■ 작가 조정래
1943년 전남 승주군 선암사에서 태어났다. 광주 서중학교를 거쳐 서울 보성고등학교 당시, 농촌 사회활동에 뜻이 있어 이과반에 적을 두고 있던 조정래는 3학년에 이르러 국문과로 진학 목표를 세우고 동국대학교 국문과에 입학한다. 이 무렵 같은 과 동기인 김초혜를 만난다. 1970년 《현대문학》으로 등단하면서 작품활동을 시작한다. 단편집 『어떤 전설』, 『20년을 비가 내리는 땅』, 『황토』, 『한, 그 그늘의 자리』, 중편 『유형의 땅』, 장편소설 『대장경』, 『불놀이』 『인간 연습』, 『사람의 탈』, 대하소설 『태백산맥』, 『아리랑』, 『한강』, 산문집 『누구나 홀로 선 나무』, 청소년을 위한 위인전 『신채호』, 『안중근』, 『한용운』, 『김구』, 『박태준』, 『세종대왕』, 『이순신』, 자전 에세이 『황홀한 글감옥』 등을 출간하였으며, 현대문학상, 대한민국문학상, 성옥문학상, 동국문학상, 단재문학상, 노신문학상, 광주문화예술상, 동리문학상, 만해대상 등을 수상했다. 조정래 작가의 작품은 영어 · 프랑스어 · 독일어 · 일본어 등으로 세계 곳곳에서 번역 출간되었고(중국어 · 스웨덴어 번역 중), 영화와 만화로 만들어졌으며, TV 드라마와 뮤지컬로도 제작되고 있다.
