### 3/5 — bad interface

*2026-05-30, version 2.5.16*

too many steps to start a recording. you need to make it
easy to immediately record audio and stop
without having so many prompts to click

### 2/5 — Furchtbar

*2026-03-19*

Die App ist so ziemlich das Furchtbarste was ich in vielen Jahren als UX gesehen habe. Vollständig unbedienbar, selbst einfachste Dinge konnte man nicht verstehen. Keinerlei intuitive Oberfläche.

### 2/5 — No silence trimming

*2026-01-17, version 2.5.14*

I use it for speech and there is no silence trimming, what a shame...

### 4/5 — Near Perfect!

*2025-09-18, version 2.5.12*

Been using this app for years! I feel an option for folders would be amazing as it’ll be more organized and make it easier to locate certain tracks.

### 4/5 — More features.

*2025-06-27, version 2.5.11*

I love this app so much! The accessibility is great with voiceover! Can you make more editing features? Also can we take away the staticy sound? And can we share as mp3 files? (Unless I may be stupid and am missing that)

### 4/5 — Love it

*2025-05-05, version 2.5.10*

I love this app, I only wish I could export or share mp3 format. It does way more than I need which is to do simple edits on short notification files but they have to end up in mp3 format so I need a format converter.

### 3/5 — The snapping is horrible

*2025-03-27, version 2.5.9*

I dislike when I copy or move around a sound to master in another track but I have to copy the sound and fade in and fade out and then add in my track by using the original and fading in and out and mastering together but there’s a clipping around due to the snapping that makes it misaligned or not moving to correct position.

Why can’t you make separate clips in one track like Audacity?

It so hard when your code snaps every without nonlinear or free flow audio snapping.

Audio snapping is ruining my mastering.

And why can’t you implement an AI waveform snapping where it matches the waveform to another track maybe one below is assigned to be or match the waveform above it.

If it’s a different waveform as a stem use the original unaltered stem and track to that waveform to make the stem match where that stem is compared to the others to make each steam match correctly.

When I do it manually each track doesn’t want to move where I want it to and theres phase distortion due to the track snapping to a set position when I don’t what it to do that.

This app is unintuitive and hard to work with. The rigid “clip snapping” does not allow for precise alignment of tracks.

Please make ways around this.

Please allow for An AI, with an option to match the waveform to what track and pressing the track asking sure if you want to match the current waveform to this say and press yes.

And it will match the waveform to the track, if it doesn’t match in bitrate or speed-

it will apply all the advanced features of methods to change any known differences in each track to apply to the track you what to change or alter.

This is for if the track you want to move is a tape recording or a very damaged track.

### 4/5 — ADD CLIPPING BACK

*2025-03-21, version 2.5.9*

please add clipping feature back

### 4/5 — Almost perfect

*2025-01-25*

This app is gold and I love it for taking recordings on the go. WAV export is a great plus, as as well as the simple, nice looking UI. This being said, some oddities should be addressed, though. Here suggestions:

1. Add mute / solo buttons the tracks headers! This is crucial for any multitrack audio editor.

2. Add the effects tab (“more…”) to the track headers (context menu of the wrench button) as well. Right now, this is only applicable to selections that are made to the waveforms. It is cumbersome and unnecessary to select the entire waveform at its length, in order to apply an effect to the track itself (e.g. to normalise it).

3. Regarding the selection tool, the left and right handles (blue dots) are quite misplaced. They cover up the centre of the waveform, right where we need to see it when we want to precisely set the selection borders. No precision possible this way, more of a guesswork instead.

Five stars guaranteed, if you manage to overcome these flaws. And by the way…thanks a ton for offering a one-time purchase! You wouldn’t have seen any money from me for a subscription model. ;)

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback! You can mute/unmute tracks in Hokusai by double-tapping on the volume dial. If you’re zoomed out on a project, double-tapping a track will select all of it, making it quick and easy to select it all, to apply an effect (if you’re zoomed in, it’ll select the part you can see — triple tap to select everything, on or off the screen). Hope that helps!

### 4/5 — great audio editor

*2025-01-23, version 2.5.9*

Hokusai Audio Editor is an excellent audio editing app for iOS that combines powerful features with a user-friendly interface.

However, one notable downside is the lack of a “add markers” feature. This can be frustrating for users who need to pinpoint specific parts of their audio during longer projects. Adding this functionality would make Hokusai even more versatile and efficient for detailed editing.

### 5/5 — Great simple multi-track recorder

*2025-01-10, version 2.5.9*

Love it. So I can sing harmonies with myself and share the recording with friends. The editing options are not extensive (in the free version) but they are sufficient for me to create something worth sharing (eg trimming, muting, limited relative volume adjustment). Export works great. Interface feels intuitive. No ads. Thank you.

### 5/5 — Best Audio App

*2025-01-08, version 2.5.9*

I use this app for collecting evidence for court, ambient nature sounds, bird song and other stuff. It works so well and the functions make it really easy to clean up audio and alter files.

### 5/5 — wonderful

*2024-12-04, version 2.5.9*

just what I was looking for to stitch audio recordings together, GarageBand is garbage. This is a great and simple app

### 5/5 — Simplicity always wins.

*2024-12-03, version 2.5.9*

I can say that it is a wonderful app. Please develop it, change the icon, etc. Of course, don't destroy the simplicity that is the key to success in anything. Congratulations to you and your team. Good luck.

### 2/5 — App keeps crashing!

*2024-11-29, version 2.5.9*

Though the progress was at least still in tact while it closed on me, it’s extremely annoying.

### 5/5 — I love it

*2024-09-23, version 2.5.9*

it's so cool you must gitt thiss

### 5/5 — Absolutely fantastic

*2024-08-03, version 2.5.9*

love this app!!

needed a better alternative to garageband or voicememos since they had very limited audio editing functionality, and i found this app!! the free version has precise cutting and basic editing, but the paid version is what you REALLY want. it's like audacity for an iphone lol.

lots of really cool effects and tools and stuff, and is great for a budget recording setup for any application. i use it to record music, and it works really well with external devices.

a couple things for the devs though:
- i think it needs a little bit more optimisation, it runs a tad slow and could be better
- more tools revolving around audio repair would be nice, stuff like spectral editing (although that could be hard to run on a phone haha)
- more audio generation tools, id love to be able to add tape artefacts and things like that
- i'd love to be able to use external plugins with this! i have some apps that can be used with garageband and such that add more modulation settings and effects. would love to be able to use them with this.
- try to make the layout a bit user-friendly. it looks nice, but there are a couple issues with dead edges and input detection and response, so i think that could be fixed a bit.

overall, a great app, and i'll most definitely be using this in the future. hope the devs keep working on this, i'll be recommending it to everyone!!

love, lucyvale <333

### 4/5 — Great!

*2024-07-06, version 2.5.9*

The editing is fantastic. Separating channels from stereo works great! I do wish there were recording quality settings tho. I use rode mic to record. I want to make sure I’m getting my full 24bit recording quality or .caf. Same for sharing too. Need 24 bit or 320kbps aac.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Doesn't Work

*2025-11-27, version 2.5.14*

Don't waste your time. It's slow, clunky, and barrels worked. The record quality is fine but building a basic multi track is pure garbage. Why would I "Upgrade" when the basic doesn't even work? Fix it and I'll buy it but otherwise, trash it.

### 1/5 — Annoying garbage.

*2025-05-18, version 2.5.10*

Become annoying garbage. Unstable buggy. Not easy to use UI like merge or same track duplicate and merge etc easy to use features. Ugly messy UI and tools.

### 1/5 — Fehler

*2023-03-24*

**Developer response:** I’m sorry to hear that you have encountered a problem while using Hokusai. We can unfortunately only offer Customer Support in English at this time, but if you can get in touch by email using the Contact Customer Support link inside the app, with more details about the problem you’ve encountered, we can look into that for you. Thanks!

### 1/5 — Muito ruim

*2022-07-23*

Não gostei, não tem quase nada de funções para analisar sem pagar, e vc não sabe o que vai comprar

**Developer response:** Hello! You can find the full list of commands available in the paid version — and, in many cases, try them out for yourself on some example audio — by opening the upgrade panel and picking “Preview the Upgrade”. Hope that helps!

### 1/5 — Wonky , unstable

*2022-01-25, version 2.5.6*

After really trying to use this app
That to this date has no updates
It's seems that they couldn't care about fixing the bugs in this program or are unwilling .
The touch screen sensitivity is almost non existent. The slowness of the app to react is almost as aggravating as waiting for the product to load on your iPad Pro 2020 only to watch the app shut it self down or go black screen, in the middle of a show ...
not good .
after showing the CS staff at Hokusai the issue on video and pictures
they're trying to tell me it's on my side.

### 1/5 — Hokusai 2

*2021-08-12, version 2.5.6*

Confusing, unable to edit music and put in
music library

### 1/5 — Stuck

*2021-07-03*

Stuck while recording voice.

**Developer response:** Hello! I’m sorry to hear that you encountered a problem while recording. If you contact us directly by email (via the Contact Customer Support link inside the app) with more details, we can look into that for you. Thanks!

### 1/5 — Good, but…

*2021-06-11*

very good, I like the fact that it's accessible with VoiceOver, but it's frustrating not being translated into Portuguese.

### 1/5 — Music Library won’t open

*2021-03-09, version 2.5.4*

When I press on the Library, it flashes for a second and then disappears. Makes the app useless for me.

### 1/5 — Copyright protection makes this app useless for me

*2020-12-14, version 2.5.1*

Nothing more to add

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Indispensable and fun to use for all skill levels

*2026-08-01, version 2.5.16*

I’ve been blind for nearly a decade, and I’ve used every DAW I could since then, including Logic, Garage Band, Reaper, and a perpetual Pro Tools license, among other apps. As I learned to use Pro Tools, Hokusai gave me a mobile playground and workspace to understand audio production concepts further without a UI learning curve. You truly won’t find a deeper and easier app. If you’ve used iOS Voice Memos or the old Windows Sound Recorder and wish the big DAWs could be that easy, fast and stable, Hokusai and its sibling apps are for you. Seriously!!! Buy this app no matter where you are in your audio engineering journey.

### 5/5 — Great app but need some features urgently!

*2026-06-12*

Update: Thank you for your kind response. I didn’t realise that Hokusai is a different kind of editor. I will try Ferrite and share my thoughts there.
——————
I purchased the Pro Pack hoping to use Hokusai as a mobile alternative to Adobe Audition for editing audio on the go. I've enjoyed using the app, but there are two limitations that have made it difficult for me to fully incorporate it into my workflow:

1. Audio clips cannot be freely dragged and repositioned on the timeline. The only workaround I've found is adding silence to create spacing, which is cumbersome and time-consuming.

2. It’s missing volume envelopes. For working on the go, I don’t care for advanced automation features. But volume envelopes is indispensable.

I would be very grateful if you could consider adding these features in a future update. Since I've already invested in the Pro Pack, I'd love to make Hokusai a bigger part of my audio-editing workflow.

Thank you.

**Developer response:** Hello! It sounds like you’re looking for a very different kind of audio editor to Hokusai. Fortunately, we make one of those too! It’s called Ferrite Recording Studio, it supports moving clips around on a timeline and volume automation envelopes and many other features, and you can find it in the App Store. There’s also a comparison guide on our website, to help figure out which of Hokusai and Ferrite is right for you. Hope that helps!

### 5/5 — Great software!

*2026-04-26, version 2.5.15*

Needed to use an alternative for remote location podcast construction and editing and I have now been using this for nearly 8 years. Easy to use and does what it needs to with being complex. I keep checking for alternatives and keep on coming back to this software.

### 5/5 — Best Phone Audio Editor!!!!

*2026-03-17, version 2.5.15*

Best audio app ever! I’ve used since 2012 and have been using it to mix music for my dance studio since, I’ll never use another app! It gets better with every update

### 5/5 — Purchased

*2026-01-08, version 2.5.14*

I spent an hour just trying to figure out how to access gain. Finally I got it. Tap the waveform quickly and then the menu appears. I wish this was just in the wrench menu. Anyway, after figuring it out, I’m happy. I can balance my audio and save my files to a higher quality WAV format.

### 5/5 — long time fan!

*2025-12-02, version 2.5.14*

this app is rockin. i’ve had it in my back pocket since 2014 at least, and it’s always been handy! Even now as i sit with my ukulele and sing songs to my newborn, it’s so great to have a multi track handy so i can compose a kids song with my kid, and not need a bunch of interface mumbo jumbo.

### 5/5 — Sensational

*2025-10-16, version 2.5.13*

This little app has started me down a new path of creative audio enjoyment. Amazing value.

### 5/5 — Perfect

*2025-09-06, version 2.5.11*

Very good app. Thank you..

### 5/5 — Omg I am crying!!!

*2025-03-02, version 2.5.9*

I am blind and I have been looking for an app that has all the features this app does and is actually accessible with VoiceOver and you guys did it! The pro version is so worth every penny also! Thank you thank you thank you! You are seriously amazing for making this and I hope it never goes away like literally I've never had an issue with this app and I can do so much! And the one thing I am struggling with I'm pretty sure is a user error ha ha but if you are even considering downloading or paying for this app just do it you will not be disappointed!

### 5/5 — Very Good

*2025-01-23, version 2.5.9*

It would be the best editor ever if it had auv3 support. The interface is so good, there’s tons of functionality, being able to use my favorite pugins would be the ultimate, i’d pay extra
