## What is Hina?

Hina is an application built using the Maramataka phases of the moon. With Te Reo Maori as the default language for each phase, see what Maori have used for generations as a guide for planting, fishing and living.

Hina brings an interactive approach to looking at the moon and determining appropriate times for performing many of the basic necessities.

Hina was created to be used as a guide with other language names for the phases of the moon. Polynesia in general has deep ties with ancestors who used the phases of the Maramataka to navigate their way through the year and survive based on what they knew as a way of life.

Hina is a project that will continue to evolve as a resource to help Maori and those interested see how ancestors used the Moon.

## Key features

### 1/5 — Blank Screen

*2026-01-14, version 25*

I have used Hina previously since it had launched, but since I’ve had an iPhone 13 Pro Max, the screen stays blank. I’ve had this phone for well over two years now and I periodically check to see if anything has changed as this was my favourite app to use and it still hasn’t. I’m leaving a review in hopes this will be sorted. A website would be good as well. I was following the FB page for updates and there’s been nothing since Feb 2025.

### 1/5 — Hoha

*2026-01-13, version 25*

The moon disappears and app becomes useless

### 4/5 — Where did you go?

*2025-03-22, version 25*

My go to for a few years until you fullas stopped supporting this. Want to pass it on?

### 5/5 — Bugs

*2025-03-11, version 25*

Stuck on Whīro Moon Phases, please help me 🙏🏽

### 3/5 — GREAT APP…BUT

*2025-01-29, version 25*

Love this app and used it regularly. But moving from 2024 to 2025 made all the content on the app disappear. Had to delete app coz we at the end of January and still
Nothing.

### 2/5 — Spelling mistakes

*2024-03-05, version 25*

This app has macrons in the wrong places including English Kupu like ‘crāyfish’

### 3/5 — Disappears

*2024-01-11, version 25*

From time to time, it completely disappears, and no matter what you do, you can’t get it back. Very frustrating, no solution.
I’m not sure whether or not there’s an update, it doesn’t seem to be so an insoluble problem

### 1/5 — No info

*2024-01-08, version 25*

Currently only seeing the background of the app
No moon phase, date or writing since Jan 1st 2024
Needs an update.

### 4/5 — Info

*2023-07-16, version 25*

Could make it easier to navigate through the info of the moon phases. For instance, swiping left or right is easier to see which phase is current, however trying to gather the info on the particular moon phases is difficult and I seem to have the info pop up at random times. Great app though, would be great if there was a tap here to get info on moon phases.

### 4/5 — Love this! But moon phases are too early?

*2023-02-25, version 25*

I love this app. So simple and attractive. I am trying to learn about the maramataka and using this as a guide. However, it looks like the timing of the moon phases is slightly out. Full moon will be on Wednesday 8th March 2023 at 1am. However, this app says Ōturu (full moon) is 6th March. Can this be adjusted?
