### 1/5 — Unusable

*2026-07-25, version 14.1.0*

Won’t stay signed in, not much functionality even when you’re in there, not worth the frustration of downloading

### 1/5 — Not intuitive to set up

*2026-07-25, version 14.1.0*

I have 15 smartphone apps on my phone. This is the only one that I needed to call for tech support. It first asks you to get the QR code serial. No problem. The it asks for the Icom module QR which I couldn’t find so I went to the help which had a picture of the location but it didn’t match anything that looked the same on my water heater. I tried to connect it to WiFi like I have done with all of my other apps but it couldn’t find the icon module. Called tech support which they were really great and walked me through getting it set up. A little better app and they can avoid calls to tech support. The app itself is weird. There isn’t any refresh that I can see and I can’t tell if I am actually communicating. I think I am but it would be nice to see an indication. I googled it and supposedly there is an indication but I can’t find it. Maybe it was on a previous version. It seems like the person that programmed this app has never used a Smarthome app before.

### 1/5 — Major infrastructure issue

*2026-07-24, version 14.1.0*

I hate to be critical, but this app barely has any feature. More importantly, constantly log user out of the app. I also use Home Assistant and Home Assistant constantly report connection being unavailable. This signals, there are some major infrastructure issue associated with this whole setup that needs to be addressed. This kind of issue has long been resolved many times over. Please fix

### 1/5 — Barely Workable App

*2026-07-22, version 14.1.0*

Update: July 2026. Dropping a star since they still haven’t fixed the very basic interface problems. Various buttons are still blank and non-functional. The app clearly isn’t a priority for the company.

It lets me change modes remotely, so that’s good I guess. But the electricity usage tracking chart is pretty much useless. And various buttons, including the back button when you go into settings, simply turn white and don’t work sometimes. Very poorly programmed and QA’d. As such, don’t trust that it will do what you want when you need it to.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2026-07-21, version 14.1.0*

Went through the steps to both scan and manually enter my water heater multiple times with no success. Not wottth the trouble

### 1/5 — lacks a common but important feature

*2026-07-16, version 14.1.0*

The app lacks an important feature to automatically switch mode in Schedule. For example, we want to use Hybrid mode during day time but Electric/Vacation mode at midnight e.g., 12:00am - 8:00am.

It might be a little counter-intuitive why I list Electric or Vacation mode together, because these two modes are quiet, while Hybrid mode indeed causes noise during midnight as it will use heat pump, especially you have in-house model.

Every time the hybrid mode works during the midnight, it wake people up, especially your home is quiet. We have to manually put the mode to Electric mode, or manually switch the mode to Electric mode before bedtime.

The app’s current function cares only efficiency or cost-saving, and use this for selling point, but never thinks that we need a quiet mode during midnight. I saw people discussed about this feature on Reddit three years ago, and frustrated to see this feature is not available until today.

### 1/5 — If I could, I give it zero stars

*2026-07-16, version 14.1.0*

I had the previous app that provided little assistance or use. I hoped that in this day and age A. O. Smith would produce an app that’s useful. Unfortunately when I tried to sign back in, it did not recognize my water heater. I tried to register but it did not recognize my serial number. Called, on hold no action. Called again and spent 45 min with a technician who informed me that he couldn’t fix it but his team was world be able to but it was a holiday and it might take a few days. That was 2 weeks ago. Heard nothing. Still not able to access the app. Called again. On hold. Called again and the automated system said they call back as the wait was 10 min. Two days later, still no callback. Don’t buy from A.O. Smith. Don’t bother with this app.

### 1/5 — App will not connect

*2026-07-11, version 14.1.0*

App is a janky mess, tons of problems most of all will not connect to water heater.

### 1/5 — Terrible

*2026-07-08, version 14.1.0*

I repeatedly have trouble with this app and it’s predecessor, the AO Smith app. I am often logged out and get a generic error when trying to log back in. I call phone support and am told, “they’re updating the app, please try again in 24 hours.” If that’s the case, the app should describe that maintenance is underway. This same condition has been the case for the two years I’ve owned this water heater. Terrible app and no communication from the company.

### 1/5 — Helpful when it works, which is NEVER!

*2026-07-07, version 14.1.0*

This app works one time, doesn’t, next works again, then doesn’t!

I’ve had to set up my water heater. I don’t even know how many times because it forgets it.

If you don’t log into the thing regularly it forgets you faster than an Ex!

### 1/5 — Worst app on my phone tbh!

*2026-07-07, version 14.1.0*

Horrible app, never works when required. Keeps signing out and removes my heater from profile. Even to submit the feedback on the app it required multiple attempts and yet couldn’t do it. Hire some good developers!!

### 1/5 — Incredible bad

*2026-07-07, version 14.1.0*

One of the worst apps out there. Why is AO Smith letting this damage their reputation? Keeps disconnecting. Keeps forgetting devices. Unresponsive for no reason. The list goes on.

### 1/5 — Doesn't Work

*2026-07-05, version 14.1.0*

Don't bother downloading this.

### 1/5 — Failed even creating an account

*2026-07-04, version 14.1.0*

Could not even onboard with this app. Their team has been notified though and is actively investigating the cause, though, according to the message shown. Will try again next week.

### 1/5 — Unreliable

*2026-07-02, version 14.1.0*

The app does not execute the commands that it proposes to do. After I’ve input my schedule to top off hot water, it doesn’t ever follow through with it.

### 1/5 — App sucks

*2026-07-01, version 14.1.0*

It doesn’t update and just overall doesn’t work despite being connected.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2026-06-27, version 14.1.0*

I don’t log in often but when I do I would expect my water heater to still be in the app but nope. Every time I need to re-add my water heater. So stupid.

### 1/5 — Terrible app

*2026-06-20, version 14.1.0*

It stopped connecting to the AO Smith server for some unknown reason. I had to delete the app and start over in order to get it to reconnect. Pathetic, in this day and age.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Worst app on the AppStore

*2026-09-02, version 14.1.0*

Can’t log in, and if once in a hundred tries you’re able to log in, you can’t apply schedules, can’t change any of the settings because the connection gets lost, and you’ll have to login again. The issue is not the water heater itself, but the app’s connection to the AO Smith API

### 1/5 — App Needs Improvement

*2026-08-29, version 14.1.0*

Not a whole lot of useful functionality in the app… which is fine if it was reliable and you were able to consistently login to the app and it would stay connected to your water heater. But staying logged into and having it stay connected has been an issue. It’s current telling me my water heater is at 1450 degrees… another error. I must say it was nice when it does integrate with my Home Assistant, I liked having the historical data on my water heater and additional features HA integration added.

### 1/5 — Won’t stay logged in

*2026-08-27, version 14.1.0*

Every time I log into the app it only keeps me logged in for about 30 seconds before I get kicked out and have to log in again. I use the Rheem Econet app for another water heater that I have and that one never logs me out and the overall usability is much better. Come on AO Smith, is this the best you can do? This app needs a complete overhaul.

### 1/5 — This App Sucks

*2026-08-17, version 14.1.0*

This app is useless. It’s difficult to get it to connect with my water heater and does not have any useful functionality.

### 1/5 — Not good

*2026-08-12, version 14.1.0*

Cannot get app to register. Says QR code not valid. Tried to manually add. Wants a Device SN (different from the SN). Cannot locate it. Awful.

### 1/5 — Garbage

*2026-08-11, version 14.1.0*

This has got to be the winner of the worst app ever!! Nothing, and I mean nothing has ever worked since day one of water heater installation. At least the A. O. Smith app performed as expected.
Obviously if you need to know what’s going on with your water heater, like if you have a leak, or any other diagnostic notification you’re SOL with this garbage.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2026-08-07, version 14.1.0*

If I could give 0 stars I would. Can’t even create an account to hook my water heater to the app. Same error message every time. It says that there’s an error creating an account, contact customer service or try again.

### 1/5 — App already broken

*2026-07-31, version 14.1.0*

It doesn’t update. Have to quit and restart. At the moment it won’t let me log in. Account is there and I reset my password.

AOSmith: fire your app developer. They make you look bad!

### 1/5 — Trash app doesnt connect

*2026-07-30, version 14.1.0*

No connection

### 1/5 — App, iCOMM Network Connectivity is terrible

*2026-07-26, version 14.1.0*

I’ve tried multiple times to use this app to register my new water heater & activate the iCOMM connection to monitor & manage the device. Typically, I often get an error message that’s coming from their server basically saying we’re experiencing problems, please try again later. Plus the DSN is hidden behind a plate which is not clearly mentioned in the user manual. Not a fan!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — APP does not work

*2026-03-12, version 14.0.0*

This app does not work at all, I would not not not recommend this product!!!!! If the people who made this would at least show us you are working on this APP to fix this problem and FIX IT then I will do another review.

### 5/5 — Works as described

*2026-02-13*

*Set up with AO Signature 300*
The app connected right away. There are some tricky parts to setting up the water heater in the app, but once registered, it has worked great. The app does say it loses connection sometimes. I have figured out that it’s only when Ive been on it and then switch over to some other apps for an extended time and try to come back to it. The easy fix is just closing the app and opening it again.

All the controls are easy enough to use. The red bars above show you how much hot water you have. They start off blue upon installation and increase with time. I can set the temp via app, as well as set up vacation mode.
I can also see the monthly energy usage.

Could it use more features? Yes. But I’m not expecting anything over the moon; I just wanted a solid water heater.

### 5/5 — App update Feb 9, 2026 works!

*2026-02-10*

The app update did the trick! After a call with Tech Support, we were able to get our new hot water heater, series 500 on the app and working great.

We are looking forward to being able to connect remotely, when needed. We will also be setting up a schedule to save some electric usage.

Great job AO Smith technical team!!!

### 5/5 — Press WiFi Button 3 seconds to reset

*2026-02-10*

If you are having issues connecting. You need a 2.4Ghz channel on your router. 5ghz only channel will not work. You need to press the WiFi button on your water heater. That will make the WiFi button blink. When the button is blinking, you are in pairing mode, that is when you need to try to connect to your network. Once you have connected the button will stay on solid and no longer blink. I had to hold the button for 3 seconds and reset a few times, but eventually I was able to select my WiFi Network, and enter my password. Once you get to that point, it may take a minute or so for you water heater info to show up. My heater information eventually populated and I was able to see the temperature my water heater was set to, and select the temperature myself. The setup is definitely buggy, but if you are tech savy, and your router has a 2.4ghz channel, you should be able to get it set.

### 5/5 — Absolutely Useless

*2026-02-01, version 13.0.8*

I specifically purchased this heater because if the ability to monitor the app when traveling. I feel like once again corporate America knowingly screwed the people. They admit their AOSmith app does not work and replaced it with the ICOMM app which also does not work. This is a shameful advertising gimmick to sell additional units. Do not buy one if you need to monitor it.

### 5/5 — Please turn mine back on

*2024-10-20*

Sorry that I wrote a bad review, I’ve fixed that. Can you allow access to the app now? You’re the best.

### 5/5 — App works well with HPTS-80 Voltex Hybrid Heat Pump

*2023-07-11, version 9.0.0*

This App works great with the heater I mention in the title. The App is by no means great, but it let's me enter a schedule or use Time of Use/Day electric plan information to let it optimize the cost.

The rate plan can be entered manually or automatically (depends on your utility) and you can set to optimize water recovery or cost with a 3 point slider scale, letting the heater run more overnight when my rates are low.

I had no issues setting up account, pairing with water heater, etc. Make sure it is in range of your wifi router. You connect directly to it with phone wifi initially to send it your router's connection info (ssid and password) then it will connect to your home network so you can access it with your app.

The App could have more features, like current temp, etc. However, it does job of showing how much hot water you have (3 segments that are red or blue, if all 3 are red it is hot, all 3 are blue it is probably off, etc, not much granularity but who cares). You can adjust temp and running mode too (hybrid resistance /heat pump, heat pump only, resistance only or vacation). Resistance heating is most expensive but fastest and heat pump is cheapest but slowest. With a heat pump water heater you should probably choose heat pump only or hybrid to minimize energy usage except in special situations.

Having these features is important for a heat pump unit, I would probably avoid for anything else.

### 4/5 — App is working well now

*2023-12-17, version 10.3.0*

Got my heat pump water heater in August 2023. Initially the app didn’t work well. Looks like it was revised about October and has worked very well since then. It also has new features that are helpful.

### 3/5 — APP needs work

*2026-09-02, version 14.1.0*

While it’s nice to see a lifetime energy usage, it’s equally important to see the daily & monthly usage

### 3/5 — It works

*2026-08-02, version 14.1.0*

Seems to be stable now, hasn’t “forgotten” my hot water heater for a while now.

Reason I didn’t give it more stars was that there was a feature to see how much electricity it used each day by clicking on the in-app chart. Now you just have to guess based on their terribly scaled chart
