### 3/5 — Tips work

*2019-01-13, version 1.4*

I don't see what all the bad reviews are about

### 3/5 — Sound Effects

*2018-11-16*

Can’t seem to find a way to turn them off.

**Developer response:** Thanks for supporting us by purchasing How To Draw! Sound Effects can indeed be disabled.

To turn them off press the "i" button on the main menu in front of the words "portrait tutorials".

That will bring up an info menu with 3 sections you can chose from on the bottom. Select "settings" and you'll be brought to a page of preferences including the option to turn off "Interface Sounds".

### 3/5 — It's okay - no Apple Pencil support

*2017-06-24*

I thought you could draw with the Apple Pencil and follow along with the illustrations from the app. It still a good resource on learning to draw. Not a deal breaker for the price.

### 3/5 — Just bought it

*2014-08-04*

I just got this app and I will keep it if you can get more tutorial on here. I would be so thankful. I hope you read this It will make me so happy

### 1/5 — Not worth it

*2014-07-15, version 1.2*

I feel like there should be more tutorials than just four considering it was 2.00. I'm disappointed.

### 1/5 — Not worth a dime. Not worth a star.

*2014-03-01, version 1.2*

I made a $2.00 mistake.
Don't get this app.

It's basically just 4 slideshows with 11 screenshots/photos each. Just 2 female and 2 male headshot portraits. No more.

Very disappointed.
I want my money back geez!

### 1/5 — Does not work

*2013-10-29, version 1.1*

Tips do not work at all. Just get a blank screen. App is useless. I want my money back.

### 1/5 — Don't download

*2013-10-20, version 1.1*

This app is a con. It says over 3 dozen tips per tutorial but the tip box comes up blank every time so 0 tips. Then it says it will show you how to drawer faces from multiple angles. Well no all four yes I said four that is all you get. These are all front shots so no angles there. That's all you get so all in all a big con. I want my money back !'n

### 1/5 — Negative Press

*2013-06-25*

I am the negative press, and I'm here. This app is monotoned, impractical, and hollow. As incredibly redundant as this app is, it took me no more than 3 minutes to realize that there was absolutely no depth to it and serves no real purpose but to cheat a customer out of their money by using a seemingly trustworthy name. News flash- wise consumers read reviews. One question for you sir- who the hell is Matt Busch, and why would any single person trust him? "Artist Matt Busch."

### 4/5 — Simple to use; easy to apply.

*2013-03-07*

This app is simple to use, easy to understand and filled with great tips. It can be applied to a wide range of different portraits. I have never been formally taught how to draw so I found the tips very helpful.

### 3/5 — Only 4 portraits?

*2013-03-06, version 1.1*

I thought it said more then 3 dozen portraits! Please add more portraits! But other then that I have improved ALOT in real life drawings.

### 1/5 — Terrible. You learn nothing . Please do not buy. I want my money back. I demands a refund, now!

*2012-12-27*

Terrible. You learn nothing. Hard to use. Missing features. Do not buy. I demand my money back. I want a refund now on this and sketchbook app also, now. You thieves. I will get you some negative press if I don't get my money back!

### 1/5 — Exactly

*2012-11-28, version 1.1*

Exactly what you said nothing you can't get for free.
Even worse

### 2/5 — Disappointed

*2012-11-13, version 1.1*

It's only 4 portraits and isn't as great as the description leads you to believe. Nothing I can't find for free. Save your money.

### 2/5 — Learn to draw

*2012-09-25, version 1.1*

Not what I thought

### 1/5 — Did I really fall for this?

*2012-09-05*

I am such an idiot. I thought by reading the reviews that it would be safe and it's okay to purchase this app. What a colossal waste of my money. Four different faces, with steps like flipping through a very short book. You can't even practice in the app, you have to leave the app, open your own sketching software and then try to remember what you just saw in the book you looked at. I am better off looking at the information on the Internet. It is as basic as it could get. I can only imagine that the positive reviews must be left by company employees to make a sale and it sent me worked in my case.
Since I already wasted my money, I am trying to at least prevent another person to make the same mistake as I have.
Save your money look up information on the Internet for free!

PS: if you happen to own iBooks author where you can create iPad books, you will be able to exactly duplicate this app and most likely come up with a better version.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Very disappointing

*2019-05-10, version 1.5*

I have just purchased this app..not what I expected .. no tips as promised.. I would like a refund..this is not a proper tutorial..there does not seem to be any contact information other than reviews.. refund required ..

### 1/5 — Do not get this app!

*2019-03-10*

Caution, if you want this app, be prepared to waste $1.99 on 4 tutorials on how to draw faces. Each consists of usually around 11 steps, and that’s the entire app. I sadly did not look at the rating given and spent this money. I was hoping for a good app to learn how to draw. It turned out that it does neither of those things. To even be worth money it should have more than 4 tutorials. The worst part is that the tutorials are so uninspired. They’re just “Female portrait”, “Male portrait”, and their 3/4 counterparts. Don’t get this app. This garbage shouldn’t be $2 and it should be refunded.

Edit: I read some other reviews and learned that they’ve been the EXACT same complaints for 6 YEARS!

### 1/5 — Embarrassed that I bought this

*2019-01-14*

Not interactive and almost no actual content. Shame on me for not reading reviews and checking beforehand. Astounding that someone would charge 1.99 for this. It’s not work that...

### 1/5 — This app is not worth it!!!!

*2018-12-20*

I think that this app is not worth two dollars. I think this because it does not state the specific needs to be able to draw a portrait. This app is a rip off!! I would most certainly not recommend this app!! The people who have made this app I want to let you know that I am very upset that I paid two dollars for a piece of crap app! If you could please give me a refund it would be Very appreciated!!!

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2017-11-29*

Not interactive as led to believe. While it’s good information it’s more of an ebook with a painful interface rather than a drawing tutorial app.

### 1/5 — Not enough choices

*2017-11-29*

How can only 4 drawings cost $1.99 USD...what am I missing?

### 1/5 — Useless App

*2017-09-22*

You cannot even practice in the app, its just a bunch slides with a few steps to draw 4 fixed faces. I cant believe they featured it in the Appstore

### 1/5 — THIS IS RIDICULOUS ! DONT BUY THIS APP

*2015-02-01, version 1.2*

This is just a guideline. This is not interactive. You have to draw with a paper and pen. RIDICULOUS!!!

### 1/5 — Crappy

*2014-12-15, version 1.2*

Waste of $2 don't get it

### 1/5 — DONT DOWNLOAD

*2014-12-03*

I thought this app would be really helpful in teaching me how to draw realistic people. For starters, there's only 4 pictures to draw, 2 female, 2 male. Secondly, they don't tell you how to do it. They'll say something along the lines of "now draw the eye" but they won't tell you how to do it or specific shading or other details. Finally, it was just confusing. I found myself getting lost VERY OFTEN because it didn't go very simple step by step. This app is a horrible waste of $2

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — The right tools for learning portraits

*2025-08-21*

I can draw but was curious about the App.
For anyone trying to get the right balance in drawing a face, this is excellent!! It gives you a step-by-step guideline, direction.
After you have done the four angles for the images given, you can always get a photo you like looking in the same direction as one of the examples and try the process. You will surprise yourself!

### 5/5 — Only 4 tutorials, but the tips are v informative and useful

*2025-06-23, version 1.6*

I’ve just used it to do my first portrait and it seems like I’ll be able to use and adapt the tips to different faces as I learn and develop my skills. I personally recommend the simple clear step by step instructions.

### 5/5 — Great Tuts!

*2015-07-08, version 1.2*

I just followed 2 of these tutorials and the results are great! An excellent resource!

### 5/5 — Great and useful!!!

*2014-02-27*

Great app for beginners or a refresher course for those who've taken a break from the art world. Matt Busch's app is awesome.

### 5/5 — :)

*2012-09-02*

I'm just speechless.... Just one thing: Extremely Helpful!!!!!!!

### 5/5 — wooow!!!:)

*2012-06-01*

This aplication explains very awesome part by part and it gives you hints!

### 5/5 — Rock solid drawing instruction

*2012-05-25*

I had picked this app up on a whim, thought it looked neat and I've alway been a fan of Matt Busch's artwork. Yesterday I found myself in a coffee shop and my girlfriend was running late. I remembered that I'd downloaded this and started drawing while I was waiting and it was the best stuff I've ever drawn. It was really cool!

### 5/5 — Like a book but better

*2012-05-20*

Solid content and a fun interface. 4 lessons, each with 11 steps and several tips per step. Reminds me of those how to draw books I had when I was growing up, only you can zoom in to see more detail. The tips are cool too - kind of like getting a mini personal lesson from the artist. Recommend.

### 5/5 — Sweet how-to-draw app!

*2012-05-14*

This is the best how-to-draw app I've found so far! It has very detailed drawing tips from a professional artist. This app is useful for people just learning to draw as well as more experienced artists.

The real deal- no sloppy cartoons in this app!

### 5/5 — So great!

*2012-05-11*

What a great app! This certainly will teach you more about drawing the human head than any book will. Plus- it's on your iPhone so you can take it with you and learn more any time or any where. And it's cool that it's taught by Matt Busch- he's a guy that draws for Star Wars and a bunch of other Hollywood stuff- who better to learn from? I definitely recommend this.
