### 4/5 — Great game!

*2022-02-27*

Good story telling and excellent gameplay. My only issue with Trese brothers games is their idea of what “easy” is. I play this game on easy and I’ve already died almost 50 times, and there doesn’t seem to be anything I can do about the part I’m on now. Same thing with Star Traders; Frontiers. I can win against most enemies but Xeno will beat you no problem on easy unless your away team is geared up with the best stuff and high level.
I’m going to keep trying because this game is so good, but it’s challenging. Thank you for making an awesome game.

### 4/5 — Excellent game however...

*2020-01-12*

... after a while grinding through spiders that level up with your party gets repetitive.

### 4/5 — One of the best turn based games for mobile

*2019-10-22*

I have been playing the games since the early days and still find myself coming back whenever there is a plot update. The characters are well written and the plot engaging. The different strategic scenarios and the tactics are varied and keep me thinking. We did have to wait a year for the climax but now that it is out I am back. Waited to write my review until the final plot release.

Would have rated it 5 stars but the latest updated crashes the game just as it loads the final sanctum. I have been waiting 5 years for this and now I will have to wait for a patch.

### 4/5 — Great game! Some small bugs to fix

*2019-05-23*

I love this, it’s complex and big and not too difficult to get into, etc. But it crashes a bit, and there are lots of minor glitches, such as getting a “danger” reading from exploring or far-sight spells when actually it’s just a treasure chest or gem.

### 5/5 — Very good soooo much to do you get lost

*2017-05-21, version 4.4.5*

I'd say it's like oblivion dungeon style with a Turn Based Strategy feel to it with a team mix feel like dragon age love love it 😭❤️

### 4/5 — Heroes of steel

*2017-04-24, version 4.3.1*

If you like tactical turn based games this one definitely worth your time :-)

### 4/5 — Has potential

*2017-04-02*

Huge rpg that becomes a bit of a grind. Idiotic backstory that I resent having to click through, in fairness I suppose most dungeon/ rpg's are the same.
Think I took a different route somewhere that the developers didn't anticipate and the story got mixed up, plus much extra battles in an already overloaded game - so time to delete.
However in fairness that's around 30 hours play and I am still in chapter 2 of 4 - wow. An extra star for giving us a demo version- so rare these days.
Some improvement would be gained by letting us buy the optional characters without restarting, no one in their right mind is going to start this all over again.

### 5/5 — Fixed, Great game support!

*2016-11-11*

Every time I try and move it says path not found and my team is stuck in the krellin deeps. It's very frustrating tapping on every square and not being able to go anywhere. Game was fine before last update. If fixed it would be five stars, until then it will sit in unplayable condition. Started a new game to see if that helped, same issue. Can't move in or out of battles. Very frustrating to see a great game rendered unplayable by an update. Playing on ipad air.
Edit: The bug was fixed within a day. Not many developers support their games like that. Game is awesome again, and I can move! Thank you!

### 5/5 — Excellent Improvements

*2016-08-17*

When I first picked this game up it was a bit meh, to be honest. It dragged on a lot and I didn't get very far.

Fast forward a few years and this is one of my favourite games to play at the moment. I'm about 50 or so hours into the campaign and barely halfway through the story 😬! What I didn't realise in my initial playthrough was how the map opens up as you get into episode 2, becoming less linear and story choices start appearing that affect the rest of the game.

Combat and exploration is much faster these days and keeps the pace of the game up, and while the game definitely gets more interesting the further you get the start is now much improved since release.

Combat is interesting and varied, and boss fights in particular can get very tense - I'm still working on my strategy for the larger set-piece ambushes and boss battles.

Overall a sprawling well-executed RPG with dedicated developers I can easily recommend if you like turn based tactics.

### 5/5 — Fun game

*2016-07-26, version 4.2.39*

Great job tresbros!

### 5/5 — Heroes Of Steel RPG

*2016-07-01, version 4.2.39*

**UPDATE**
I didn't buy HoS until after Templar Battleforce was released, so I didn't get to experience all the growth this game has gone through. However, it has received 8 updates since I purchased it, each making the game run smoother, tweaking things, general quality of life enhancements and a few updates with added content. With these 8 updates, it has improved quite a bit. And 8 updates ago, I considered it one of the best strategy RPGs in the AppStore. While I wouldn't put it above Templar Battleforce, that's only by setting/story preferance. The gameplay here is just as solid, challenging and entertaining as the later. If you're looking for a turn-based strategy RPG that's deep and offers up an insane amount of content (120+ hours!!! - and it doesn't just slog on or throw extreemly convoluted [and ultimately close to meaningless] upgrade/craft systems at you like some other 100+ hour SRPG titles...), this is one you should definitely check out. If you don't like the price point, you can snag the free version and pay for each of the 4 episodes individually. Get sick of it? Don't worry about buying any more episodes... both are consistantly updated, so you don't have to worry about not having something the other version has either. Great stuff. Developers like this are incredibly easy to want to support. GRAB THE ELITE STRATEGY RPG BUNDLE!!!! Totally worth it...

*original review*
My first experience with the Trese Brothers was through Templar Battleforce. When that came out, I looked up previous games by this unknown (to me) dev team, and saw that all of them had received some INSANE post-release support through updates. After that, I jumped on Templar Battleforce, and wound up LOVING it. I haven't completed it yet, but once I do, I'm sticking with it until I can beat it on the hardest difficulty (of which there are 7!!!). Anyway - a week later and Heroes Of Steel is on sale - can't beat $2 for a game that has grown SO SO SO much since it's original release (and isn't even done yet!). I (unfortunately) never had a chance to play this game pre-version 4, but ATM, it's killer. It shares a lot with Templar Battleforce (though TB seems to have a deeper skill tree, kinda like their other game, 4X Empires), but they are totally separate beasts (kinda like Rodeo Game's Hunters and Warhammer games). Anyway, if you're into Tactical/Strategy RPGs, this is definitely a game you should check out. The added characters are kind of like Warhammer Quest's extra characters (in that they don't unlock any new areas, but do have completely different skills and weapon/item equips that you can mix in with your strategy, while removing part of your previous strategy [the character whom you'll be exchanging for the new one]). I can totally see it adding a bit of depth and definitely to the replay value (I have no idea how much the story changes based on who you're playing with as I haven't completed my first game yet)... so chances are I'll be picking them all up at the end of the story. =oP
The Trese Brothers can safely say they have another fan that will jump on everything they release in the future.

### 3/5 — A Constant Battle...With The Camera

*2016-05-18*

Heroes of Steel has a lot going for it.

The turn based combat doesn't blow the doors off the rpg stable but it is solid and fun.

Two issues for me. Mission design. Each level is a huge map that frankly becomes a slog. Bite sized dungeons and cocktail sausage quests i would have enjoyed so much more.

Looking at the same dank tile set, hour after hour, shuffling your heroes from one battle to the next can get tedious quickly. Smaller more finely crafted dungeon quests would have served the game mechanics so much better.

And the camera. Please let me control it. I click on a character, use an ability, the enemy moves, I sneeze, the phone rings and the camera shifts. Just slightly. A wobbly yo yo effect to and fro designed I'm sure to send me gurgling mad.

It's working.

Three stars then. Two for the game and one for the bout of Cthulhu madness.

### 5/5 — Отлично

*2016-02-23*

Интересная тактическая РПГ. Купил несколько игровых персонажей, дабы разнообразить команду. Большой мир, множество предметов и разнообразные враги.
С каждым обновлением игра привносит огромное количество нововведений. Спасибо за постоянную поддержку.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Why did I pay for a game when the characters are locked behind a paywall still…

*2025-09-03*

Literally just a scam- you pay for the game only to find out if you want to use different characters, you have to pay for those too, each separately. Sorry but if I buy a game, you don’t lock their characters under ANOTHER paywall or 6. Insane. This shouldn’t be allowed on the App Store. Disgustingly predatory. I’d give zero stars if I could

### 1/5 — Unplayable on iPhone 12 mini

*2023-04-28*

Newer iPhones block part of the traditional rectangular screen with a speaker and rounded corners. This game does not take that into account, with key buttons inaccessible behind the speaker, and with buttons in each corner difficult to press.

### 1/5 — In App Purchases for Characters

*2018-10-28*

I was unaware that half the characters would be locked behind a paywall. $2 each character which means to unlock the full game, you’re paying for the game three times over. I don’t support this method of cash grab.

Requesting refund.

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2014-05-27*

This game has a great story, interesting mechanics and a simply terrible combat mechanic that ruins everything else about it.

Enemies level up as you do, which is fine. Enemies that cannot be hit by any attacks and never miss is not ok. At level 25 on my thief, I have maxed out bows and dexterity, +7 ranged accuracy from gear and a bow that has 6 accuracy on it. Using a skill that adds an additional 9 to accuracy. 9 misses in a row. Also, I didn't mention that it's an area of effect attack and there were five enemies in the attack zone. So that's actually 45 misses. At the same time, my outlander has 70 armor, +9 parry, +9 dodge and gets hit 80% of the time, often for nearly as much damage as it's possible for the enemy can do. It's like the developers didn't even try to make it believable.

Now let's talk about when I actually hit. From what I understand of the game mechanics; at least as they are (terribly) explained in game, armor is supposed to reduce incoming damage. So when my attacks have a range of 65-85 and the enemy has 20 armor I should be dealing 45-65. Which leads me to question how exactly a character can deal 2 damage on an enemy with 26 armor when just the +damage I have on an attack is 92. Plus the weapon damage which is 37-58 or something close to that. My minimum damage should be over 100 after armor and I hit for 2. When the enemy has 450 hp, hitting for 2 means you are going to die.

Make it believable guys! I'm thinking about seeing what options I have regarding getting the money I paid back. Do yourselves a favor and skip this game; it isn't worth it.

### 2/5 — Enemies level with you

*2018-11-06*

All enemies level with you, meaning there’s no sense of growth or progress. I enjoyed the game until I realized this but quit playing almost immediately afterward as every battle felt pointless. I honestly don’t understand this gameplay choice but at the least they could have made an option to turn it off. Instead it defeats the entire point of rpgs for me. If this issue doesn’t bother you then you may enjoy the game, it’s got fairly decent combat and the dialogue is well written for an app of this budget. It’s partly why I think the enemy leveling bothers me as much as it does; otherwise it would have been a very good tactical rpg.

### 2/5 — Buggy

*2015-04-29, version 3.2.17*

Great game to play until you get into a cavern with no way out. Currently have a high level party stuck in Sanctuary and the exit doesn't actually work. Looks like I am moving on from an otherwise entertaining game.

### 2/5 — The app store is the worst place to write reviews

*2014-09-05*

I mean, lets be serial. It is hard... Even the stars are hard to press.

But this is only a 3 star game. I have played it pretty far... and let me assure you, combat is tedious.

I do not mind the crappy graphics, or the so so plot, and it is a decent rpg.

But it is hard to level up - you can only do so at set points, and combat is really boring. It is turn based, and enemy moves happen slooooowwwwwwwly.

So i explore, fight an enemy, explore, find another enemy, then turn off the app. Because combat is borrrring. They need to
A. Make combat 100 times faster
B. let me auto heal after battle.
C. Have auto teleport, instead of waaaaaaaaalking everywhere.

Ugh, i will drop it down to 2 stars. I forgot hiw tedious the game is.

### 3/5 — Abandons games

*2025-11-13*

This developer likes to abandon their games on other platforms, leaving people who paid for them without the product they bought functioning. I don’t expect it to work for a lifetime, but they truly love abandoning games.

### 3/5 — Could Use Some Serious Polish

*2019-07-20*

Indie developers? Awesome. Party-centered turn-based RPG combat? Great. Gear, monsters, classes, skills, and saving throws? Count me in. Unfortunately, the game lacks polish and has some clunky flaws. I didn’t get very far into the game (only an hour or two), but it seems to draw VERY heavily from the Avernum series for PC.

First, there is no cloud save (that I’m aware of). I bought the game on my phone but it was a bit small so I tried downloading it to my iPad and there’s no way to transfer the save file. Boo that.

It also doesn’t screen rotate, so when I’m trying to play while my phone is charging, I’m forced to play with the cord wrapped awkwardly around the phone.

Menus are clunky (using potions on specific party members could really be improved), and the inventory/status views are bad. It feels like a very early version of a PC game instead of building on what works well for other games. New characters cost $2 each when we’re already paying a premium for the game itself. I love that indie developers are venturing into this space, but this version isn’t worth the money to me.

### 3/5 — Great game... Needs iPhone XS Max screen support

*2018-10-19*

I love the game but I really need the screen support for iPhone XS Max. It would be much better FULL screen. Thanks.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Best game

*2025-02-04*

Please make a part 2

### 5/5 — Great game

*2020-09-16*

One of the best RPG’s out there.

### 5/5 — Great story based RPG- needs rogue feature

*2019-06-04*

This game is so great but I hate doing story games. Wish there was a rogue dungeon option like pixel dungeon where you just go level to level and it gets harder and you have to keep everyone alive through randomized scenes and procedurally generated landscape.

### 5/5 — Solid!

*2019-05-26*

Thoroughly enjoying RPG entertainment! Well balanced gameplay that keeps me excited to see what’s next... my only complaint is my thief has a bit of a hearing issue!

### 5/5 — Good game

*2019-04-22*

Good game but the last few days the game close after i save then tap on the screen. Ipad pro2.

### 5/5 — Rare RPG gem

*2019-03-07*

Good old turn based RPG without any free-to-play nonsense.
Easy to control on iPad. Nice story.

### 5/5 — Whaaaaaat?

*2019-02-16*

This game is amazing. For $5, it’s extraordinary... we would’ve paid $50 for games like this a while back. It’s long, the dialogue is well-written (this alone makes this game unique in the App Store universe) and it’s a great strategy game. I play way too many games on my iPad... and this was the first big pleasant surprise I’ve had in quite a while. The App Store seems to be stagnant these days.

As for the dude who rated it low because enemies level with you... wow, what a d-bag. Every RPG is designed around enemies getting harder as you level up. I just had to say it. Creators, you guys rock! I’ll keep an eye on the company!

### 5/5 — Play this game now!

*2018-12-03, version 4.5.17*

If you like fantasy rpgs then definitely get this game! It’s got an awesome story and fun rewarding turn-based gameplay . This is the first game I played by Trese Brothers and it’s definitely my favorite.
So far I haven’t played a game by these guys that I didn’t like, Trese Brothers are just awesome and I love to support them. I have bought this game and all characters/episodes on android and iOS and I did the same with a few of their other games. They are not out to get rich, just make awesome rpgs and they constantly update their games and are friendly and quick to respond to customers. I have so much respect for them.

  Thanks for being Awesome and
making great games! You guys are my heroes! 👍

### 5/5 — Great game eagerly awaiting the ending..

*2018-10-11*

Come on episode 5!

### 5/5 — This game is amazing, period.

*2017-08-04*

I've barely gotten started, but it didn't take long to see this is an incredibly well-crafted game. Controls are excellent, plot is great, writing/characterization is great. If you are into RPGs and can only afford the space for one, this is it.

Well done.
