It is the main artistic genre of woodblock printing in Japan. Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景) is an ukiyo-e series of large, color woodblock prints by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). The series depicts Mount Fuji in differing seasons and weather conditions from a variety of different places and distances. It actually consists of 46 prints created between 1826 and 1833. They look especially poor on a device with a retina display. The user interface is inconsistent. The app presents English text in portrait orientation, and Japanese in landscape. The images in landscape mode are much larger, but English speakers don't get to choose to see both their own language and the larger images. A double-tap on an image enlarges it, but without reference to the underlying physical screen size, so the new image size is neither optimal in size nor is well-positioned on the screen. In addition to the the original series of 36 woodblocks, the app includes another group of 10 images which were not published with the original subscription, but which are equally lovely. However, although one can switch from image to image with a swipe gesture for the original 36, that doesn't work at all for the additional 10; it's a completely different UI model, where the 10 thumbnail images are always present, and one changes from one image to another by tapping on a thumbnail. In contrast, a swipe gesture while looking at the 10 additional images changes the mode of the app to a short presentation of ukiyo-e, consisting of a few scrollable paragraphs, and a few unidentified images from other artists. These images are larger than thumbnails, but not large enough to really see well, and can't be enlarged. (These images are also very famous ones.) There is a single piece of music available as a background track, lasting for several minutes. It's a composition performed on koto, and is very nice. It's also nice that the developers chose to use an entire real performance, rather than a short loop. Neither the composer nor the performer is identified or credited, at least in the English-language materials. Because the series of "36 Views of Mt. Fuji" is so famous, and has long ago passed into the public domain, there are many high resolution images available on the web. I'd suggest that you just search for them, and look at them there.
