## What is Hybrid Workout Training?

Kufu (工夫) means mastery through devoted effort. It is a training app for hybrid athletes: barbell and dumbbell work on one side, pull-ups, dips and bodyweight strength on the other, in the same session instead of in two different apps.

Pull day opens with pull-ups. Chest day carries dips. Bodyweight strength sits beside the barbell as a peer, not as a warm-up.

SKILLS AS A TALENT TREE
- Seven calisthenics trees: handstand, front and back lever, L-sit, muscle-up, cartwheel to aerial, press to handstand
- Every node has a challenge: a timed hold, clean reps, landings out of attempts. Pass it and the node opens. Nothing else opens it
- Practise a node and it logs as a real workout, on the phone or the Watch
- The coach knows your trees, and tells you when a hold you already did in practice is ready to be made official

A COACH YOU CAN TALK TO
- Ask what to train today and get an answer grounded in what you actually did
- Say the bench is taken and get a swap on the spot, mid-workout, without losing the sets you logged
- Paste the program you already follow and have it turned into a plan
- On iPhones with Apple Intelligence the coach runs on Apple's own models, on device or on Private Cloud Compute, and every reply tells you which one answered

TRAINING THAT FOLLOWS YOUR BODY
- Sessions are described by what they work, not by a calendar label
- What to train next comes from which muscles have recovered
- Warm-up sets on your first heavy lift, from the empty bar up; a warm-up and a cooldown around every session, all switchable
- Five-week cycles with progressive overload, RPE tracking and deload detection
- Back-safe selection by default: no barbell back squats, no conventional deadlifts

PLANS THAT ARE YOURS
- Twelve starter plans, grouped as Hybrid (calisthenics + weights), Calisthenics only and Gym only — Push/Pull/Legs, Upper/Lower, Full Body, Powerbuilding, or Bar & Floor for travelling without a gym
- Or build your own sessions, name them what you call them, and set one active to follow
- Exercises play a looping animation with a coaching cue, so you can see the movement before you do it

NUTRITION WITHOUT TYPING NUMBERS
- Photograph a plate or describe what you ate and get the macros estimated
- Protein and calorie targets set from your goal and weight, each with the reason behind it
- A suggestion of what to eat next — the food that covers your protein, or a banana before training
- On Apple Intelligence iPhones the estimate runs on device

ON YOUR WRIST AND HOME SCREEN
- Apple Watch app that stays in step both ways: start on either device, finish on either, edit on the phone mid-session and see it on the wrist
- Log a set on the Watch in one screen: the next set is prefilled and the Digital Crown changes weight or reps
- Today's session, the rest of your plan, skill practice and your recent workouts, one screen on the Watch
- Live Activity that carries the whole rest — the exercise, what to load, how long you have — with Skip during a rest and Done to log the set, for a workout started on either device
- Home Screen widgets, plus Siri and Shortcuts for water, weight and protein

TRACK ONLY WHAT YOU WANT
Workouts are always on. Nutrition, body weight, water, walking, gut health and skills each switch on or off, suggested from your goal in onboarding and changeable later in Settings. What you switch off disappears from the app and from the coach. Reminders come only for what you haven't logged, and stop the moment you do.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.0.8 — 2026-10-06

YOUR GOAL, AND WHAT EVERY NUMBER IS FOR

• Kufu now asks what you're training for first — lose fat, build muscle, get stronger or general fitness — and shows it at the top of Home. Tap it to change it.
• Protein, calories and water are worked out from your goal and body weight, instead of starting at the same numbers for everyone.
• Tap any number on Home for a short note on what it's for, for your goal.
• Home suggests what to eat next: short on protein, it names food that covers it; training later, a banana or toast an hour before; after a session, protein for recovery. Tap it to log food.
• What to track is suggested from your goal. Water and gut health now start switched off for new users — one tap away in Settings.
• The coach knows your goal too.

FASTER LOGGING ON THE APPLE WATCH

• Log a set straight from the exercise page: the next set is already filled in, the Digital Crown changes the weight (tap reps to change those), and Log Set starts your rest. No more small + and a separate screen.
• A green outline shows which number the crown is changing.
• Exercise names are shown in full, and dots show how many sets are done.
• The rest timer no longer covers the play button on the music page.

PLANS THAT MATCH YOUR WEEK

• Choose six days for Push / Pull / Legs and you get six sessions — Push A, Pull A, Legs A, Push B, Pull B, Legs B — with different accessory exercises on the second of each. The setup screen shows exactly what you'll get.
• One New Plan button: pick a template or start a custom plan from the same list.

LOCK SCREEN AND HOME

• During a rest the workout card on your Lock Screen offers Skip instead of Done, and switches back to Done when the rest is over.
• The card shows a picture of the exercise you're on.
• Home's daily numbers fill up with colour as you reach your targets, and muscle recovery has its own section.

SMALLER FIXES

• An open exercise no longer spills off the edge of the screen, and the "try reducing the weight" tip no longer appears under warm-up sets.
• One menu on a plan instead of two.
• Long labels like "Overreach" and "Mobility" no longer break across lines.

### 2.0.7 — 2026-09-30

A TEST SET EACH CYCLE, SO THE WEIGHTS ARE MEASURED RATHER THAN ASSUMED

• Week four's last set on your first lift is now a test: same weight, as many clean reps as you can. What it reaches is what the next cycle's weights are built on.
• Until now week four added a step because it was week four. Nothing ever asked how much you actually had.
• Twelve reps where eight were asked opens the next cycle heavier. Five opens it lighter — the set said the weight wasn't there, and that is the point rather than a fault.
• Past twelve reps it refuses to estimate and says so. The load was too light to read anything from, so try the test a notch heavier.
• Bodyweight sessions get no test set. There is no weight to set, and the skill trees already have their own max-effort test — a node opens by passing its challenge and by nothing else.
• Settings › Around the workout › Test set each cycle turns it off. It is on to begin with: one set every five weeks, not a tap on every set.

### 2.0.6 — 2026-09-25

KUFU LEARNS YOUR WORKING WEIGHT

• Work up 40, 50, 60, 70 to find what you can do and Kufu used to hand you the same climb again next time, so you started from the bottom every week. It opens at the weight you established now.
• And it is honest about which weight that was: if the top of the climb was not held for the reps you were asked for — 70 for 5 against a target of 8 — it opens at the heaviest one that was, so 60 rather than 70.
• A climb you meant is kept. Ascending sets that come back a second time are read as a pyramid you chose, not a search, and left alone.
• New, optional: Rate every set. Switch it on in Settings and a finished set offers 6 to 10. Kufu can then tell twelve comfortable reps from twelve that nearly killed you — a set taken to the edge holds the weight next time however the reps went. One extra tap per set, so it is yours to ask for.

WARM-UP AND STRETCHES, FOR ANY PLAN

• They are built from the exercises you are actually doing that day. Switching them on in Settings did nothing for a plan you wrote yourself, because they only ever came from the plan — and a plan you built has none. They arrive whatever plan you follow now, and they follow what you change: swap the squats for a press and the stretches follow.

HOME

• Leads with protein and water. It opened on the training plan and put the day's numbers fourth, which had it backwards — the plan is read once a day, protein and water every time you open the app. The numbers are first, the log buttons second, today's session under them.

APPLE WATCH

• Fixed: leaving a workout and coming back threw it away. The back arrow never ended the session, but tapping the same session again restarted it from scratch — every set gone, the clock back at zero. It picks up where you left off.
• There is no back arrow while a workout is running. It was the one control on that screen that did not mean what it looked like. While you are training the workout is the screen, and you leave it with End.
• The main screen says when a workout is still running, and takes you back to it.
• Fixed: opening a skill tree you have not started jumped to the bottom of it.
• A locked skill tree says which trees to finish first. Press to handstand needs a 60-second freestanding handstand and L-sit mastery, and nothing said so.

### 2.0.5 — 2026-09-24

THE APPLE WATCH WORKOUT, REBUILT

• The screens swipe sideways now, like the Workout app. They paged up and down before, which spent the Digital Crown on changing page — so a screen with more on it than fitted had no way to be read, and the exercise name could run over the back button and the clock. Swipe picks the screen, the crown reads it, and the dots at the bottom show where you are.
• Two screens instead of three: the session (timer, heart rate, calories, pause and end) and the exercise you are on. Kufu opens on the exercise now, so logging a set no longer starts with a swipe.
• A third screen for Now Playing — play, skip and volume for whatever is playing on the Watch or the iPhone. Apple Music, Spotify, a podcast, anything.
• A small icon in the corner of the Watch's main screen carries the warnings and suggestions the phone has always shown and the wrist never had: a deload the numbers say is due, the deload week you are in and how much is left, a weigh-in you have not done. It is not there at all when there is nothing to say.
• Your completed sets read on one line rather than one row each, so the back / add / forward buttons stay where you can reach them however many sets you have done.

ADD WARM-UP AND STRETCHES TO A PLAN YOU ALREADY FOLLOW

• Both blocks were only ever built into a plan when the plan was created — so a plan you adopted before they existed, or one you wrote yourself, never had them, and the Settings switches could not put them there. Plan options now offers "Add warm-up & stretches", naming how many sessions it will touch. Nothing is replaced or removed, a session that already has them is left alone, and you can delete any of them afterwards.

THE WEEK

• Your whole week fits on screen. The strip showed five and a half days and you had to drag for the rest — so Saturday and Sunday, the two days still most worth deciding about, were the two you could not see.
• The days line up. A long session name pushed that day's name and circle higher than its neighbours' and left the row ragged.

FIXED

• A Monday workout could drop out of your week. Train on a Monday and the strip went on showing Monday untrained, and your plan offered the session you had just finished. On other days the same fault quietly lost a Monday-morning session for the rest of the week.
• The phone named the wrong session while the Watch ran another one — "Back" on screen while the wrist ran Legs. The day was also credited to the wrong session of your plan, so the rotation moved past one you had not trained.
• The Lock Screen card for a Watch workout could never appear at all. It is held now, and goes up the moment you open Kufu.
• Asking your coach on the Watch could come back a blank screen, and the coach was told an empty session looked like a real workout.
• A workout that ends by itself on the Watch no longer disappears silently — whatever was logged in it reaches your phone.

### 2.0.4 — 2026-09-21

• A workout you start on your Apple Watch now shows on your iPhone's Lock Screen, the same as one started on the phone: the session, the exercise you are on, sets done, and the rest countdown. It appears with the phone locked and Kufu closed, and goes when you end the workout on either device.
• The Live Activity carries the whole rest. Instead of a bare countdown it says what you are going back to and what to load for it — "Cable Hammer Curls — set 2/3 · 80.8 kg × 8 · 1:28 rest". Same on the Dynamic Island.
• One button on it: Done. It logs the set you are on at the weight already prefilled, starts the next rest and updates the card, so a whole exercise runs from the Lock Screen. Hidden for a workout running on the Watch, where the wrist owns the sets.
• A notification when the rest is over, carrying that same line — so the alert tells you what to do, not just that time is up.
• A Home tab, and Kufu opens on it: what to do today and a tap to start it, your week so far, one-tap Log food / Weigh in / +250 ml, and today's protein, calories, water, steps and recovery. Everything the Progress tab held is one row down under "Your progress" — nothing was removed.
• Start and End are where you can reach them. Both used to sit below every exercise and the notes field; there is a bar at the bottom of the workout screen now.
• The deload week changed shape. It used to halve your sets at 85% of the weight, which came out as a two-set session that felt like nothing. Now you keep every set and the weight comes off instead — about 70%, at the bottom of the rep range. Bodyweight movements drop a set instead, having no weight to take off.
• Twelve starter plans instead of five, grouped by what kind of training they are: Hybrid — calisthenics + weights, Calisthenics only, Gym only. Hybrid leads, and it is new: every plan you could adopt before was either a gym split or bodyweight, even though the split Kufu ships with is hybrid.
• The rest timer tells you what to load — the weight and reps for the set you are about to do, not just its name.
• The rest timer can be put away without ending it. The countdown carries on in the timer bar, so you can check a weight or swap the next exercise mid-rest.
• Settings is on every tab. It was only in the Coach tab, so reaching your profile, pillars or subscription meant opening a conversation first.
• The Training tab opens with what to do today — the session, how many exercises, and why it is today's. Tap it to start.
• Add a set from the bottom of the list, and swipe one away.
• Fixed: your plan's own order decides what to train next. On a body-part split the recommendation had been jumping to Legs whatever the plan said — five days into a 5-Day Split it offered Legs on a day the plan said Chest + Abs, and called it "next in 5-Day Split" while doing it. The plan is now followed in order, and recovery says its piece in the line underneath: "Next in 5-Day Split — push still recovering".
• Fixed: the Home Screen widget ignored your plan, naming a built-in session while every screen in the app named the one from your plan.
• A session you trained but never ended now moves your plan on, instead of the rotation waiting for the End Workout button and re-offering the day you had just done.
• Fixed: on the Apple Watch, only the recommended session could be tapped. Every other day of your plan, and every skill practice, drew a row that did nothing.
• Fixed: the watch's Recent list ran days behind the phone's, and the wrist went on offering a session you had already trained. Both counted a workout at different moments.
• Fixed: "Swap" and "Clear warm-up" showing as "S" and "c" in an open exercise, and the last set row of a part-finished exercise being numbered wrong.
