Hvad er højmosen Horreby Lyng 

Horreby Lyng er Falsters eneste højmose og den største på Lolland-Falster. Med sine 150 ha er den solidt plantet i landskabet. Højmosen er opstået ved tilgroning af en smeltevandssøen, idet planterne sammen med tørvemosser de såkaldte Sphagnum, er vokset ud over vandfladen. De naturtyper, som findes i en højmose, er alle næringsfattige.

Under anden verdenskrig påbegyndte man en massiv indvinding af tørv i mosen. Der blev etableret et sindigt system af kanaler for at afvande mosen. Denne afvanding har medført en massiv udtørring af højmosen, som har bevirket, at de unikke højmosenaturtyper næsten er forsvundet.

Guldborgsund Kommune fik i 2013 tildelt midler fra EU LIFE støtteordningen til et naturgenopretningsprojekt i Horreby Lyng. Formålet med projektet har været at sikre en vådgørelse af højmosen, så man kan retablere højmosen naturlige miljø.
