### 4/5 — Nice, but missing key features from the website

*2024-09-08*

Would love if the song database was available within the app instead of having to redirect to the browser. Simple web view inside the app with a search bar would do

### 4/5 — Nice book but some audio issue

*2023-03-17*

The audio works fine when first being played. But there’s no sound comes out if wait for some time and play again. I have to restart the app to get the sound to work.

### 3/5 — This is a book , not an app.

*2022-07-25, version 1.1.3*

The content is well written and explains the concepts very well. However, I thought I was purchasing an interactive app and was surprised to see that is was a book.

### 4/5 — Terrific but the screen doesn’t fit

*2020-03-30*

This software is outstanding and intuitive. But the screen of iPad pro 2018 doesn’t fit. Need an update!

### 3/5 — Videos mit playing anymore

*2020-01-24*

Videos are not playing anymore. I used this app about one year ago and everything was fine. Now I updated it and wanted to have a look at it again and now the videos are not playing anymore.
Anyway the content is very good, there were many things I could learn

### 3/5 — graphics won’t play/load

*2019-08-11, version 1.1.3*

idk what’s up, i’m tapping play and nothing seems to happen

### 1/5 — ??

*2019-05-21*

很早在app商店就购买了，如今还要提示重新购买？什么情况

### 3/5 — Can’t play any video

*2019-05-14*

iOS 12.3, iPhone 6s, the videos are not working, please fix it, thanks~

### 2/5 — Unfortunately I’m not very quick at math

*2019-02-23*

Unfortunately I’m not very quick at math. Everything was fine until it introduced the chord numbers correlating to scale degrees. Then it felt like it was hopping, skipping, and jumping away from the pace it started with, in describing everything. Sort of like someone saying ‘This is a ball. Now toss the ball in the air. Neat huh? Now here’s 2 other balls and now toss them into the opposite hands while one is tossed in mid-air, and then repeat the process. Now you’re juggling! Make sense??.” My guitar teacher did this with me too, and I just sat there with my eyes glazed over. Still wasn’t getting it, but he wouldn’t slow down to bridge the pieces. I would have preferred it rest into the concept more thoroughly to emphasize the structure at the pace it started with as it introduced the chord numbers. So... hopefully somehow I’ll learn music theory. Someday. Maybe?

### 1/5 — Cannot play any videos inside

*2019-01-24*

Tried tapping on all the videos in the book and none actually would play... literally just bought the book, this is very frustrating.. :( don’t buy until this bug is fixed.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Great text, nonfunctional app

*2026-04-18*

Purchasing the DLC does not unlock the full content. It spins on “Validating receipt” or some such. Contacting support will get them to unlock the content on their website, but the app remains unusable. This applies to both HookTheory I and II.
The text itself is great, but the app should be pulled from the App Store until it is again functional.

### 1/5 — Online required to read a book

*2024-12-09*

Only reason I bought this was to use it while traveling. But you can’t read the book without internet access. Completely defeats the purpose of a “book”. Which makes this app worthless.

### 1/5 — Cher et non traduit

*2024-09-30*

Ça pourrait être bien si c’était traduit en français ou en d’autres langue. Vu le prix des bouquins et l’IA aujourd’hui qui permet de traduire qualitativement n’importe quel texte. Il semble que ça serait le minimum de propose une traduction

### 1/5 — Misleading Information

*2024-02-18*

Despite the app description stating it was a free download I was immediately charged £14.99 by Apple. I wanted to purchase the package on the web site and use my login on the downloaded app as the description said I could. However it is patently untrue.

So how do I access the website version of this book? I’m not paying twice for it.

### 1/5 — App has issues

*2022-06-01*

Everytime i watch a video in the app, i have to close it and re open it and scroll to my last spot. Absolutely broken.

### 1/5 — Sound doesn’t work

*2022-02-10, version 1.1.3*

All the sounds don’t work they need to fix it

### 1/5 — Book, not the app

*2022-01-29, version 1.1.3*

This is not the music making app but a very expensive book explaining how to use the app.

### 1/5 — App doesn’t work properly.

*2020-04-14, version 1.1.3*

None of the videos work for this tutorial. Waste of money. I am using the latest iPhone and update.. still nothing. Smh.

### 1/5 — Deceptive

*2020-04-14*

This is basically a $25 book with nice images and some videos. It is composed of 20 chapters of 2 pages (1 if you remove images) , that is high price for a book.

Content is not maintained for the last 3 years, keeping typos in the little text it contains.

The author takes shortcuts in the theory to an end goal that basically give the student the impression of understanding music without having to know the why, being able to play with chords, but this is very short term.

### 1/5 — Videos don’t play

*2019-12-16, version 1.1.3*

Clicking the play button on the video never worked.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Helpful examples with audio, tons of charts and diagrams

*2026-05-14*

The interactive charts showing toggleable chord tones is the most insanely helpful thing I’ve ever seen. If I could give any feedback on room for improvement, the yellow and green are pretty similar in color tone, so they’re difficult for me to distinguish with even my mild red-green colorblindness. I would recommend darkening the green a touch to bring it closer to like a Forrest green [to remove some of the yellow tones from the green]. This wouldn’t change anything in the content of the lessons, simply make it easier for us who have visual impairments to distinguish between the colors. Incredible information presented in a brilliant way. Thank yall for making this

### 5/5 — Mind-blowing

*2025-02-09, version 2.3.0*

I have been working to understand music theory ever since I started studying the guitar two years ago, and the piano one year ago. I have read five different books on music theory, as well as watched about 15 to 20 different YouTube videos on the topic. For almost all of those the vocabulary was so dense and abstract that it was incredibly difficult to Comprehend how I could apply when I was learning. This book was absolutely mind blowing. I loved the way it was organized, the examples, and its use of popular songs. The visualizations were incredibly helpful and have completely changed my understanding of music and what music theory has been trying to communicate all along. This book has finally given me the missing clues to begin creating and composing my own music. Thank you so much!

### 5/5 — Game changer

*2024-11-12*

For the first time ever, music theory clicked. Thank you!

### 5/5 — Sehr gut.

*2024-04-06*

Ich habe jetzt Hooktheory 1 durch. Und werde gleich mit dem 2. Teil starten.

### 5/5 — The future of didactic books!

*2023-12-27*

This was extremely well thought out. Not only from the information presented, but how it is presented. Small amounts of information just enough to digest then review.
The format is excellent, the color coding, interaction etc.
Highly recommend. I’ll be going over this a few times and then moving on to book 2.

### 5/5 — Totally 5 Stars! Get it!

*2021-08-08*

Alright, so it’s for beginners. I’m no beginner but I have never seen practical how-to songwriting content laid out so concisely and accurately. If you’re just starting out trying to write songs and figure out chords, this could almost suffice as the one reference you need to understand what you are doing. Excellent work, thanks to the authors! And after you get this one, then move to HookTheory II where the fun continues!

### 5/5 — Get it

*2021-08-06*

Get it now !!!

### 5/5 — Wow ! never invested my money better !

*2021-01-02*

If you want to learn music theory in a great and simple way, this is the best buy you can make. I have a lot of books about it but this is the best !

### 5/5 — Found a spelling mistake

*2020-07-14*

Chapter 3.3
“…notes on weak beats are less prominant.”
in which “prominant” should be “prominent”

Just reporting a spelling mistake. The book itself is fascinating! Great job!

### 5/5 — Kaufen!

*2019-02-21*
