### 4/5 — Loving Hungry Root

*2026-08-30, version 132.1*

Hungry Root has helped me be more creative with my meals & helped grocery shopping & cooking for my family of 2 so much more fun! We are trying new foods & products and finding foods & products that are our new staples! It's not cheap but skipping weeks is easy & curated my shopping list is easy!

### 2/5 — They try to sneak in extra charges into your cart

*2026-08-29, version 132.1*

I had an 8 dinner serving plan (36 credits per week). Yet, week after week, the default cart has 40 credits worth of food, with the 4 extra credits being from snacks items, even though I have “none” marked for snacks in my plan/profile. These are not rollover credits. They are literally adding two, 2 credit snack items to my cart above my 8 dinner servings and trying to charge an ~$7 extra for it each week. At first, I thought it was a glitch. I tried searching in the app for a place to turn off adding extras but the only place I could find was the plan page, where I already have “none” marked for everything except 8 dinners servings.

While I like the quick recipes, prechopped veggies, and pre cooked meat options, the sneaky billing practices are a deal breaker.

### 2/5 — They try to sneak in extra charges

*2026-08-29, version 132.1*

I had an 8 dinner serving plan (36 credits per week). The app is supposed to automatically fill your cart based on your plan and you can adjust accordingly if you don’t like what their algorithm comes up with. I’ve noticed for the last two weeks, the default cart selections had 40 credits worth of food, 4 credits above the amount of my plan! The extra food was part of the computer generated cart and not anything I added to the cart.

To be clear, these were NOT rollover credits. There was an additional charge (~$7) for the extra credits THEY added to my cart! To make it worse, the extra credits were for snacks, even though my meal plan selection has “none” marked for snacks. So they added extra things to my cart contrary to my plan selection and then tried to charge me for it! The only time there should ever be add on credits is if the CUSTOMER adds it themselves!

Other observations:
-the credit system makes it harder to determine how much you are paying per meal/item
-the recipe recommendations are so-so and always need customizing
-I do like that they have many quick recipe options with prechopped veggies and precooked proteins and grains.

### 3/5 — Great service but,

*2026-08-13, version 130.1*

Unreal good service. Food is awesome. 2 negatives. If food doesn’t show up you don’t get fed all week and have to do something else with no plans on it. Phone app you can’t log in. Just keep asking me to try something new. Can’t login with Google. Just doesn’t work. Goto get on the computer. Leave my laptop at work a lot so Thursday I either drive in for it or just let them pick.

### 2/5 — First order debacle !!

*2026-08-13, version 130.1*

You would think when somebody orders for the first time they would make an extra effort to make sure everything is included! We were missing two items to make our bison stew,( two bags of the stirfry vegetable ) the portions are not for three adults it’s more like a child’s portion! When we opening our meat bag , it was full of red blood all over everything.. just very unprofessional for a first time order we won’t be returning Customer! I did give it two stars but in my opinion, it should’ve only had one!! They did try to make it right by giving me a $12 credit that I will never use!

### 3/5 — Love the service HATE the app

*2026-08-01*

I love the easy, healthy and delicious meals delivered to my door each week but the app is severely lacking in functionality. I have to update my order every week because despite selecting a 4 person meal plan I’m always being given 2 person meals. And searching for new meals to add takes so much time because the app always shows you the same meals in the same order so you have to scroll a long time to see anything new. There are no helpful filter features such as dinner only so you’re also scrolling through all the breakfast options to find something new. The search field is also lacking as it gives you options completely irrelevant to what you are looking for and doesn’t let you filter for the number of people in your family so I’m always finding something that looks good but it’s for 2 people and I can’t find the one for 4 people. Also, a recent issue is that the freezer packs have been completely melted and broken open upon arrival so I have to wash everything because it’s covered in freezer pack goo.

**Developer response:** Hi there, we're so sorry to hear of this experience and we appreciate you letting us know. We've passed your review along to the correct team.

### 4/5 — Almost everything is awesome!

*2026-07-27, version 127.1*

The food options, the order options, the app, convenience, service - all awesome!…
But the packing department lacks quality. EVERY WEEK my groceries are covered in gel from the leaking cold packs they use. IT’S A MESS! And the box leaks and makes a mess on my porch. I’m not exaggerating when I say this happens every week. Customer service thinks this is fine because the gel is “non-toxic.”
Also, the people packing the food don’t care. Last week my salad greens were freezer burnt due to their placement in the box. Week before that my chicken empanadas were at the very top of the box, not placed in the cold section of the box at the bottom. Food containers are often crushed and damaged. Also, delivery is known to arrive a day late. :/
Despite the packing and delivery failures, Hungryroot still has my business. They are the best option for me - one single person living in a rural area.

### 4/5 — Love this service

*2026-07-19, version 126.1*

I love the service and would like to use it more. I wish you were able to accommodate larger families with larger serving sizes for meals - usually it seems to tap out at 4 servings. Also, I wish you had a better list of allergens or foods to avoid. I am allergic to oats and it’s really complicated to manage that, since our family has to have gf food for one family member and a lot of gf foods compensate with oats. I also wish you had someone to talk to when something went wrong. Overall, I am really glad this service is out there. Thanks for building it!

### 2/5 — Food is usually okay but delivery leaves a lot to be desired

*2026-07-16, version 126*

The app does not update. There is little to no recourse if your groceries don’t arrive the day they are supposed to and you are just left hanging.

### 2/5 — Why AI Food?

*2026-07-15, version 126*

The AI food pictures are immature and egregious. You have the food right there, why not take a picture of it?! Why are you showing me plastic and saying it’s healthy to consume? I’m so turned off.

### 4/5 — Time and budget saver

*2026-07-11, version 125.1*

Hungry root saves me time from having to think about and create healthy menu each week. They have meal options that are easy to make. Most of the recipes can be made quickly and there are plenty of options to please my family. The meals are affordable and they even have some fresh produce, which makes it so I don’t have to go to the store as often. Love It!

### 4/5 — Great recipes, but questionable produce

*2026-06-30, version 124*

I think the recipes are great, there is a large selection. We have rarely repeated meals and love trying new ones. The only issues we have had repeatedly is bad produce, either it’s already gone bad by the time it has gotten to me (produce with expiration dates from a month prior) or they are only good for a day or two.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — AI really?

*2026-08-19, version 131*

This didn’t need AI. I’m disappointed that a company that touts its commitment to sustainability would implement such an unnecessary feature.

### 1/5 — Terrible Customer Service

*2026-08-05, version 129*

False promises, delayed shipping with warm food, terrible customer service. They provide 0 retribution for mistakes made on their part. And to make up for mistakes made they will only give you a credit spaced out over such a long period of time to keep you from being able to cancel. Such a scammy business.

### 1/5 — Didn’t even get to try it

*2026-08-03, version 129*

I was very interested in this company, signed up, had several meals and snacks picked out and then…nothing. I got an email at almost 9pm saying my delivery had been made around 2:30pm. No picture on the email and no food at my door. I checked all my security camera footage and had nothing. I get that this is the contracted delivery company’s fault, but they didn’t even try to keep me. I cancelled immediately because if they messed up the first order I couldn’t see it getting much better. I was refunded at least, but very disappointed that I didn’t even get to try anything.

### 1/5 — App update sucks

*2026-08-02, version 128*

I love love love hungry root and the recipes but I think they updated it within the last few days and all of the recipes are gone, the ratings of users on the recipes is gone, the ability to filter for calories is gone… I don’t know how to even use it now except for groceries. It was so user friendly and great to use before.

### 1/5 — Unwanted

*2026-07-29, version 128*

I did not want this second delivery and do not want anymore in the future .

### 1/5 — Glitchy app

*2026-07-27, version 128*

Have you guys even tested the app? It’s not user friendly at all, ordered recipes are missing from the cookbook, instructions are not loading in full, I’m unable to submit my review on the recipe - the confirmation button is doing nothing. Overall, the UX is extremely poor, it’s my first order and I should not be having so many difficulties!

### 1/5 — Terrible New Update

*2026-07-18, version 126.1*

It’s almost like the designer who made the update has never used the app to actually cook. The new instagram style feed is completely useless and does not help anyone who actually wants to use the app to you know… See the recipes that you are actively cooking that week or order upcoming items. Am really disappointed here. What used to be right on the homepage is now buried behind menu after menu after menu all while I’m just attempting to make dinner

### 1/5 — Review

*2026-07-10, version 125*

I just do not like this company, this app, or their customer service. They do use AI and just ugh. Glad to be gone.

### 1/5 — Uses AI pics

*2026-07-04, version 124.1*

Its hard to choose the meals you want when you can’t trust the picture of the finished product. Its seems pointless to choose to use AI when you don’t need to. Unless they don’t actually have a test kitchen, in which case I trust them even less.
The last couple of times I’ve checked my order they have also added snacks that take my points total over the amount I have signed up for. This time they added an extra $10 worth of snacks, and the food certainly isn’t worth that much. Not sure why they keep doing that. Are people not checking the order before it goes through and so they pay extra without noticing? Also seems pretty dishonest.
I find the meal choice is repetitive and boring if you have diet restrictions. They have introduced me to some fun new brands I probably wouldn’t have tried, but on the whole, its not enough to keep me as a customer.

### 1/5 — Unreliable

*2026-06-29, version 124*

I keep getting the wrong products. They ship the wrong days! Mold and dead bugs have been found in my packages and at least 1 item is crushed and unusable per package! I email them relentlessly and they just keep messing it up! Awful

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Healthy Eating

*2026-09-04, version 133*

My mother and I are super impressed by the healthy foods, both delicious and nutritious. I live in the woods and not close to shopping at all so Convenience is really important and I love how easy it has become to just open the fridge or pantry and get out a single sized snack w/o worrying about having to much food. I don’t overeat and I don’t throw things away, I believe the value is in that fact and works well with our lifestyle.

### 5/5 — LOVE

*2026-08-27, version 132.1*

I love Hungry Root. Best Ever Delivery service…EVER…Great app with no surprises with ingredients and easily customizable deliveries. Fantastic!

### 5/5 — Great Service

*2026-08-25, version 132.1*

I love this, and you can easily pick the products and food you like and dislike. However, can we add a part where we can explain why we don’t like the product instead of just pushing a thumbs up and thumbs down button?!

### 5/5 — Pedacito de mi vida

*2026-08-25, version 132.1*

Predictor de mi vida

### 5/5 — Great

*2026-08-04, version 129*

Yeah actually has been great. Any issue was dealt with quickly. Very tasty.

### 5/5 — So good !

*2026-07-18, version 126.1*

Love this service !

### 5/5 — Solution!

*2026-07-10, version 125*

Hungryroot gives you delicious, healthy food at your doorstep with zero hassle! As a nurse, I believe organic food makes a big impact on my well being. And as a career woman, I love that I don’t have to make more decisions about what to cook and where to shop. Thank you Hungryroot for taking care of me!

### 5/5 — Let’s talk truth

*2026-07-06, version 125*

As a single mom, taking a bunch of kids to the store is just a nightmare. A list of groceries to make a meal, trying to recipe plan? I remember my first 1yr old 😂.

Hungryroot has been a staple in my household for almost a year now. I don’t only use the recipes, I often utilize their groceries feature, too. My kids go through that pineapple like it was freshly cut from a tree. They’ve also explored so many things they never did before.

Obviously I still buy staples like cereal and their faves that HR might now offer (check for milk! It’s there!) and their customer service gets a bad rap.

I literally dropped my phone in liquid last week and have been scrambling to log back into apps that mattered (passwords are my kryptonite), and all it took was a text to customer service and I was back up and back to curating my next box within a few hours.

I’ve always been skeptical about meal planning sub boxes—this one has earned their place in Mom Word of Mouth: try it, it’s worth it, you guys.

### 5/5 — So good and so easy

*2026-07-04, version 124.1*

I have tried MANY meal service and grocery service options and Hungry Root is by far the best for ease, value, taste, and variety. I love having the option to choose meals and groceries in the same app, and being able to get snack size to try new things is fantastic. Definitely worth trying!

### 5/5 — The best!

*2026-06-23, version 123*

This meal plan has kept me healthy and strong. It takes the stress out of food shopping and cooking, and I can get exactly the types of foods I need. The quality of the food is top-notch and wholesome.
