics and gameplay. I really loved the in depth tutorial. It took me step by step teaching me the basics of gameplay. There's a full wiki so that you can look up anything you didn't quite understand. This game is one of those easy to play a little harder to master games. There are four or five difficulty levels so really anyone can play and have a great time. The graphics and sounds are fantastic and there's a nice touch of humor too. Three campaigns, a rogue mode, and a full game editor round out this very full featured game. Bravo!
