I like that I can quiz myself or just work on vocabulary. I definitely plan on purchasing the whole pack because it is so useful. One thing I think would make the app much better is the ability to highlight in the lessons. I love colour coating, so having some different coloured highlighter options in the app would make understanding it so much easier. How about a highlight feature that saves highlighted text by lesson number? That would help a lot. There are times I encounter vital information to areas I have difficulty with, and I would love to easily refer back to it without having to scroll through the whole lesson. Other than this at the moment, the app is amazing. Thanks for being so meticulous and in-depth with your teaching. I had been using the website to help me with my Duolingo journey (because that app doesn’t teach crap) for a while before I discovered that it was a mobile app. Let me tell you, I haven’t had it long but I’m so glad I downloaded it! It’s kind of a lot of information, but it’s explained so well and it has filled so many of my knowledge gaps. The developer is amazing. Their structure of each lesson and grammatical explanations is literally the best and just MAKES SENSE! Perfectly to the point! Also having audio files for every single vocab word and most sentences is extremely helpful. I was so excited to hear about this app coming out and it did not disappoint!! If you are trying to learn korean, their website and app are the best!! 💖 **Developer response:** Thank you! ### 5/5 — Best App, Best Site, Best Staff *2023-07-02* I have never left a written review before, but I am hoping that this is as comprehensive as any prospective Korean student could want. So, feel free to move between the sections if you don’t care to mull over the pomp and frill of what I intend to be a most sincere and well-deserved ‘thank you’ to this app, its parent website, and its creators. The website alone is fantastic and, unless you are unwilling to delete any of the other useless applications on your phone, you should also consider giving this app a download. Its user interface might not be as flashy as Duolingo’s, but what it lacks in ornamentation it more than makes up for in overall quality. VOCABULARY I did the math, and it's staggering for most language programs. I don’t mean to take pot-shots at any other services, so I’ll just say that offering over 5,000 words in the free lessons alone should be mind-boggling to any eager onlookers. For reference, you could read 95 to 98 percent of this post with roughly the 5,000 most common English words — which, in my mind, would prove fairly fluent by any reasonable standard. While other apps might be solely dedicated to vocabulary, I’d like to disagree with most of the online language learning community and chide any would-be critics for claiming that a diversity of language learning apps is always a net positive. Lots of apps equal lots of cash, and so while you could have a $60 dollar subscription to Memrise, and a paid Quizlet account, and also pay for Drops, I just don’t see why you would want to do that. Here, they provide all the resources, either in this app or on the website, for you to effectively memorize thousands of vocabulary terms. GRAMMAR I don’t even know what to say here. The whole of the online Korean learning community drops off at about A2 — which is a European standard for measuring fluency, and it is basically equivalent to a less-than-elementary level of education. This site and app are different. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re approaching C1, or near-native fluency, by their newest, and growing, number of lessons. That is a staggering achievement for one relatively small site to have taken on and beaten. Even if you don’t care to learn Korean that extensively, you have to respect their hustle. Unless you want to read overly wordy and needlessly complicated academic textbooks, this service is your best bet! PRONUNCIATION They literally pronounce everything for you in audio files… Like, what? If you don’t like listening to an automated message reading something that sounds like it's from the year 2655, give these folks a try. The pronunciations are measured and kind on the ears from real people who care about Korea, Korean, and a world that is increasingly interested in those two things! DEVELOPERS Will is great, and his team clearly knows how to make a fantastic online service. What can I say? He has responded to every one of my emails about Korean and the site’s premium services within a few minutes. That’s not standard, that’s stupendous. However, the How to Study Korean app actually offers so much more than the website. It tracks your statistics and has entertaining ways to practice Korean. In my opinion, this app is way better than even Duolingo and other popular language apps. (for self-evaluation mode) When the prompt is audio and the answer is in korean, there's no option to play the korean audio. If i want to learn how a new word is pronounced, I have to go back to the lesson and scroll around to find it. It happens too when the prompt is in korean, there's no option to play the audio of it in korean. Also I'm not sure but I don't think it does spaced repetition? between sessions anyway. Also my stats seem to reset whenever I change the settings. I love everything about it from practicing and the reading they provide which explains everything you need to know about Korean in an understandable way. Much better than any app out there I can’t praise it enough ### 5/5 — Thorough and detailed *2026-05-02* First of all, I appreciate that the teacher doesn’t get the reader bogged down in grammatical concepts like “first person present subjunctive” and instead uses plain well-written English with plenty of examples. It’s very easy to follow and refreshing to read. I love all the vocabulary and the spoken audio and I will say that the sample sentences are the icing on the cake, because they put the vocabulary and lesson contents to precise use. It’s an absolute goldmine of information and well worth the price. ### 5/5 — I finally found the all-in-one app that will get me to Korean fluency. *2026-03-28* Best Korean learning app. As an English teacher learning to better help my Korean students, this is by far the most intuitive app for those who want a comprehensive all in one resource and companion to your learning. Most language learning apps have a gimmick or gamified structure which helps for motivation and consistency, but as you progress, I find those apps become less effective because the format sometimes outperforms meaningful language retention. Particularly, after learning basic grammar and vocabulary, the main challenge to speaking conversationally is being able to creating strings of coherent sentences, so HTSK gives many examples to allow you to apply what you’ve learned WITH new vocabulary and it has all the QOL things you need for flash cards, super relevant stats, creating your own lists etc. It’s definitely better suited for those who mainly need a great resource with explanations, examples and non-nonsense drill tools. You can pair it really well with other apps with more emphasis on guided learning. I love how they build this system for us to learn Korean ### 5/5 — Slow but worth it *2025-11-14* I’ve had this app for 2 months and have been loving it so far. I do an hour per day. It starts with 한글 and grammar which is detailed and accurate. It doesn’t have as many exercises as other apps but that’s ok because you still learn a lot. You don’t really start learning WORDS and how to have conversations until later lessons so I recommend complimenting this with an app like memrise or lingodeer. I love this app because it sets things clear and helps you learn how to read even if you don’t understand yet. Slow and steady wins the race. Spend a while on this and become a pro. It has real people writing everything and speaking in the audios you hear which is the best part! ### 5/5 — My favorite learning app *2025-09-20* Hands down my favorite learning app! Powerful functionality built into the app. Love the options for learning vocab. Different modes for quizzing oneself to learn/retain vocab. Great explanation of the nuances of the language. Still have many lessons to go but very excited to see the recent addition of hanja lessons. I wish apps for other languages were modeled on this one. Congratulations on creating this amazing app. I hope you can support it for a long time to come. I started learning Korean and I ran into a problem I think is quite common, finding a course or program to teach me Korean was overwhelming and expensive. Many of the courses I came across had massive prices and less structured lessons and more just vocabulary practice. Then I found Howtostudykorean and knew right away. This app has fantastic content with everything you need to know about all aspects of the Korean language-vocabulary sentence structure, grammar, pronunciation tips, writing, reading, EVERYTHING. What I love about this is that it’s all in one so instead of paying for 3 different apps and creating your own program, you can get all content on this app for very cheap in comparison to any competitor.
