## What is HVAC Residential Load Calcs?

This app may just change the way you do business.

This is one of the longest running HVAC Manual J8 cooling and heating load calculation apps on the market today. See why tens of thousands of engineers, technicians, and architects have licensed our software for their HVAC engineering needs.

This app now includes the HVAC Equipment Locator. Click here for details: http://bit.ly/1yTq539.

This app allows you to perform detailed block and room-by-room heating and cooling loads for residential buildings out in the field, by taking advantage of the simplicity and power of the iPhone.

This app was designed by Carmel Software Corporation, a 25-year old software design firm specializing in engineering analysis software applications. We are not just 1 person designing mobile apps out of a bedroom. We are a team of software developers and engineers with over 50 years combined software and engineering design experience. In fact, our software powers the analysis capabilities of major Autodesk (The makers of AutoCAD) software tools such as Autodesk Revit.

The following is just a small sample of the features included in this app:

1. Calculations based upon abridged ACCA Manual J8 calculations (This is not an ACCA-approved app. For our ACCA-approved iPad app, search for the HVAC ResLoad-J app on the app store)

2. Includes a 1000+ world-wide city weather database

3. Includes data for 100s of construction types for walls, roofs, floors, doors, windows, skylights, ceilings, and more

4. Allows you to create and store an unlimited number of projects

5. Allows you to create an unlimited number of rooms and view individual loads and airflows for those rooms

6. Allows you to specify an unlimited # of opaque types (ie – doors, walls, roofs, floors, ceilings), window types, and skylight types for each building

7. Allows you to instantly view total heating and cooling load results as you update input data

8. Allows you to view comprehensive cooling and heating load breakdown reports including breakdown by opaque load, window load, skylight load, infiltration load, ventilation load and internal load contributions

9. Opaque inputs include opaque type, opaque construction number, dimensions, and opening areas

10. Window inputs include window type, internal and external shading type, overhang dimensions, window area, and more..

11. Additional input types include # of people, # of bedrooms, ventilation airflow, and more..

12. Includes ability to display a wide variety of on-screen reports including checksum reports (ie – BTUh/SqFt, SqFt/Ton, etc.), complete heating and cooling load breakdown reports, and even graphically-pleasing pie charts showing cooling and heating load breakdowns

13. Includes the ability to display a comprehensive HTML report that you can email to yourself or others, and it also includes a spreadsheet attachment that you can open in Excel to further massage data on your desktop

14. Includes English (IP) or Metric (SI) units

15. This is the same technology that powers the Trane MAP iPad app that they offer to their elite dealer network

The benefits of using this app are numerous including:

1. Great for use out in the field. Quickly size heating and cooling equipment, show the client, then email the results back to your office for further analysis.

2. Show off your advanced on-screen reports to clients convincing them you are using cutting-edge technology

3. Save time by inputting information in the field and then returning to your office to perform more in-depth analysis

### 3/5 — Envelopes are confusing

*2025-03-21, version 5.6*

3 stars because it does the job. What job that is, whether it is accurate… Dunno yet.

Envelope categories: Not positive but I think that in Manual J, 16B- refers to a vented attic with insulation at the roof deck, meaning the insulation follows the slope of the roof rather than sitting on the ceiling. Not in this app! It is classified as “Under attic”. The descriptions are not the best. And the categories seem incomplete too. Pretty sure there are many not listed here. But I’m mostly worried they are completely wrong.

Another weird thing: when I define, say a floor, in the Block Load Info > Envelope, it asks for length and width (say, 14’ x 10’). Great! Changing the length and width values in this section definitely affects overall heat load. Also great! But then if you go to Room List > Envelope and assign that floor to the room, it asks me for Area… Not great! Why, if it already knows the area from the Block Load info > Envelope section, am I entering Area? But ok… it asks, so I enter: 140 sq ft.

Heres the weird thing though. If I change the Area of the envelope when assigning it to a room, it affects the Heat Load for that room. Kind of what you would expect. But if I go to the Block Load Info > Envelope list and change the length and width, it also affects the Heat Load for that room!

Since changing either of them has an effect, are both being applied and, if so, why? I am tempted to make the Block Info > Envelope simple 1 square foot (1’x1’) — mostly because the number it is spitting out for my 1660 sq ft house (50k BTUh) seems a bit high.

Still hoping these are quirks with the app that have solutions after learning it better. I am probably going to calculate all by hand against manual j and find out.

### 5/5 — Go to load Calc app.

*2022-05-23, version 5.5*

Used this app many times to perform load calculations with success.

### 1/5 — DW

*2022-02-09, version 5.5*

Can’t open app customer service will not respond. Don’t waste your money like I just did.

### 1/5 — No Good for Energy-Efficient Homes

*2019-08-06, version 3.0*

Cannot find any inputs that are even half as good as what I am designing. If you are just building to the codes, this is probably fine, but I just wasted 35$ on an app that is completely useless to me. Oh, but if I spend ANOTHER $25 I can apparently get an add-on with more default types...but still have no idea if they have anything that will meet NZE!

### 3/5 — Disappointing

*2019-04-11, version 3.0*

App works as you would expect. You can email a report which is all good, but the file is not printable and sharing is not much of an option. Wish I would’ve known that, I would’ve kept looking. Could this not be changed to send as a PDF?
Also feels very much like an old app. Hasn’t been updated in quite some time.

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2018-06-25, version 3.0*

Every time I load a new project it just crashes, waste of money

### 5/5 — This load calc app is accurate

*2014-08-13, version 1.9*

I’m not sure about some of the other comments, but this app is really useful. I find it accurate and I love using it in the field to do those quick calcs. My clients love it too.

### 2/5 — Pretty Poor

*2013-08-22, version 1.9*

Input is clunky. Never sure if you are doing it right and there is no help. Can't input direction walls face, only windows. Room feature, main reason I bought it is only 1/2 finished. Can input any opaque surface you want in your room as long as its a ceiling w no insulation. Can only add items, not delete them. Text often reverts after editing. Because I have no idea if its understanding what I'm inputting, can't rely on the output.

### 1/5 — Noooo good

*2012-05-17, version 1.9*

Wasted $35 don't do it. Better pen and paper. It's completely waste.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2011-12-29, version 1.9*

I use this for various buildings and rooms at the company I work for and it's amazing the short comings of construction design that are pointed out. Which as you can guess brings me to a much mentioned request: bring on the commercial building app! Please...
