### 4/5 — Subscribing helps

*2024-09-13, version 1.8*

Evolving from 40-odd years of print issues to online, I still want access to HT as a resource.
Subscribing helps by giving access to all of current issues, not just bits. I also have access to the archive.
Pity the online search function does not go back 40 years.

### 4/5 — No more option to buy individual issues

*2023-07-25*

Very well done app rendition of a wonderfully done magazine….No more possibilities to buy individual issues I was able to buy single issues in the past somehow it’s not more an option…

### 3/5 — Version 1.7.3 - No table of contents and inconsistent sharing functionality

*2023-01-26*

I loaded this version in the hope of solving my problem: The previous version would not allow the saving of articles to other apps (such as Instapaper). Now oddly enough, in some month's issues it will and in others it won't. Mysterious and a bit annoying.

Also, there is no longer a table of contents in any of the issues I've looked at (about 7-8 across 3-4 years). This is obviously even more challenging than the other problem. The only solution I've found is to go to the website to find the contents then go back to the app and find the story. Could be worse I know, but most apps don't make you take these steps.

As always, great content and when you can find what you want the pages are really nice but the app is a little hard to use.

### 4/5 — No ability to share subscription with family?

*2022-12-26, version 1.7*

As much as a love this publication I find the inability to share my subscription with my family really irritating. Please consider adding support for family sharing in a future update.

### 3/5 — Good but...

*2021-02-18*

The app is good, for reading the magazine... but it would be great to access the daily updates/news/articles from the app as well. National Geographic does this very well. What are you waiting for?

### 3/5 — Great magazine but...

*2019-11-02, version 1.4*

The app doesn’t offer abstracts/previews of articles just the titles. For those who want to dip in and out rather than subscribe this is a major shortcoming. I use the app to view the contents but often prefer to buy the physical magazine - the format of the physical magazine is very good indeed.

### 5/5 — First class.

*2019-05-02*

The app works smoothly and the content is first class. It brings fascinating aspect of history alive in an engaging and informative way.

### 5/5 — History Today

*2019-04-02*

I appreciate your app

### 5/5 — App Finally Fixed

*2018-08-26*

Back in late July & most of August, couldn't access app. Excellent app so long as it continues to work.

### 4/5 — great app but subscription options are confusing.

*2018-07-11*

the app is great to use but subscription options are confusing, so my comments are more about subscription process than app.
Print subscription with included digital access (this app), digital subscription, digital single issues, and then optional archive access with a web site that is only available with archive purchase makes it very difficult to know what you bought. For example there is a 3 cheap issues print option with flow-on to regular subscription which seems not to flow on, although the included digital access does. this is not an issue in the app, just the magazine subscription process.

it appears that under the subscription you get acess to current and older issues (but no archive), but they may go away when subscription expires. when I download an older issue, i don’t know if included or I am actually making a purchase.

it is all just too complex.

i have other digital subscriptions (e.g. Ancient Warfare magazine) which are easier to use.

### 5/5 — Great app, works perfectly

*2018-06-29*

I was a subscriber to the print edition for some time, but as an American it felt wasteful to have a magazine mailed to me from across the ocean when there was another way -to say nothing of the high yet understandable subscription rate for overseas subscribers. The app is just simply perfect, and provides the educated level of history writing I’ve become accustomed to without causing me to fret over my carbon footprint. I can access the publication across my devices, and receive the periodical on the day of publishing without having to wait for it to come in the mail. Technology is amazing, and I’m glad HistoryToday is leveraging it.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2017-12-31*

Remarkable essays, sharp authors, clear concepts, splendidly illustrated, balanced writings without individualism .
British..in few words.

### 4/5 — Fantastic ... but

*2017-12-24*

Great magazine and fantastic app, but I want to access issues from before this particular app's existence.

I was on the Vikings edition, but after the update it’s disappeared, as has a ton of editions I wanted to read.

### 4/5 — History can be fun and relevant

*2017-07-28*

Great service!

### 5/5 — S

*2017-07-25, version 1.4*

Brilliant app!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Content good, app has lost access to issues page

*2024-03-08, version 1.8*

The content is very good, as it has been for decades. Something has gone wrong with the app on IPad making it unreadable - nothing appears on the 'issues' page.

### 1/5 — Scam.

*2023-07-22*

I purchased a monthly subscription via Apple and I still can’t access articles. The app is either a con-job or the makers are morons.

### 1/5 — Complete waste of time and Money

*2020-01-18, version 1.4*

Useless app, worse support. Really, just don’t bother.

### 1/5 — Search function

*2019-08-01, version 1.4*

Can’t seem to find a search function, which I would have assumed would have been a given for the History Today app.

### 1/5 — Problems

*2016-02-17*

I get Country Life every week and it's a breeze. History Today is work. When you download an issue why doesn't it stay there? Why do I have to download it again. So far I'm only into it for $4.99 so it's not a disaster but I may choose to cut my loses. The content is great though and that's why I'm writing.

### 1/5 — Unhappy

*2015-12-06, version 1.0.0*

Restore button doesn't work so I can't bring my subscription from the old app into this one. I have no choice but to stick with the old app until this is rectified.

### 1/5 — Bugs

*2015-11-26*

Previously purchased editions not showing up in new app.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2015-11-20, version 1.0.0*

Restore Purchase function not working. Rubbish. Stick with the old one if on iPad.

### 2/5 — Not very useful

*2024-01-30*

I can read articles in the app, but I can’t print them out or share them with others (via email or text) or save to other apps. Reading onscreen is hard on my eyes. I am canceling my subscription and will remove the app.

### 2/5 — Flawed....

*2016-05-14*

There is no provision for restoring purchased items. Why not?
This app is most definitely not user-friendly!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Quality

*2025-06-03, version 1.8.1*

Quality app for quality writing!

### 5/5 — Popcorn

*2024-11-03, version 1.8*

I inherited a stack of History Today when my Dad died. I am hooked. The app suits me.
Tasty bite sized kernels that I think about and talk about all day long. I love it. Thanks BK. x

### 5/5 — Looking Back with Pleasure

*2024-07-01*

The essays in History Today are both erudite and inviting. This journal was the first to which I ever subscribed, having first learned to love it many years ago thanks to the encouragement of my father-in-law, one of the two weekly book-reviewers for the New York Times. The essays are invariably interesting, well-written, and enjoyable. I learn a lot but also have fun. As scholar of the Renaissance I find myself learning lots and lots about other periods and the intellectual expansion is a pleasure. Don’t stop! Anne Lake Prescott

### 5/5 — Keeping the past present

*2024-01-20, version 1.8*

Like many history graduates, I’ve retained my passion for the discipline even if I’m not working in the field. History Today is an ideal way to keep that passion fed. I particularly enjoy its breadth and variety, even as it shows up how woefully limited in chronology and geography was my own formal study of the subject!

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2023-06-23*

I look forward to receiving History Today every month. The variety of the articles encompasses a great swath of time and space. I like being exposed to all the different views. I get my mind changed on all sorts of topics. History Today teaches how to think about history.

### 5/5 — HistoryToday

*2021-06-04*

Fantastic magazine with short form articles written by experts with up to date info and concise to the point views. Thank you

### 5/5 — Back to history

*2020-12-29, version 1.5*

I first read HT nearly 40 years ago on the recommendation of a teacher and enjoyed its different take on history compared to our text books. After a long break it’s great to see that the plurality of voices, topics and debates are as strong now as then. Thank goodness.

### 5/5 — Review feelings

*2020-05-08*

Excellent range of articles. Always interesting.

### 5/5 — Fine design

*2019-12-08, version 1.4*

Well illustrated, finely researched and well balanced articles. A free well designed app included in subscription.

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2019-12-01, version 1.4*

It’s great to have this much History Today at my fingertips.
