## What is Hunchboard?

Hunchboard is a thinking tool for Connections–style word puzzles. It makes the invisible visible: when a tile feels like it could belong to two different groups, Hunchboard lets you see and explore those overlapping hunches instead of forcing a single guess.

THE PROBLEM
In a 4x4 puzzle grid, each tile sits in one spot. But your brain doesn't work that way — you know "BALL" could be a dance OR a round object. The standard grid can't show that. You're stuck holding it all in your head.

HOW HUNCHBOARD HELPS
- Drag tiles together to start guessing a group
- A tile can belong to multiple groups at once
- Switch between Row view (a 4-row layout that mirrors a solved Connections grid) and Group view (a free-form canvas with overlapping colored shapes)
- Group view makes your overlapping hunches visible and sortable

LOOK IT UP WITHOUT LEAVING THE APP
- Drag a tile onto Wiktionary for a quick definition
- Drag onto Wikipedia for a one-paragraph article summary (great for proper nouns)
- Drag onto Web search if you need a general result
- Lookups are lazy — only the word you drag, only when you drag it

COLLABORATE WITH FRIENDS
- Create a group session with a 6-character invite code — no accounts
- Each person works at their own pace and shares when ready
- See how your hunches compare and converge
- Sessions auto-delete after 14 days

WORKS WITH ANY PUZZLE
- Import a screenshot of any Connections-style grid and let on-device OCR read the tiles
- Or type tiles in manually
- All OCR happens on your device — your screenshot is never uploaded

BUILT FOR THINKING
- Auto-arrange your hypotheses into rows with one tap (Untangle)
- Color a row to commit to a guess
- A daily "Today's daily puzzle" shortcut from the home screen
- A friendly first-time experience that unlocks the full app as you practice the basics
- Optimized for iPhone and iPad

FREE TO TRY
- 20 starting puzzle credits to fully explore the app
- After that, Puzzle Packs at $0.99 USD per pack — no subscription, no ads
- Each pack grants additional credits (the exact count is shown before you confirm)

Hunchboard doesn't connect to any puzzle service or API. Your puzzle data stays on your device. Group sessions are temporary and auto-delete after 14 days.

### 5/5 — Life-changing!

*2026-05-25*

I routinely do the NY Times connections puzzle and this app makes it twice as fun by letting you physically group (or color-code) words so you can physically see them together. It takes away the need to remember which words go together because you can see them right there grouped together. That way you can focus on the fun parts - figuring out which words go together and what the connections among them are. Once you’ve grouped them you can even assign them purple, blue, green, and yellow so you can guess what order is the reverse rainbow. Highly recommend for anyone who plays connections!

### 5/5 — Amazing!

I play the NYT Connections puzzle *every day* and this will save me SO MUCH time!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2.2 — 2026-08-14

Bug fixes and improvements.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-08-12

What's new in Hunchboard 1.2.1:
• Big-text layouts fixed — if you use larger text sizes, the solving screen now lays out properly. The bottom controls no longer cover the last row of tiles, and the wordmark scales to fit instead of clipping.
• Undo restores the whole move — undoing after a recolor now puts the color back on the shape it came from, along with everything else that move changed.
• Picture tiles look right — tiles made from images fill their circle cleanly and carry Hunchboard's background instead of the source picture's. Dragging them onto Wiktionary or web search works in Group view now, too.
• A smoother switch between views — going from Row view to Group view is continuous: no blank first frame, and every tile lands where it belongs.
• Tappable badges — dismiss badges in Group view no longer hide underneath neighboring shapes.
• Steadier grouping — the tangle score no longer depends on the order tiles happen to be in, and merging at the group limit no longer makes an oversized group.
• Your credit balance refreshes more reliably after a purchase.

Still free with 20 puzzle credits to start. Puzzle Packs $0.99. No subscription, no ads, no accounts.

### 1.2 — 2026-06-12

What's new in Hunchboard 1.2:
• Send a puzzle straight to Hunchboard — spot a Connections grid in Safari, Photos, or any app with a Share button? Share it to Hunchboard and it's ready to solve. No more save-the-screenshot-then-import dance.
• Smoother group sessions — the collaborate screen is cleaner, there's a "Copy session code" option so you can hand a friend just the 6-character code, and leaving a session works reliably again.
• Red herrings, behaving — when you recolor a group, its red-herring fish now stays with the right group instead of occasionally hopping to the wrong tiles. And a group that's over-connected across all four colors now gets a playful rainbow-striped fish.
• Accessibility and polish — clearer labels for screen-reader users, plus assorted layout and reliability fixes.

Still free with 20 puzzle credits to start. Puzzle Packs $0.99. No subscription, no ads, no accounts.

### 1.1 — 2026-06-06

What's new in Hunchboard 1.1:
• Spot a red herring — when a group gets suspiciously over-connected, Hunchboard gives you a subtle fish-shaped heads-up (turn it off in Settings if it's not your thing). It shows up on your shared results, too.
• A polished sharing experience — a cleaner share image, plus a caption that lists your per-view time and lookups and pastes neatly into Reddit and other Markdown spots.
• Your puzzle credits are now always visible on the home screen, and your supporter status updates the instant a purchase goes through.
• iPad layout fixes so more screens fit the iPad properly.
• Fixes to the first-run tip and the post-purchase home-screen refresh.

Still free with 20 puzzle credits to start. Puzzle Packs $0.99. No subscription, no ads, no accounts.
