Fun dialogue, great gameplay, and a really addictive control system. Requires updates *2020-02-17, version 1.70.17* I organically had it however, this new update seems to lose the shotgun and rocket boots buttons so there’s no way to progress past a certain point in the game. Fix this bug and I’d happily review again but until then let purchasers know exactly what they’re getting. ### 1/5 — Can’t believe they are trying to make me subscribe to an app I already bought. *2019-10-03* I bought this app years ago way back when iPod touches were popular. It is probably my favorite mobile game to date. So I was excited when I saw I could get it for iPad. It’s ridiculous to me though that they are trying to make me buy a subscription to an app I already payed for. It would be one thing if I had payed for the app and they made it free. At least then I’d still be supporting the developers. But this is just some greedy company trying to make money off of other people’s work. I could even deal with the ads but they only let you play a few minutes before there is an unskippable pay wall. Hopefully they will let people who have purchased the app get the whole game without subscribing to their stupid service sometime soon. **Developer response:** Everyone who bought this game prior to this update will continue to have full access (with no ads, banners, etc.) without starting a subscription. Unfortunately, we are sometimes unable to automatically detect a previous purchase and need to go through a few steps to verify. Once a purchase is verified, you will no longer see any subscription messaging or ads for GameClub. ### 1/5 — I cant get hookbot *2012-09-18, version 1.60* Put a restore purchases button so i can get hookbot!!!!! ### 1/5 — Emperors New Clothes syndrome *2009-10-19* I'm afraid no amount of retro stylings will make this game appealing to me. The graphics have a modicum of charm but are pretty sloppy really. Even Ghosts and Goblins looked better than this the first time around. I don't really like the controls either. Moing left or right on the ground is context sensitive and as the context keeps changing as you move through the level you find yourself tapping at midair where it was ground level a moment ago, or vice versa. Perhaps theres a deep and exhilerating game if you get good enough to progress past the first level without wanting to throw the game across the room, but I never got that far as I found the game very boring. ### 2/5 — Bugged for iPad still *2020-03-06* I reported a bug on this game a while back and still no update to fix it. And the bug is that none of the power ups are available to use even after upgrading them, can’t keep getting far without the rocket boots or shotgun and etc!!!! **Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback! A new version just went live in the App Store that should resolve this issue. If it doesn't please write us at support@gameclub.io and we will look into it further. Game Center addition would be beyond AMAZING. Would rate 5 stars. ### 2/5 — I don't get it *2010-05-29, version 0* I don't really see why this is so popular. The graphics are very cute, and the controls are simple and well-executed, but the pace is far too slow to carry such shallow, lightweight gameplay. Just dumbly firing off your grappling hook without looking where you're going will get you through lots of levels, and there are almost no in-game hazards other than the clock. If you're looking for a rope-swinging type of game, Mr AahH! is vastly more entertaining and a third of the price. ### 3/5 — Hook Champ *2024-12-24, version 1.70.41* Can not progress on Monkey Island stage 2, the game just keeps crashing about halfway through the stage. iOS 18.whatever is most current as of 12-20-24, iPhone 13. 🤷🏻 Other than that…. It only crashes occasionally…. So it’s not as bad as most other Game Club games at the moment. The controls make sense, the levels have a nice ladder of difficulty, and it’s genuinely fun to play. ### 5/5 — An old favorite, still every bit as good *2021-11-27* I bought Hook Champ many many years ago, possibly on my old 3GS. After several years away from iOS, I came back with the iPhone 13 Pro Max and it’s the first thing I downloaded. I’m happy to report that it is every bit as fun as I remembered it, and still runs beautifully on modern phones. For years, this has been the gold standard that I judge all other mobile games by, and I’m so so so happy to have it back. The grapple-hookin’ is a ton of fun, and the progression is very satisfying. Rocketcat’s follow ups were fantastic too, but nothing beats the original! ### 5/5 — It’s back! *2019-11-03* This game has been sitting on my iPad now for a few years, unable to play. I'm only thankful that Rocketcat hasn't updated to support the iPad natively - I'd never sleep. Update: with native iPad support and 64-bit updates from GameClub, my life is ruined again in the most wonderful way. Buy this! ### 5/5 — iOS 11 killed this game *2017-10-03* I’m pretty sure there will be no update for this game in the future. And with iOS 11, 32-bit app support is gone, rendering this game unplayable unless you roll back to version 10.3 This is one of the greatest paid mobile games ever. Easy to learn, but hard to master and the final levels require true hooking expertise! But alas, there is no sequel, and there is no equal or greater game of this type. I hope the developers decide upon some miracle to update this amazing game, but I know it’s pretty much gone. This era of games (just before micro-transactions became huge) is gone. Sad days.
