### 2/5 — Huge fan of wave light games, but...

*2020-09-17, version 1.01*

I have all the wave light games and played every one through multiple times. I have even deleted them sometimes because I play them too much.

Normally, the downside of a small studio game ( for example like some bugs, some reused or sub par assets, some graphics wonkiness ) are more than made up for by the large scope, the huge number of classes, a nice story and great game mechanics that allow you to replay a bunch of times.

Here, though, everything is half baked, so you get all the downsides (soooo many bugs, and clear faults like things in the shop that no character can equip- really?!? Did you even play your own game!) but you cannot choose your team, and there are only 12 very similar levels, not 30.

My advice is to get demon’s rise 2, or the other space game, or ANY other wave light game. This is just so much worse than everything else they have done. It makes me sad.

### 2/5 — Pretty poor

*2020-09-11, version 1.0*

Graphics are very dated. Gameplay is okay but after the first scenario, seems poorly balanced. Often can’t see enemies or your own troops if they standing behind a wall. Not a good start.
And definitely nowhere near being a “premium” game.

### 3/5 — Crashing

*2020-09-11*

Having same issues. Load to go to first mission and app crashes. On an iPhone 8. Game looks like it would have great potential. Just hate that I broke down and bought it and I can’t even play it after launch.

**Developer response:** Please try with the latest version as it addressed the crash issue.

### 2/5 — It’s just confusing, and kind of a mess.

*2020-09-10*

This is a strong start. I like the ideas, and I’m a huge fan of the genre pioneered by XCOM, but there is so much missing, awkwardly executed, or just plain unclear. Enemy turns are slow, whether you use Game Speed Up or not; there is no indication of deeper content, powers seem to be tied to a single button, but again, it’s unclear.

Until this is cleaned up, I recommend going with XCOM, screaming for XCOM 2: War of the Chosen to come to iPad, or going with the superb Halcyon 6. But give this a pass for now.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback. The game does have various tactical elements but a lot of them are not clear as the tutorial needs to be improved. Once we get a bug fix patch out, we'll look into improving the tutorial so as to better convey the tactical aspects of the game. Also, the first two levels are a bit slow as we thought we would have them be a gradual introduction for the player. However, in the next patch, we will make them a bit more engaging as this appears to have been a design error on our part.

### 1/5 — Still doesn’t work after update.

*2020-09-20*

Patch doesn’t fix the issue, and dynamic shadows are no longer an option in the graphics menu.

**Developer response:** Hi, this appears to be an issue with the Dynamic Shadows option in graphics. Please disable it and the game should work fine. The upcoming patch will fix this automatically.

### 1/5 — Still crashing

*2020-09-18*

Has been crashing on my iPad Pro last generation. Looks good but can’t play

**Developer response:** Can you please send me an email with the graphics settings you have enabled in the game options? Also, can you try turning off all options and selecting graphics detail to "Fastest" to see if that addresses the crash issue?

### 1/5 — Still crashing after a week

*2020-09-18*

Game is DOA? Time for refund?

**Developer response:** Can you please send me an email with your graphics options and device that you are running on?

### 1/5 — Game won’t start

*2020-09-12*

Disappointed by the fact I can’t get past the intro cutscene without the app failing. I’m on an iPhone 7 like the description says but that’s apparently not enough.

**Developer response:** Please try with the latest version. The crash issue has been fixed.

### 1/5 — Crashing

*2020-09-11*

Cannot get past the intro. One would think these sorts of issues would have been worked out prior to launch...

To Wave Light Games - it is a 6th gen iPad. All software is up to date, I’ve deleted and reinstalled. Still not able to actually start a game.

**Developer response:** Please try with the latest version as it addressed the crash issue.

### 1/5 — Crashing

*2020-09-11*

Made it past the intro, but can’t get into the first mission.

**Developer response:** Please try with the latest version as it addressed the crash issue.

### 1/5 — Boring and bland....

*2020-09-10, version 1.0*

I expected more from this game, it obviously I got it wrong.....
There is no depth to this game whatsoever, every “level” looks just like the last just with a different layout.....the characters you couldn’t care less about as you don’t gain any attachment to Them, the game lacks dialogue..
As one reviewer said.....” move two squares, next character, move two squares....end turn, repeat”!!!...
It is a very poor attempt at what could be a great game....but they have failed to even inject the basic enjoyment into this....such a shame...
Wish I’d save the £1.99 for a lotto ticket now!!

### 1/5 — First impressions- DULL

*2020-09-09, version 1.0*

Nothing grabs you with this game. Move two squares, move next guy two squares, move next guy... end your turn and wait one minute. Repeat. Seems very lacking in pace and action.

### 1/5 — Crashes before first mission.

*2020-09-08, version 1.0*

As title. Should make sure games work on launch really. Rookie error.

### 2/5 — Crashing on two IPads

*2020-09-17*

Worthless game so far because I cannot even get the game to start on two tablets. Crashes when trying to load first mission. ....Edit: Game still crashes when trying to start first mission even after recent update, but uninstalling/reinstalling will correct the problem. Game now runs....

**Developer response:** Glad the patch worked.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Good game!

*2021-04-07, version 1.1*

Very happy with this game. Good purchase.

Sometimes, there’s a little bug when trying to move or click a character. I have to click multiple times at the same place before it highlights.

Hope it get fixed. But still a good game.

### 5/5 — Another hit

*2020-09-22*

Loved Hydra Strike Team and this one is even better. Good job to the developers.

**Developer response:** Thanks ... glad you liked it.

### 5/5 — Awesome game. It’s bite sized WaveLight.

*2020-09-21*

First of all, if you haven’t played Shieldwall Chronicles, or any other WaveLight games, you’re missing out on some deep, long tactical RPG games. This is much smaller game, but I enjoyed it nonetheless less.

I see a lot of people complaining about crashes, but I’m on an iPhone 11 and an iPad Mini 5 and it cruises along crash free for me.

Anyway, but this game for me if nothing else, so the Dev can make enough money to do a sequel to Shieldwall.

**Developer response:** Thanks ... appreciate the support. A new Shieldwall game is definitely on the horizon. Hopefully mid 2021

### 5/5 — Works fine now.

*2020-09-12*

New review. Since I turned off dynamic shadows, and set speed to fastest, it plays just fine. Fantastic graphics. Great game!

**Developer response:** Thanks, glad it worked out. Will have some improvements in upcoming patches.

### 5/5 — Fun....

*2020-09-12*

so far, it’s a really fun tactical rpg. Really nice graphics and audio and the gameplay gets intense level 3 onwards.

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2020-09-10, version 1.0*

Very nice tactics game with good controls and hectic action.

### 4/5 — Crashing, Cannot Start First Mission

*2020-09-27*

I cannot get a mission to start. The game crashes on the loading screen after I push the mission 1 button. I am using an iPad Pro 9.7 inch. I put graphics to simple and made sure all additional graphics settings were turn off (including dynamic shadows). The same result. Its too bad. I was looking forward to playing this game!

9/26 The last update did not seem to change anything. However, I deleted the game and reinstalled it and it works fine now. The game mechanics are a little funky. Switching from one character to another typically frustrates me as I try to move one after the other. The turn for the aliens takes a really long time to respond (we’re not talking minutes, just more seconds then are comfortable to sit and stare at the screen). Also, the only character with a sword is way to fragile. Seeing as she has to be up close to attack, her armor and hp should be stacked. A tank if you will. But Each time I play the first mission, she dies the moment she goes in to fight, getting killed in one hit each time. Perhaps it’s just been bad luck every time, but it makes me just want to keep her out if the fight since she can’t do anything other than fight up close. The dynamics of all other characters are great though and overall, I’ve been enjoying the game a lot.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback. The characters do get a lot better as the level up. The game is tilted towards giving the aliens the advantage in close combat so the melee fighter is meant to be a last line of defense. That being said, she should be quite capable once she gets to level 3 and above. For the alien game turn, you can press the game speed button to speed it up.

### 4/5 — Love this developer

*2020-09-11*

A little bummed that there are only 12 missions, compared to your guys’ last games. And miss selecting your own team in the beginning. Good improvements in the UI though! Please make another fantasy genre game 😍

**Developer response:** Thanks ... yes, definitely planning out the next Shieldwall game currently.

### 3/5 — Good game bad port

*2020-11-27*

Feels like a pretty half arsed effort, game should play like their other efforts but poor port means slow gameplay and often crashes. Fails to restore saved game most of the time and a few obvious bits unfinished.

### 3/5 — Good, not Great

*2020-09-22*

I’m a big fan of Wavelight Games and I own and have played all of their games on mobile (Demon’s Rise 2 is the best imo). When I saw this game I was really excited, but after I played it I was let down. It’s fun but I liked their earlier games more. Here are my main issues:

1. More level selection. Other games Wavelight has made have had a 30+ level main campaign and 20+ side missions. This game only has a 12 mission campaign.

2. Team selection. I really enjoyed mixing and matching characters in pervious games, and having a team assigned to you just feels bad.

3. Ability redundancy. A lot of characters share the same abilities. This wasn’t a problem in previous games because there were so many characters to choose from. However, this game has only 6, so this problem is more pronounced.

4. I know this is a small gripe, but what happened to the hexagons? The square grid feels awkward and clunky.

That being said, there are improvements in this game over previous Wavelight games too. The UI is improved and the characters that are in the game (I wish there were more!) are very well designed - better than in previous Wavelight games.

Overall, this is a good, not great game. I really love Wavelight, but I feel this is their weakest title. I really enjoy the sci-fi setting, and with some improvements this game could be great too. You guys are incredible developers, and I have faith that you will make this game better. For now, I feel it is only worthy of 3 stars, but if there are updates I will adjust my rating.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback. This game is just meant to be a small game to let people that aren't willing to jump into the bigger games. I will be adding more content in the next few Hyena Squad games but games in this series will be smaller by design.

However, please don't be concerned ... future games, including Strike Team Gladius, will be ported to iOS. The plan is to go through a full Early Access period for those games to get the games as polished as possible before porting to mobile so there may be a delay but they will eventually be ported.
