## What is HokieTransit?

HokieTransit shows Blacksburg Transit buses in real time. It is built for Virginia Tech students getting around campus and town.

WHAT IT DOES

Live departures near you. Nearby routes sorted by what leaves soonest, with the walk time to each stop.

Live means live. A live badge and a countdown appear only when a bus is reporting its position. Scheduled times are labeled as scheduled, so you know which one you are looking at.

Route maps. See the route, where the buses are now, and the arrival time for every stop along it.

Step-by-step directions. Enter a destination and get each step: walk to this stop, board this bus, get off here. It updates as you go.

Your class schedule. Add your classes once and HokieTransit tells you when to leave, based on live bus times rather than a fixed reminder.

Service alerts. Quiet when service is normal, prominent when a route you ride is affected. Full route names instead of codes.

On your Lock Screen. Start a trip and your next bus stays on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, so you can check it without opening the app.

HokieTransit covers Blacksburg Transit's campus and town routes. No account needed.

HokieTransit is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Virginia Tech or Blacksburg Transit. Route and schedule information comes from Blacksburg Transit's public data.

### 5/5 — If only this came out sooner

*2026-04-14*

I’ve been on campus for the past 5 years, and I gotta say, if you can’t sell this to BT I would be so disappointed. You’ve done a great job and you deserve some payment!

### 5/5 — User Interface

*2026-04-10*

The UI on this app is far better than the previous one. I felt as though the other one was a bit harder to use

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.7.0 — 2026-08-28

Is it busy?

New: check how busy campus is before you head out.

- Gyms: live occupancy for War Memorial Hall and McComas Hall.
- Dining halls and Newman Library: tap once to say how busy it is, and see what other students are reporting.

Route detail now shows every bus running your route, not just one. Tap a bus to follow its own stops and arrival times. Live arrival times are also matched to the right bus far more reliably when buses are running behind schedule.

Map and navigation:
- The live map is now a full-width button on the home screen, and it opens where you left it.
- One tap switches between satellite and the street map, and you can flatten the map to 2D.
- Your style and 2D choices now carry into turn-by-turn navigation.

Transit Feed has moved into About.

### 1.6.1 — 2026-08-26

Fixes for class reminders.

• Morning classes now get a real bus-timed reminder. Before, anything starting before about 10:45 fell back to a generic "head to your building" nudge with no bus and no walk time.

• "Bus arriving" alerts now come through instead of being dropped.

• Your saved classes no longer disappear if you delete and reinstall the app.

• We now ask about notifications when you add a class, rather than the first time you open the feed — so reminders don't get switched off by accident.

### 1.6.0 — 2026-08-24

HokieTransit 1.6 makes step-by-step directions keep up with the actual bus.

DIRECTIONS THAT FOLLOW YOUR RIDE
Your step advances seconds after you get off the bus, instead of hanging on the one you already left.
If your bus served the stop early and pulled away, the plan rolls forward to the next real departure and says so.
Board the same route in the wrong direction and a banner catches it mid-ride, with a one-tap replan.
Every leg counts down from live predictions, including the second bus of a transfer.

TRANSFERS YOU CAN ACTUALLY MAKE
A connection now needs a real safety margin beyond the walk between bays, not a paper one.
When live tracking shows your first bus running late, the connection you would have missed is dropped for one you can still catch.
If there is no better option, you get a plain warning instead of a promise that will not hold.

A MAP THAT LOOKS LIKE THE STREET
Buses are drawn as buses, in each route's own colors, lying flat on the map as you tilt and turn.
When the live feed goes quiet, buses dim and say so instead of gliding on stale data.
Trip lines now draw the whole journey: the walk to your stop, the transfer between bays, and the last walk to your destination.

YOUR CLASSES, BY CRN
Add a class with its CRN and HokieTransit fills in the real meeting times and buildings.
A class that meets in more than one room gets a separate leave-time reminder for each meeting.

Also fixes a crash when asking the assistant for directions during an active trip.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-08-22

HokieTransit 1.5 brings a redesigned home and clearer, more reliable transit information.
A FRESHER HOME
Cleaner cards and a faster path to nearby departures, trip planning, and your schedule.
LIVE NOW MEANS LIVE
Live badges and countdowns appear only when a bus is reporting its position. Scheduled estimates are clearly labeled. The Lock Screen and Dynamic Island now indicate when information is stale.
SMARTER TRIPS AND ALERTS
• Trip planning can now find routes on reduced-service days using available live bus positions
• Service alerts stay quiet when normal and become prominent when they affect a route
• Full route names replace ambiguous codes
FIXED
• Adding classes no longer closes the editor
• Stop links open the correct stop
• After-midnight trips show the correct times
Plus dozens of smaller reliability and performance improvements.

### 1.4.4 — 2026-04-21

Smart Schedule reminders now work the moment you add a class as we ask for notification permission right there, and the backend is more reliable about actually sending them. Plus small fixes to late-night bus times and alert formatting.
