I really never thought I would be able to remember so many different characters, and this made me surprise myself with how well I’ve been able to retain them. I did take time in between sets of characters and reviewed a lot before moving to the next set, so of course that helped. The only thing that would make it better would be if there were some simple games to practice the concepts outlined in the bonus lessons. If that was added, this would be a perfect kana app. ### 2/5 — There is no audio! *2025-12-17, version 0.6.2* Very strange problem there’s absolutely no audio whenever I click on the little icon speakers to listen to how I should pronounce noises and it’s apparently my fault. The mental images used to memorize the characters are really helpful even to non native English speakers like myself. The regular drawing practice sessions are also very good, especially if done on an iPad. I should mention that I experienced a few crashes and sometimes had to restart the app as it froze, but that left aside everything was fine from a software perspective. Sarebbe stato bello anche imparare i kanji ma non importa perché l’app è completa e utile, altro problema è che all’inizio si possono imparare solo sette caratteri hiragana e per comprate hiragana e katakana spendi sette euro e solo per l’hiragana 4 ma ne vale la pena fidatevi! ### 4/5 — Great app *2023-11-16, version 0.5.2* It’s a great app to learn the basics of the Japanese writing system, if you can speak and are comfortable in English. Unfortunately only trains you in writing, not so much in reading. I find myself having an easier time coming up with Japanese characters for syllables now, than figuring out the syllable for a character I amlooking at. At the moment it feels like I can write faster than I can read, but this is a minor complaint and the difference between the two should disappear with more practice from other sources. Also bonus lessons on ten-tens, chou-on, small vowels, etc should ideally offer some lessons to fortify those principles as well. All in all, worth the money (if you want to go beyond the introduction) and recommendable. ### 5/5 — Realmente funcionou *2023-08-22, version 0.5.2* O sistema de mnemonicos dele ajuda muuuito na memorização bem como a repetição se desenhar cada um deles. Estava relutante em pegar por ele mas não me arrependo. I really appreciated the accessible language and storytelling. I will say that the writing feature can sometimes be finicky (I would start writing and it wouldn’t register until later) but it is so worth it if you’re serious about learning Japanese. ### 5/5 — Great way to learn *2026-01-30, version 0.6.2* After using this app for a couple of weeks I can undoubtedly say that it’s done better for learning Hiragana and Katakana than anything else I’ve ever tried. When you download the app you’re immediately given the entire Hiragana alphabet to work with. If you want access to Katakana you must first pay $5 USD, but in my opinion it’s worth it. The only thing I’ve noticed is that for some of the letters, the app can get a little finicky. For example while I was writing the hiragana “そ(so)” I noticed that you need to be nearly perfect or else it will make you retry the letter, while with hiragana “ら(ra)” I wrote it completely wrong and it still let me pass.
