## What is ICU Advantage Rapid Reference?

ICU Advantage Rapid Reference is the critical care reference built for ICU nurses, respiratory therapists, and every clinician caring for critically ill patients. Built to help you understand the complexity of critical care, not just looking things up and forgetting them, while also giving you an extensive collection of tools right at your fingertips when you need them.

From the team behind the ICU Advantage YouTube channel, trusted by more than 980,000 nurses and critical care professionals worldwide.

FOR THE WHOLE CRITICAL CARE TEAM
ICU nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, residents, fellows, attendings, advanced practice providers, and anyone else caring for patients in the ICU. Whether you are a new ICU nurse or have been running codes for twenty years, Rapid Reference meets you where you are, gives you the deep clinical understanding you want and the tools you actually need, and helps you to keep learning and growing wherever you are.

BUILT TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND, NOT JUST LOOK UP
Every topic is written to actually teach, not just summarize. Same philosophy as the ICU Advantage YouTube channel: take something genuinely complex, break it down into pieces that make sense, and leave you knowing the "why," not just the "what." When you need a quick review or refresher, the Rapid Reference for each content area surfaces the important, high-value information for quick access, with links to dive deeper into the parts you need.

DESIGNED FOR CLINICIANS
Clean, readable, and beautifully rendered. This doesn't just feel like reading a textbook on your phone. Elegantly designed to not just look great, but to easily navigate the huge collection of resources. And it stays readable in dark mode or light mode, on iPhone and iPad. Works fully offline, so it's there when the network is not. Bookmarks and favorites for the topics you come back to. No ads, no social feed, no distractions. Just the information you need, organized for quick access and the way you think.

HONEST ABOUT WHAT THIS IS
Rapid Reference is a reference and education tool deigned for health care professionals working in the ICU. It is not medical advice, not a diagnostic device, and not a replacement for your institution's policies, procedures, the laws and regulations of your licensing governing body, or the orders of a qualified prescribing provider. Always defer to your local protocols and clinical judgment.

TRY IT FREE
Every new account gets a 7-day free trial with full access. After that, $15/month or $129/year. Cancel anytime.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.1.3 — 2026-08-24

New ICP waveforms, better image carousels, and a reader that keeps your place.

- New ICP waveform pictures across neuro, trauma, and neuromonitoring. Sixteen tracings, all drawn to the same scale, each with a short caption.
- Reference image carousels now fill the screen. On an iPad, or a phone turned sideways, you see two or three at once instead of one big one.
- Every image in a carousel now has its own heading, so you can tell which is which.
- Cleaned up some empty columns in the content.
- Turn your phone sideways and you keep your place instead of losing your spot.
- Better sizing and spacing of some pairs of information displayed across all devices and orientations.

Keep the feedback coming! A lot of this came straight from what you told us.

### 1.1.2 — 2026-08-21

Sharper search, quicker navigation, and a batch of fixes, plus new ECG figures in the content.

Search now handles apostrophes
- Searching Parkinson's, Cushing's, Crohn's, or Bell's palsy used to return nothing. iPhones type a curly apostrophe while the reference text uses a straight one, and search treated them as different characters. They now count as the same, along with curly quotes and long dashes.
- Typing the apostrophe also narrows the search on purpose: Parkinson's returns entries that actually say "Parkinson's" instead of burying them under names that merely contain the word, like Wolff-Parkinson-White.
- The first time you open the app after updating, search rebuilds its index once. It takes under a minute and runs in the background with a progress bar.

Faster to get around
- Tapping Essentials, Search, or Tools while you are already in that tab now returns you to that tab's main page, no matter how deep you have browsed. Switching between different tabs still keeps your place.

Fixes
- The Targeted Temperature Management protocol would not open, saying it "may still be downloading" no matter how long you waited. It opens normally now (the content-side fix is already live), and the app is hardened so one bad entry can never hide a protocol again.
- Code Team Roles panels now give every role its own icon and color, so Bedside nurse, RT, and Neuro/EEG are distinguishable at a glance.
- Fixed three rare crashes: double-tapping a link on a protocol map right as the screen changed, reporting content just as its screen closed, and opening Lab Values or Abbreviations to a specific entry while the screen was still settling (mostly iPad).
- If your connection dropped at exactly the wrong moment while you created your account, part of the setup could quietly go missing. The app now double-checks and repairs it every time you open it.

New in the content (these arrive through content sync, no update needed)
- Real ECG strips for findings that had no figure: the four-stage hyperkalemia progression labeled with potassium ranges, left and right bundle branch block drawn in two leads at once, QT prolongation, hypomagnesemia, electrical alternans, and artifact side by side with real VF.
- C waves in ICP waveform interpretation corrected to 4 to 8 per minute.

Keep the feedback coming! Several of these fixes came straight from what you reported.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-08-11

THE BIG ONE!! Reference images are making their way into the clinical content!

The first images are HERE and more being added every week! The last update laid the groundwork and now they are live!

 - 195 figures across 150 topics so far: chest films, CT and echo images, arterial and capnography waveforms, ICP tracings, and labeled anatomy. Tap any figure to open it full screen, hide or show labels on anatomy, and switch on annotated overlays on scans.
 - Rhythm Identification now shows a real 6-second ECG strip for EVERY rhythm, drawn on graph paper you can actually measure. Rhythms that make sense side by side are swipeable comparisons, like Wenckebach vs Mobitz II or coarse vs fine VF.
 - Those same strips now appear in 21 more places across the app, from ACS and post-op arrhythmias to the ACLS tachycardia sets, so a rhythm looks identical everywhere it shows up.
 - The Rumack-Matthew nomogram now displays right inside its calculator.
 - More images are being added all the time and they arrive through content updates, no app update needed.

Faster in a code

 - In the arrest protocols, steps that say to work the H's & T's now open the H's & T's list with one tap. Defibrillation and High-Quality CPR have the quick-access tab too.

Find labs by the names you use

 - Old or regional names (SGOT, SGPT, GGTP), brand names for drug levels (Keppra, Dilantin, Prograf), and everyday shorthand (H&H, chem 7, coags, alk phos) now work in search. Panel names like "LFTs" pull up the whole panel.

Polish and fixes

 - Score summaries on scoring tools line up cleanly and show clearer category names.
 - Image captions are centered and easier to read full screen.
 - Pull-to-refresh and Check for updates now always fetch the newest content.
 - Fixed a subscribe screen you could get stuck on if your subscription had lapsed.
 - Content updates too: the trauma primary survey now teaches xABCDE per ATLS 11, medication concentration corrections, VLDL added to Lab Values, and more. These arrive on your next content sync.

Keep the feedback coming! So much of this update came straight from what you all reported. Thank you so much to all of you who have caught things and made suggestions to help to improve Rapid Reference!!!

### 1.1.0 — 2026-07-20

This is the first update since launch and it's a big one! Built around what you all asked for!

THE BIG ONE!! By far the most requested and YES reference images for the clinical content are on the way!
- This update lays the groundwork for reference images in your content. The app is now ready to display them, and the images themselves will begin arriving through in-app content library updates. The first ones right after the update goes live. No app update needed as more images get added.

Units, your way
- A new early stage all-in-one Unit Converter in Calculators: Quickly convert from one unit to another. Tap swap to flip the direction.
- Set your lab values to US (mg/dL) or SI (mmol/L) and your measurements to metric or US once in Settings. Calculators are the first place this goes live, with more of the app to follow.
- Calculators now accept comma decimals too, so an entry like "0,5" works.

Want to see one of the in-app messages again?
- The new Notification History lets you reopen any in-app message you received, even one you dismissed too fast.

Smoother and more reliable
- You stay signed in until you choose to sign out.
- Faster startup, with no more unnecessary "building search index" loading.
- Your library downloads are more reliable across different networks.
- An expanded lab panel Info card now scrolls instead of cutting off on smaller screens.
- The in-app How It Works guide is fully refreshed with the latest changes.
- Many more little bug and content fixes that you guys found and pointed out to me!
