## What is Huck?

Idaho's trails, offline. All of them.

Huck stores every trail, forest road, and contour line in Idaho directly
on your phone. No signal, no data plan, no "downloading map…" spinner at
the trailhead. Airplane mode, dead zones, deep canyons — the map just
works.

EVERY TRAIL, FROM THE AGENCIES THAT MAINTAIN THEM
Trail data comes from the US Forest Service, Idaho Parks & Recreation,
and the Bureau of Land Management — merged, de-duplicated, and kept
current. Trail numbers, surface, difficulty, elevation profiles, and
which uses are allowed: hike, horse, bike, moto, ATV.

BUILT FOR WHERE THERE IS NO SERVICE
• Full offline vector maps with hillshaded terrain
• Turn-by-turn driving directions to trailheads over forest roads
• Record your track, then see distance, time, and pace
• Drop and share waypoints
• Search every trail by name or number, instantly

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Seasonal open and close dates, so you don't drive two hours to a gate.
Live weather at the trailhead when you have a connection, saved for when
you don't.

HUCK+
Hunt unit boundaries (GMUs), controlled hunt draw areas by species, and
satellite imagery for the regions you've downloaded.

YOUR LOCATION STAYS YOURS
Huck has no account and no login. Your position and recorded tracks never
leave your phone — we can't see them, because they're never sent
anywhere.

Idaho Panhandle is included with the app. Five more regions download free
when you want them.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.5.1 — 2026-09-30

The closure layer is free. Switch on Closures & restrictions, first in Map layers, and the closures and area restrictions are drawn across the map at once, for planning before you go. Tap one for the order, its dates, the district and a phone number where the agency lists one. It used to come with Huck+.

Trail season dates are free too. A seasonal trail's card shows when each season opens and closes, and whether it is open now. Where there are no dates, it says who to check with.

Campgrounds, fire lookouts, guard stations and rental cabins are on the map, with Huck+: Forest Service sites in Idaho, and BLM's developed campgrounds and cabins. Tap one for the fee, water, toilets and season as the agency lists them, and a button to check dates on Recreation.gov where it lists the place. Take me there routes the drive in.

Search finds places. Up to five come up above the trails as you type; pick one and the map flies there with its card open. Or tap a chip under Find (Fire lookouts, Cabins, Campgrounds, Trailheads, OHV areas) to see only that kind around you, with a list nearest first. Fire lookouts are the towers themselves; guard stations and rental cabins are under Cabins. Trailheads, info sites and OHV areas are free; campgrounds, lookouts and cabins come with Huck+.

Wildlife management areas, with Huck+: the ground Idaho Fish and Game manages for wildlife, outlined and named on the map, with its own switch in Map layers. Boundaries and names, not each area's rules.

A strip of the map no longer goes blank. After a zoom or a camera move, one band across it could lose its land, trails and roads while the labels kept drawing. The map renderer inside Huck now carries the fix.

Saved trails open the right trail. Some trail numbers are used in two regions, and a favorite, a recent or a route could open the other region's trail. Favorites, recents, routes and trip plans saved from now on remember their region, and everything you saved before this update is still there.

A trip plan's link names the trail it was made for, not another region's trail with the same number, and its preview shows that trail's own picture.

Fresh statewide data: trails, roads, closures, fire restrictions, hunt boundaries and points of interest, rebuilt this week.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-09-18

An updated region draws again straight away. Downloading new data for a region used to leave the map with no trail or road lines at all — the land, the hillshade, the trail markers and the search all still there, the lines gone — until you quit Huck and opened it again. The map server inside the app was still reading the pack files it had open, which the download had just replaced underneath it. It lets go of them now. The lines blink once while the new tiles load, and then they are there.

The statewide layers update over the air. Land ownership, pack coverage and the motor-vehicle layers — including the route database that answers which forest roads are open to which vehicles — now arrive on their own, so a corrected road designation reaches your phone without waiting for an app update. Map areas carries a row called Statewide map layers, and a badge when there is something new. About 24 MB for the set, over Wi-Fi unless you say otherwise.

Huck checks those four files before it trusts them. Each has to match the SHA-256 hash published with it, and then open and answer a query, or it is refused and the copy already on your phone is kept.

Fresh statewide data: trails, roads, closures, fire restrictions, hunt boundaries and points of interest, rebuilt this week.

### 1.4.5 — 2026-09-15

Slope-angle bands, for Huck+. The map now shades terrain by steepness in five bands, from 27 degrees to 50 and above, on the thresholds avalanche forecasters use. It is computed in true ground metres rather than on the flattened map, so 35 degrees means 35 degrees. Offline, like everything else.

Starting a trail asks how you are travelling. Hike, snowshoe, ski, horse, bike, ATV, moto, 4x4 or snowmobile. The time estimate, whether you see pace or speed, whether the MVUM opens that road to you, and what your trip plan tells the person waiting at home all follow from the answer. It never blocks: a mode is already chosen, and Start is one tap away.

Aspect shading reads true steepness now. The wash that deepens as ground gets steeper was measuring that steepness on a flattened map, which understates it badly this far north. Rebuilt for the whole state.

### 1.4.3 — 2026-09-11

Bug fixes
"Take me there" avoids closed roads and trails now

### 1.4.2 — 2026-09-03

Send a plan from the trail you are looking at. Every trail, route and waypoint card now has a Send plan button. It sends the same card you get when you share a trail, with a message written for the person receiving it: where you are going, when to expect you back, and what to do if they have not heard from you — call the county sheriff for that area, who runs search and rescue in Idaho. Tools shows the plan you have out, so you can check in or send a fresh one.

A waypoint now carries a link. Share a pin and the other person gets a page with the coordinates and buttons for Apple Maps and Google Maps. If they have Huck, the link opens the pin in it.

Which way is that ridge. Tap the compass button on any waypoint and the ribbon shows its bearing and distance, with a sight line pointing at it. Answers the question hunters ask out loud.

A tape measure. Tools has Measure: tap points on the map for a running distance, close the shape for acres or square miles.

Trail names on the map. At the zoom where trails are markers, their names now sit beside them, thinning out as they collide, so you can read a valley without tapping every dot.

No motors. The filters have a No motors chip that hides every trail open to any motor vehicle. And where the Forest Service's trail tags disagree with its own motor vehicle use map, the map now wins — it is the one a ranger enforces.

Your pins and tracks, out and in. Share all your waypoints as one GPX or KML file, share a recorded track as either, and open a GPX from another app to see it on your map.

The hunt scope tidies up after itself. Turning it off now turns off both hunt layers, instead of leaving them on the map for you to find.

Fresh statewide data, rebuilt this month: trails, roads, closures, fire restrictions, hunt boundaries and points of interest.
