The app simply does not log events that are triggered by automations, Siri access and other standard methods of changing the state of HomeKit devices. I have tested it under multiple scenarios, with my computer awake, not in any focus mode and HomeLog open and running. It just doesn't log what it is supposed to log. I'm giving it more than one star because the UI is nicely built. But the functionality is lacking. Disappointing. ### 2/5 — Still doesn't work *2024-03-30* I have given two stars as the concept of this app is great, and fills a much needed gap in HomeKit. I thought I'd risk it as the last review saying it didn't work was two years ago and there has been an update since, but unfortuantely it still doesn't work. It is sporadic in the items it logs, does absolutely nothing unless the window is open, and even then appears to lose contact with HomeKit for hours on end and then updates with some events, but not others. A really great idea, which I would happily pay for if it worked... but it doesn't :( ### 1/5 — Not helpful *2023-02-13* Apple Home/HomeKit is a hot mess and everyone knows it, but… Save your money, this app only logs some actions if the app is open, and not in the background. Pretty useless if the iPhone is all you’re using. Time better spent would be to put more pressure on Apple to make sure “it just works”, because it doesn’t sometimes. **Developer response:** As noted in the app description before you purchased it and on first launch of the iOS app.: The iOS app must be actively open and running to log HomeKit events due to restrictions around HomeKit data. The Mac app can log continuously if the logging helper is enabled. Feel free to request a refund. ### 1/5 — Useless because you need the app to open all the time on screen to get log *2022-11-12* To run this app to work, you need to keep this app open on screen. If you leave from this app and leave it on background, it won’t work. You won’t get any log. How can you keep open the app on screen all the time to get your home log? This app should not sell anyone like this and steal your money. Yes, there is writing in description. You will over look it because you will think that you can leave it running in background. No, you need to keep on screen all the time. You can not use your phone anymore to get log. This app should not be here at all. Can’t understand why they still even sell this when it shouldn’t be here at all. I did not steal your money, you just failed to read the App Store description and first launch experience. I never mind paying for an app - but this is misleading. You get very little without adding on additional costs for the “Pro” version. When you mislead me you won’t get another penny. **Developer response:** This is misleading. HomeLog has absolutely no subscriptions at all. ### 1/5 — Doesnt log anything meaningful *2022-03-16* Forget figuring out any gremlins. All this does show you an event with the time/date. No indicator of what user or device triggered the event so no way to figure out anything more than the notification bubble you get on the phone for free. **Developer response:** Hi, Sadly HomeKit does not provide that information to it's own app or to third parties. Even when running on a Mac on the same network, only about half of the changes seem to appear in the log. Worse, after a day or so, the app starts to freeze on opening, and the developer indicates that it is likely because the log file is 'full.' The developer is planning a fix for this condition, but so far, it is basically unusable for me. It's a shame, really. It's a great design, and I love the menubar option, sorting categories, etc. I love the other 'Home' apps in the Pearce Media family, but given its inability to log consistently, this one isn't worth the price for me. Big fan of all your apps! ### 5/5 — BACK IN WORKING ORDER!!! *2024-12-12* The previous bugs have been fixed, and the app no longer crashes on startup. So glad! ### 5/5 — Works well. *2022-03-20* Logs what’s going on in my HomeKit setup. Great to be able to run on my phone and see what’s happening in HomeKit when devices/automations/scenes are triggered. You do have to have it open to keep the log going but the price includes a Mac app so I run it on that if I need to run it for a longer period. ### 5/5 — Does what it says on the tin *2021-10-31* I always found it frustrating that I didn't have any easy way to the various HomeKit events as they occurred throughout the day. This solves that problem in an easy and unubtrusive way. I just leave the helper app running on my Mac (which runs 24/7), and a complete log is stored away for when I need it. Bonus points to the developer for making this a "universal" purchase that also gets you the iOS version (though the Mac is a better fit since the app needs to be actively running to work). All in all, it's a handy tool to my HomeKit setup. ### 5/5 — Extremely Helpful *2021-10-24* HomeKit can sometimes be a black box. You have absolutely no idea why it’s doing what it’s doing. Things change state for seemingly no reason. Devices show no response. Figuring out what is actually going on is incredibly difficult in those instances. Luckily this app makes that process SO much easier. Having visibility into changes overtime to your HomeKit setup is incredibly useful. Did I mention the developer is also incredibly responsive and looks to be planning new features all the time? ### 5/5 — Allowed me to reset my homekit network *2021-10-23* This just allowed me to reset my homekit network (devices were saying no response). I’m not sure what called this to happen but if I can fix once in a full moon outage by opening this app, I’ll take it! Thank you! ### 4/5 — Nice looking app, does what it claims *2023-02-12* This app will run and log all the HomeKit events that happen on your network. The logger needs to be running for this to work. It would be nice if the app could show which device issues a command. **Developer response:** Sadly Apple does not provide what device causes a scene to run or even what user did it. I wish they did. ### 4/5 — Does what it says *2022-11-16* It's a little thin around the edges (filtering could be much imprived) and occasionally it seems load up multiple instances of itself, but when it comes to simple diagnosing of homekit issues, it works, and that's enough. ### 3/5 — Nearly there *2024-01-05* Like another reviewer has said the helper app on the Mac is great, and if you have a server, you can run it 24/7 on there. Brilliant. The problem arises when you want to check something historically that the macOS helper application has probably captured but soon as you open the iOS app, it just starts capturing it from the moment you open the app. Not useful. So like the other reviewer mentioned the iOS app really needs to be a viewer of the Mac help app. It should be able to view the historical data captured by the mac helper app which should be synced via iCloud. This is the way forward. ### 3/5 — Mac app is great *2022-06-19* Finally so solid logging for HomeKit. The Mac app does exactly what I want from HomeKit logging. The iOS app as it stands seems extremely limited in usefulness since it has to be open and on screen in order to log events. Please make it so the iOS app can act as a viewer for logs captured by the Mac app (sync via iCloud). Then I can use this for reviewing background logs while not having to sit at my computer.
