## What is Homeschool Planner?

Chalk is a homeschool planner and portfolio for families who teach at home. Plan the week, log the day in one tap, keep the work that shows it, and hand in a numbered portfolio at the end of the year.

YOUR YEAR AS A SUN
Each child has a sun. Every subject is a ray, and each day you log lays chalk on its ray. A dial counts the days or hours your goal asks for, and Chalk tells you how many are left and how many school days a week that takes. In plain words, never in red.

TODAY: ONE TAP FOR THE FAMILY
Today shows each child's plan. Log a child's day in one tap, or the whole family at once with Pro. Untick what you skipped, add minutes per subject, and open, edit or delete any day later. Mark sick days, days off and breaks ahead of time or after.

A PLANNER THAT MOVES WITH YOU
Set up a course from a lesson count or a list of titles and choose the days it meets. Chalk puts each lesson on its next class day. Miss a Tuesday and only the courses that meet on Tuesdays move on. Each course shows the day its last lesson lands.

DAYS, HOURS AND YOUR OWN WEEK
Count days, hours or both, with core hours where your state counts them. Teaching Monday to Thursday, or starting mid-year? Tell Chalk once: it counts your school week, your breaks and the days you taught before you started.

EVIDENCE, FILED BY SUBJECT
Take a photo of a worksheet, scan a test or add a PDF. Each piece is filed by subject and date, next to books, field trips, assessments and report cards.

HAND IT IN
One tap turns the year into a numbered, bookmarked PDF: a cover with your child's sun, contents, a parent statement, attendance with a calendar, hours by subject, the log, the reading list, work samples, field trips, assessments with their attached reports, and report cards. The sections come in an order made for your state, and you choose what goes in.

STATE INFORMATION, WITH SOURCES
For every U.S. state and D.C., Chalk shows a short summary of what the homeschool law asks (days, hours, records, filings), with a link to HSLDA's page for the state, the statute where Chalk read it, and the date it was checked. It is general information, not legal advice: rules depend on the option you use and can change.

YOUR RECORDS STAY YOURS
Chalk syncs through your own iCloud, so the year is on every iPhone and iPad signed in to the same Apple Account. There is no account to create. Export everything, free: CSV files and every photo in one zip, any time.

MORE
Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, a Control Center button, Siri and Shortcuts, share cards of your child's year, an iPad layout with a sidebar, and a dark "slate night" look. Chalk's screens are in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian and Japanese.

FREE AND PRO
Free: a full year for one child, with the planner, one-tap logging, iCloud sync, export, widgets, up to 50 work samples, 20 books and 5 field trips, and a preview of the portfolio with your own numbers.
Chalk Pro: the whole family at one price (every child, log for everyone, the family week), the full portfolio PDF with report cards, the attendance calendar and hours by subject, unlimited evidence, and new assessments with test reports and evaluation letters attached.

Chalk Pro is an auto-renewing subscription, monthly or yearly. The price in your currency is shown in the app before you subscribe. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel it in Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions.

### 5/5 — Needs 1 more thing

*2026-10-29*

Perfect except it needs a way to log amount of hours spent on each subject because I find myself having to keep a separate paper log of daily hours for each subject

### 2/5 — Liked the original, 2.0 jury is still out

*2026-10-26*

Loved how easy the original chalk was to use. 2.0 is a complete mess of chaos at first. I do however, like you can add more than one photo at a time.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.0.1 — 2026-10-29

• Choose the day a lesson was done: "Done on…" is in every lesson menu, and "Change date…" moves a done lesson to another day. On a day already logged, the lesson joins that day.
• Past days in the Planner's Day view now say whether they were logged. A day that was not logged lists the lessons the plan had due that day and offers "Log this day…".
• When a course had not started yet on a day, the day says so, and "Change the start" sets the course's first day from there.
• Tap the date in the Day view to go to any day.
• In the Planner, "Days" is now "Log".
• The portfolio PDF prints long subject and course names, day notes, lesson lists and work sample notes in full, and the contents continue on a second page when needed.
• Edit a course's lessons: rename, delete, reorder, or join a title that was split over two lines.
• Pasted lesson lists come in clean (no page numbers or dot leaders, split titles joined), and you see the titles before the course is saved. "Tidy titles" cleans a course pasted before.
• The week shows each lesson's whole title.
• The portfolio counts only the lessons done and lists skipped lessons apart.
• Email support from Family > Help and about > Email support.

### 2.0.0 — 2026-10-24

Chalk 2.0 is a new Chalk, drawn from its icon. Thank you for teaching with it.

Everything you saved comes with you: every school day, subject, note, work sample, book, excursion, assessment and grade. On the first launch, a short "What's new" shows your counts.

• Four tabs: Today, Planner, Portfolio and Family.
• Today: your child's year as a sun, and one tap to log the day (the whole family at once with Pro).
• Planner: courses and lessons on a real week. Miss a day and only the courses that ran that day move on.
• Portfolio: evidence filed by subject, and Hand it in: a numbered, bookmarked PDF with a parent statement.
• Hours as well as days, your own school week, holidays, and the days you taught before Chalk.
• Sync through your own iCloud, and export everything (CSV files and photos), free.
• Widgets, iPad, and seven languages.

### 1.3.1 — 2026-10-05

This update fixes the portfolio PDF and makes the upgrade screen show the price you would actually pay.

• Days off in the portfolio: each one in the daily log now shows its reason (Holiday, Vacation, Sick Day or Day Off) and your note, instead of "Non-instruction day".
• Long assessment results in the portfolio now wrap onto the next line instead of being cut off at the edge of the page.
• The upgrade screen shows the first-year price only if your Apple Account can still use that offer; otherwise you see the regular yearly price. Every price comes from the App Store in your currency.
• Rate Chalk in Profile now opens the App Store review page.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-09-30

Days off and report cards.

• Holidays, vacations and sick days: mark a day off — or a whole date range in one go — and it shows its reason in your Log. Days off never count toward attendance, and the pace indicator now skips them, so a week away no longer reads as "behind".
• Report cards: add a grade per subject for each term (letters, percents, pass/fail — your convention), then print or share the report card on its own.
• Choose what goes into the portfolio PDF: everything, just the attendance pages, or just the report card.
• The portfolio's attendance summary now lists days off by reason.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-09-08

Start a new school year. Your dashboard, attendance and portfolio now follow the current year, and past years stay one tap away in Profile.
- Work sample grid stays aligned with real photos, and photos are stored smaller.
- Portfolio PDF: full notes for every subject, honest day labels, finished books only, and a dated attendance list.
- Logging the same day twice now opens the existing entry instead of double counting.
- The daily log reminder sends a real notification at the time you choose.
- Prices show in your local currency. Abandoned books are reachable again.
