## What is Hierolyte?

Discover the ancient Egyptian writing system, one glyph at a time.

Hierolyte brings the beauty and mystery of hieroglyphs to your daily routine, and now teaches you to read them. Each day at midnight a new hieroglyph unlocks for you to explore, learn, and add to your growing collection. No rushing, no cramming, just a calm journey through one of humanity's oldest writing systems.

A New Glyph Every Day
Wake up to a beautifully rendered hieroglyph waiting for you. Learn its sound, its meaning, and see it used in an authentic ancient Egyptian word. Watch your collection grow from a single symbol to a repertoire of over 200 essential signs. [VERIFY: sign count]

Two Reading Courses
When you are ready to go beyond collecting, two in-depth courses teach you to actually read.

Reading Royal Names takes you from the Rosetta Stone to the temples of Abu Simbel, decoding the cartouches of Egypt's pharaohs sign by sign, the way Champollion did in 1822. Start with Ptolemy and Cleopatra, and work your way to Ramesses, Tutankhamun, and Thutmose III.

Reading Real Words goes further, into the script the Egyptians used every day: the signs that carry whole sounds and whole ideas, and the silent labels that make a script without vowels read clearly. It ends with the offering formula, the single most common inscription on stelae the world over, so you finish on a complete, real text.

Each course runs to 20 lessons with interactive exercises and scored quizzes.

Spell Your Name, Free
Type any name and watch it become a cartouche, built live from hieroglyphic signs, each one tappable so you can learn what it is. Save it or share it. It uses the popular tourist alphabet, which is a phonetic approximation rather than how an ancient scribe would have spelled the name, and the app is honest about the difference.

Genuine Egyptological Content
This is not simplified or "fun facts only." Hierolyte teaches you the same transliteration system scholars use, the same sign classifications from the Gardiner Sign List, and real example words attested in ancient texts.

Articles, Flashcards, and Progress
Unlock educational articles as you go, covering how hieroglyphs actually work: reading direction, phonetic values, determinatives, and more. Review what you have collected with flashcard sessions to find the signs that need more practice. Build daily streaks, watch your collection fill a calendar heatmap, and track your progress across every Gardiner category.

Designed for Daily Ritual
Hierolyte is intentionally unhurried. Spend a few peaceful minutes each day with a single glyph. The constraint becomes the feature: by the end of a year you will have internalised the core hieroglyphic repertoire without ever feeling overwhelmed.

Academically Accurate, Beautifully Presented
Every hieroglyph is rendered using JSesh, the standard tool used by Egyptologists worldwide. The warm, museum-quality design creates a contemplative space for learning these "divine words," as the ancient Egyptians called them. Full support for iPhone and iPad.

Begin your journey into ancient Egypt. One glyph at a time.
