## What is HEXASTRUM?

HEXASTRUM — A Shogi-Style Chess

A brand-new hexagonal strategy game that fuses the ideas of shogi and chess. On a 61-square hexagonal board, you fight using two distinct movement systems: straight moves along adjacent edges, and diagonal jumps across vertices.

■ Pieces named after the stars
Aries (Pawn), Taurus (Gold), Serpent/Ophiuchus (Silver), Leo (Rook), Sagittarius (Bishop), and the King — five piece types carry the names of the 13 constellations, and each is promoted into its "guardian star" upon reaching enemy territory (Mars, Pluto, Uranus, Neptune). Play through a story of constellations like never before.

■ 11 CPU ranks, from Beginner to 10-dan
Play against CPUs across 11 ranks, from a reassuring "Beginner" level for your very first match, all the way up to "10-dan" for players who love deep reading. Win to unlock the next rank and earn titles — string together wins at even odds and earn the "Eternal" title.

■ Features that expand the way you play
- 5 types of handicap games: enjoy matches even against a stronger opponent
- Kifu (move history) replay: look back on games you've played
- CPU-vs-CPU watch mode: just sit back and watch two CPUs battle it out

■ For those aiming even higher
Master the Eternal 10-dan title, and 7 special CPU opponents named after the seven luminaries await you in the "Sun, Moon, and Seven Stars" tournament. Clear all seven, and you unlock the 35 mate puzzles of "Hoshizume" (Star Mate).

The core game is entirely free to play. Rank unlocks, special modes, and strategy guidebooks with real match commentary are available as optional in-app purchases (even without any purchase, you can play all the way through the Beginner-to-1-dan CPU ranks).

[Note for English-speaking players]: The in-game interface is in Japanese, but a free, complete English guide covering all rules, piece movements, and screen terms is included and accessible from the title screen. ### 1.1 — 2026-08-02

■ You can now see what the CPU played
Every CPU move is shown as an animation: the piece lifts, travels and lands. This was added in response to feedback that it was hard to notice what had moved and where. It also runs while watching CPU vs CPU and while stepping through a game record one move at a time. Tap the board during the animation to skip straight to the end — and your own moves are never delayed.

■ Check is much harder to miss
When your King can be captured, the rim of the board and your King's cell now pulse red — slowly, like breathing — so you notice even when your eyes are fixed on the position. The pulse is deliberately slow so that it is easy on the eyes.

■ The 300-move draw is now enforced
If neither side has won by move 300, the game is a draw. This rule was described in the manual and in the strategy guides, but until now it was not actually applied during play. A draw does not count as a win: it grants no title, unlocks no rank, and resets a run of consecutive wins.

■ Also in this version
- New setting: "piece-move animation". All four assist features can be switched on and off individually.
- The last move now marks its origin square and its destination square differently.
- Corrected a rule description in the free Complete Guide (English / Русский): only your King wins by reaching the enemy throne (a "try") — no other piece does.
