### 3/5 — Found on the web, app is alright

*2025-07-30, version 11.5*

Hey, rather than a app, it would be more functional and useful to have this as an extension or script that appears in the options menus for the bowers, and for the long press on selected text.

It’s just silly to have open an app or website. When, I really should be able to highlight/select the word and either/both long press and have “pronounce” as an option, like “look up”, “search the web”, etc.

And/or, the browser menu that contains “pronounce/howjsay” as an option, such as, print, look up, etc., is an option.

### 4/5 — Null

*2024-12-22, version 11.5*

Can you add definitions or option for note editing? Also a report button for unfound words might help.

### 4/5 — Not great; not useless either

*2024-03-10, version 11.5*

The pronunciations are correct and the words available fairly comprehensive, but the audio quality is very poor. It's like they got a competent person to record the words, but used the cheapest, tinniest tape recorder from radio shack to record the words with. What a shame; if the audio quality were even half way decent this could be five stars.

### 2/5 — Yearly subscription even though app was purchased prevously.

*2023-12-12, version 11.5*

I paid for access to this app but now it seems that they have moved to a yearly subscription. If you have customers who paid for the app when it was a single payment for access, they should be grandfathered into access to the app. I was a loyal customer but I am not going to keep paying you. Very bad business practice!

### 2/5 — Version gratuite très restreinte

*2023-08-29*

Les mots dont j’ai besoin ne sont pas inclus dans la version gratuite

### 3/5 — Premium

*2023-05-16, version 11.4*

I paid for premium but it keeps asking me to get premium. Then it accepts I have it but there is a problem with the Apple ap store. Very frustrating as so many words are hidden from me.
I am now being told there is an increase in price. Perhaps the best thing is to cancel my subscription. That’s a shame as I like the app.

### 4/5 — Howjsay

### 5/5 — Best help Ever

*2023-01-25, version 11.4*

I use this app often! Very helpful even in everyday life!

### 5/5 — The best!

*2023-01-17*

Howjsay is the best app for English pronunciation I,ve ever found.

### 4/5 — IPA transcription

*2023-01-16, version 11.4*

all is fine except missing IPA transcription

### 5/5 — Invaluable app

*2022-11-09, version 11.3*

This app has been so useful, I’ve been using it for years. Clear precise pronunciation, enunciated by a real person, no synthetic voices. If a word has multiple pronunciations, for instance American and British, you hear both. Worth every penny of its modest price!

### 2/5 — I now use Google pronounce and it works great too - and it’s free!!

*2022-09-07, version 11.3*

It used to be great, but now they’re charging money, I use Google pronounce and it works great too - and it’s free!!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Dissatisfied

*2026-03-05, version 11.5*

First word I type in it has no idea how to pronounce and says it can’t find it. Totally disappointed

### 1/5 — Add it to the pile

*2025-01-18, version 11.5*

I understand that app devs also need a way to make money, and I can’t fault them for that. I won’t be spiteful because to be fair, their prices aren’t terrible in the scheme of things. However, I will say I think that anyone that makes a subscription the only option to get consistent or basic functionality from their app is alienating at least half of their user-base. I have to ask, since it really does seem like no app developer realizes this, but you do understand that if nearly every single app on the market wants to charge a subscription fee, the average middle or lower class person can’t have 20 subscriptions to every single random app, right? On top of that, having to manage a bunch of random reoccurring charges is honestly a little tiring to keep track of. I really think that this would do better with a one time fee for the words you guys have decided to make premium only, even if it’s a bit more than the subscription price is now.
Edit to add, like others have said, there are dozens of free options that serve the same purpose. Some mention google, but dictionary.com or merriam-webster also work fine. If you’re determined to hear the most natural sounding pronunciation, you can ask chatgpt (for free). I have yet to hear any unnatural pronunciations despite the dev’s denouncement of ai pronunciation in response to another review.

### 1/5 — Extremely slow to add words

*2024-02-19, version 11.5*

I have to ask repeatedly for words to be added. It’s very annoying. The app develops are not responsive

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2023-08-30, version 11.5*

I originally paid for this app, I’m extremely disappointed that all of sudden, they’ve decided to charge a yearly subscription.
I feel like it’s a scam!!!

### 1/5 — The App is not being updated?

*2022-10-01, version 11.3*

I paid for Unlimited Access but cannot use it to get it to play the pronunciation.

### 1/5 — A disgrace

*2022-09-22, version 11.3*

I’ve bought this app a few years ago,but now Im not allowed to use it any more as it says I’ve to pay annually for it.It’s very tricky to steal people’s money who already had paid for it before the annually membership.

### 1/5 — Gone

*2022-09-18, version 11.3*

I’m outta here. This was great app for a long time but now every time I try to look up a word it just so happens it’s not a “free word” and they want money. There’s too many places that I can do this for free.

### 1/5 — The bad

*2022-07-03, version 11.3*

When i buy you first..you are didn’t tell me when you upgrade my word not free …i buy it for life time ..it will be free all the time on feature.why not write other app for subscribe ..,

### 1/5 — Thieves

*2022-05-08, version 11.3*

I paid for a one-off lifetime ownership few years back, now, without previous warning the greedy cowboys want to milk the cow by charging monthly fees to everyone

### 1/5 — It doesn’t work

*2020-10-10*

Error while downloading Words.

**Developer response:** Hi Fabrice. There was a temporary server issue which has now been resolved. Please contact support if you're having any issues.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Accent

*2026-01-23, version 11.5*

Though I like the app a great deal, why does the translator have an accent? I haven’t used the app lately, but, today I did and was surprised to hear an Italian accent.
Where on the app can I change it to plain English.

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2025-07-25, version 11.5*

This app has given me very much pleasure over the years. I am not good with phonics , therefore I rely on this app. Thank you.

### 5/5 — Simply love the app!!

*2024-03-07, version 11.5*

### 5/5 — Superb!

*2024-03-03, version 11.5*

I’ve never written a review for an app before, but I had to on this occasion! Effective, unquestionably accurate and entirely fit-for-purpose! For such a small annual fee this app is worth every penny! Mind blowing when you consider the preparation and time that’s gone into its preparation and development! The first app I downloaded provided totally inaccurate results - AI generated rubbish! What a pleasant surprise!

### 5/5 — Learning to Read

*2024-01-19, version 11.5*

Growing up I didn’t learn to read by embracing phonics. For me, words themselves were intricate pictures with audible names I remembered by their overall appearance. I was 70 years old before I realized why I had no idea how others could pronounce words they had never heard spoken before or spell words they had never seen. This app has been a tremendous help to me in my ongoing process of learning to apply phonics to my speech and writing endeavors.

Can’t get along without it.

### 5/5 — Great

Excellent pronouncing and useful on go. The subject covered is also excellent. Now google dictionary is icing on the cake.
