鬼谷子，姓名王诩，战国时代卫国人。其长于持身养性和纵横术、精通兵法、武术、奇门八卦，著有《鬼谷子》兵书十四篇传世。民间称其为王禅老祖，中国春秋战国史上一代显赫人物，是“诸子百家”之一，纵横家的鼻祖，也是位卓有成就的教育家。经常进入云梦山采药修道。因隐居清溪鬼谷，所以称鬼谷子先生。
鬼谷子被喻为纵横家之鼻祖的原因是其下有苏秦与张仪两个叱吒战国时代的杰出弟子〔见《战国策》〕。另有孙膑与庞涓亦为其弟子之说〔见《孙庞演义》〕。
鬼谷子既有政治家的六韬三略，又擅长于外交家的纵横之术，更兼有阴阳家的祖宗衣钵，预言家的江湖神算，所以世人称鬼谷子是一位奇才、全才。其著作有《鬼谷子》又叫做《捭阖策》、《本经阴符七术》言练气养神之法。
道教认为鬼谷先生为“古之真仙”，曾在人间活了百余岁，而后不知去向。《鬼谷子》一书完整地保留在道家的经典《道藏》中。民间亦有传说鬼谷子是命理师的祖师爷，在道教中鬼谷子尊号为玄都仙长。

《鬼谷子》一书，博大精深，充溢着权谋策略的智慧，饱含着言谈辩论的技巧，蕴含着中国古代文化的一个划时代的思想凝聚。 
　　《鬼谷子》是战国时期纵横学派流传下来的唯一部子书。《四库全书总目提要·子部·杂家类》的小序有云：“衰周之季，百氏争鸣，立说著书，各为流品，《汉志》所列备矣。或其学不传，后无所述；或其名不美，人不肯居。故绝续不同，不能一概。后人著录，株守旧文，于是墨家仅《墨子》、《晏子》二书，名家仅《公孙龙子》、《尹文子》、《人物志》三书；纵横家仅《鬼谷子》一书。” 

　　《鬼谷子》全书共分上、中、下三卷，共十七篇。三篇内容明显杂有佛、道思想，极可能是后人伪托增益。上、中两卷形虽划分，实为一体，篇与篇在内容上互相关连。但《鬼谷子》这十四篇中，每十三篇“转丸术”已经兵传。
