## What is HikeBuddyAI?

Hike Buddy AI is a curious companion for city walks, travel, and hiking.

Explore freely and let the guide look for places worth noticing, or import a GPX route and follow it your way. Hike Buddy understands the direction you take, loops, starts midway along a route, and detours. When a nearby place deserves a story, the guide can research reliable context and speak at a useful moment.

Hike Buddy remains useful without an external AI service. Apple Intelligence can enrich stories on compatible devices, or you can connect your own OpenAI-compatible provider. Keys are stored in the iOS Keychain.

Routes, coordinates, and history remain on your iPhone. Optional providers receive only the context required for the feature you choose.

Hike Buddy is a discovery and route companion, not a substitute for official trail information, local safety advice, or good judgment outdoors.

Hike Buddy 1.4 introduces a completely redesigned Explore experience, richer place discovery and smarter timing for guide stories. You can now ask the guide about a place whenever you want to hear more, open nearby places from the Live Activity, and enjoy smoother, better-centered maps during active walks. GPX routes, elevation, AI and voice setup, and onboarding are also improved. The app is now free.

HikeBuddyAI now makes narration setup clearer and easier to tune.

Settings have been reorganized into dedicated sections for narration, exploration, AI provider, voice, audio, and data. Language selection is easier to browse and better reflects the selected voice context.

AI and voice configuration has been improved for compatible providers, Mistral, and Voxtral beta voices. Guided coaching during hikes is smoother too, with better timing around spoken messages so useful guidance fits more naturally into the outing.
